Is it really a good idea to do this? Are the radiation levels still a bit high in Fukushima-city? If so, having teenagers competing full-tilt outside may be a case of sacrificing their health for the sake of PR. Have the local Fukushima teens been playing club and sports activities outdoors?

I've seen Iwakuni (in Yamaguchi) since the 70s slowly becoming a shutter town. Especially their central business district. They could really use the boost that 1,500 Marines would bring to their economy.

Why not say it's in Chiba (Minami-Boso to be exact)? Why is everything "east, west, north, south of Tokyo"? Don't they want to give props to Chiba?

Why don't they hold their Nuclear Security Summit in Fukushima?

I don't think one should be too hard on this author. She's justing posting a question of whether you'd go back home or go to a shelter/new place.

Meanwhile citing some examples of the hardships of being in a shelter or moving on to a new place shouldn't invite comments such as, "another boring news article," or "why don't you go up there and help?".

The problem is that they have no way nor resources to monitor how much radiation is actually in the debris.

They're building new homes now that are tainted with cesium due to them getting building materials from quarries in Fukushima and perhaps in surrounding prefectures. They aren't being detected until the buildings have already been built.

People are not going to want to hear an "oops" from the government afterwards concerning this disposal problem either.

This is a result of the people not trusting what the government is saying due to all the previous "It's safe" reassurances that proved to be false. We just don't know what to believe anymore. This is why the handling of this disaster's aftermath has been such a failure - trust in government has eroded.

The Japanese haven't had the spirit to protest since the end of the 60s. The government as a result has ignored the wants of the people in many ways.

I hope the 3/11 nuclear disaster and the poor handling of it afterwards becomes a catalyst for more activism.

This is why ACCURATE and UP TO DATE information is important to disperse to the public. Many important decisions and families depended on info being given to them by the government so they could make the best decisions for themselves.

That's why, on the other thread about the govt. not wanting to create a panic thus withholding information, I can't agree with what they did.

The government should have given out this information as it came out daily and let the people decide for themselves how much risk they and their families wanted to take. Had this turned out worse, millions of people being irradiated and killed.

It sounds as if this government is willing to sacrifice the lives of its people. The trust in this government I'm sure has eroded considerably and justifiably so.

Personally, I was specifically searching for information like this as I was on the verge of moving to the Kanto area. This would've made my decision to or not to much easier to make. But instead I had to make a lot of uninformed guesses and speculate what the risks were for my kids due to the government not releasing this vital information.

The LDP has been THE obstacle for for getting legislations passed that would have helped benefit the people of this country.

A DPJ member could be trying to hail a cab and the LDP would demand that the Lower House be dismantled and call for snap elections.

I think they need to re-title this photo "Happy If It Weren't So Flat Surfer". I agree with ebisen that Chiba's Sotobo/Minami-Boso is wonderful. It's a hidden gem of natural beauty under the nose of millions of Kantoites that think of Chiba as "dasai".

400 million yen of your own money is quite a big sum of money not to report or "not know about".

This is quite unfortunate since I like many of his ideas in the "Manifesto" that we came so close to actualizing when the DPJ first came to power.
