I wouldn't call the endorsement of a bunch of half-senile yokels good news. However, it's no bad thing if this serves to remind people that if they want someone to blame for this prize idiot becoming Prime Minister, they need look no further than their local LDP chapters and representatives.

The current situation highlights a more fundamental problem. The Japanese political system allows for a bicameral legislature in which one house is only really more powerful than the other while its biggest party has a two thirds majority. This isn't really a problem when the same party has majorities in both houses, of course, but that's not the situation at the moment and there's no way the LDP are going to control two thirds of the lower house even if they do manage a win in the next election. So there's more chaos on the way unless the DPJ win outright. Having said all that, a directly elected Prime Minister could be someone with the power to break ties, so it's not a bad idea.

We need someone who has a coherent idea how to run a country properly and solve its problems. If I need to laugh at something I'll rent a comedy DVD. As matters stand I do not think any of the legislators who might be contenders for the PM's job have any commitment to making the changes that Japan needs as they seem to be completely blind to the country's most fundamental problems.

The sad thing is that as blundering, incompetent and drunk as Nakagawa may be, he's probably doing no worse a job than all those other finance ministers. He should still be fired though.

Really? Why? That's what the parties that aren't in power do all the time. It's why they're called the opposition. Anyway, the Aso adminstration is doing a good enough job destablising itself without any help from the DPJ, and the sooner they're gone the better.
But anyway, Aso is never going to apologise for his family's actions in WW2. Apart from any other consideration, there's no way the LDP would want to antagonise all those war veterans' associations and right-wingers whose support they feel they need.

I find it nauseating that Japanese youth are duped into thinking these useless, effeminate posers are fashionable and attractive.

In terms of popular entertainment the rest of the world has more taste. For sheer awfulness the Japanese entertainment industry takes the worst other countries have to offer and beats it hands down.

On the NHK news last night it was reported that the opposition proposed dissolving the lower house for a general election. They were voted down, of course, but one LDP lawmaker, Yoshimi Watanabe, voted on their side. I'm wondering if we'll hear more about this.

I don't understand the popularity of these "tokusatsu" shows like Kamen Rider and Ultraman. While SF TV shows in the US and UK have been moving forward in leaps and bounds, these things still feature people in tacky superhero outfits and daft monster costumes jumping about on top of Tokyo office buildings pretending to hit each other and growling or shouting portentously. The genre seems to be stuck in the 1960s, except that even old 60s black and white episodes of Doctor Who look good by comparison.

They'd be better off introducing moral education classes for parents, teachers, businessmen, bureaucrats and LDP members.

Right, there was Nazi Germany and fascist Italy as well. Real quality allies to have in a war, don't you think?

As for the diplomacy books, everyone knows it's just for show because Aso won't be able to read any of the kanji in them.

Quite clearly he IS very dumb, otherwise he wouldn't have jumped at the chance to come PM when it was obvious (I think) that Fukuda was jumping ship to avoid being the man who led the LDP to election wipe-out. I think he was smart enough to realise that nothing anyone in the LDP can do will win them enough support to maintain controlling majorities in the Diet. Aso clearly is not, and people are starting to realise it - latest opinion polls show he has something like 31% support, down from 48% just last month.

I can see why Aso picked this one to be Finance Minister. Right wing, loudmouthed, deluded and thick. Obviously a shameless brown-noser as well. What's not to like?

No he doesn't, if he isn't working late or attending a function in an official capacity. I see journalists here are just as prone to opening their mouths without turning their brains on first as politicians.
