The Japanese mentality towards drugs in general is odd, to put it mildly. They lump marijuana into the same category as cocaine/heroine, and then apply one set of rules to 'normal' people while celebrities can do as they please and get a suspended sentence at worst.

If this drip-drip-drip of stories about Hatoyama's finances continues the DPJ are going to start wishing they'd picked Okada to be party president instead of doing whatever Ozawa told them.

Drugs? Human Rights??!! Bwahaahahaha Japanese people's views towards drugs don't make any sense...are they stupid or just pretending>?

It's the views of politicians and the "experts" they get to advise them that are the problem.

Thirty-seven governors said the policy would affect regional economies.

‘‘There were no clear messages on which direction he would like to lead the country,’’ Tanigaki told reporters.

There haven't been many clear messages coming from the LDP recently either.

This would not be a good thing for Japan. Giving voting rights to non-citizens - even in a limited, local sphere - would open up a Pandora's Box tyhat would be near-impossible to close....

And what kind of terrible things do you think would come out of this Pandora's Box?

The western powers have a lot of very shameful history to reflect upon, but criticizing them does not absolve Japan of any blame that it has, and "we were only trying to do what Britain and France had done" is a very poor excuse. Aggressive expansion, slave labour camps, massacres…

Sooner the DPJ get an outright Upper House majority and that old buffoon Kamei's support is no longer necessary the better. Doubtless he'd want to spend the extra ¥10 trillion on handouts for unprofitable small companies that are just going to go bankrupt anyway.

Japan was not a hero but an awkward late comer who tried to follow the West and blundered.

That's the point I was making. If Japan was just trying to follow the example of the western colonial powers, Japanese nationalists don't have very good grounds for saying they helped to…
