called for quick public parliamentary elections so that voters could have a voice in deciding what measures Japan takes for the global economic crisis

Erm, isn't it for the parties to decide upon the measures and then ask the public to vote on them?

Sounds like Ozawa is admitting the DPJ has no plans and is almost begging the public to help him out.

"Send your suggestions to DPJ headquarters and the best one gets 100,000 yen!"

I don't think so. Newspapers will respond by cutting costs or publishing a more selective entries online. There will always be people who want to buy something they can hold in their hands and read.

All I can say is "boooooring!"

Sure it may have entertained people with little taste, but from a critical point of view it wasn't stimulating at all. I saw it as a rather obvious attempt at nationalistic back-slapping (e.g. "lookie what we invented!").

    Triple, I think she's supposed to be a noblewoman - pre-Edo period, I think.

So you think the lies and deception from China are better?

Is this still the shame thing over the IJA's defeat 60+ years on, or reliance on the US nuclear umbrella or what?

Some countries just don't feel the military needs to be supported much. They probably just take it for granted.

Those countries most concern about Tibet should take the exiles/refugees off the PRC border as immigrants. The unrest would lessen.

Not necessarily - it might make things worse if people couldn't go back. They want to remain in Tibet, but they're tired of the oppression there.

The PRC should start using the phrase, "national security" when problems concerning Tibet is brought up. "National security" is quickly understood in the English speaking media, and better clarifies the level of importance to English speaking news outlets.

    No one would buy that.

Maybe that's why America is quite happy to harp on about the plight of the Tibetans but sure are quiet when it comes to the Uighurs who are....wait for it...muslims!

Xinjiang has a very different history - it was under Chinese control a lot more than Tibet was.

It's a very poor choice. Teaching "patriotism" is too narrowly focused and suggests extreme nationalism.

However, I think that it is good to make children aware of good things about their country so that they can better appreciate it. Things like democracy and civil rights are often taken for granted, but they should make people feel "patriotic" to an extent.

US Expat, let's all boycott their Olympics, but continue buying Chinese made goods. Yeah, that's a grand political posture.

It's a sensible one. It makes a point without anyone getting hurt/losing their jobs.

So I suppose test-firing missiles over Japan was a sign of friendship by North Korea? Pyongyang regularly threatens Japan, so it's good that Tokyo has responded by ensuring any such pressure is useless.

By the way, given that the Patriot-3 is a US system it would be possible for Japan to hype its capabilities even if it wanted to - the data is already out there.

"It is a pity Princess Masako has not heard of Homeschooling."

Homeschooling will only isolate the young princess even more. An open school will be much better for her, especially if the law is not changed to allow her to sit on the throne - she would need to be able to survive in the world outside the Palace then.

Even if she became Empress one day it would still be good for her to make friends outside of royal circles.
