I'm sure the dad is just overwhelmed with guilt and wouldn't be surprised in the least if he's seriously considering suicide. How horrible he must feel. Poor child - so sorry for such a short life.

Yes, but this doesn't explain why the Japanese, when traveling overseas, during GW are not wearing masks. Many have said they felt awkward sticking out since no one else is wearing them abroad. They wear them in Japan because everyone else here is - not just because of their stronger fear of "foreign diseases". (Note: I think masks are a good idea though.)
Posted in: I think it's part of the Japanese psyche to want to protect yourself at all cost from outside diseases. That feeling is stronger than the feeling of social embarrassment at wearing a mask.

Had the amount of money and effort that had been spent on Iraq been directed on Afghanistan instead, the resurgence of the Taliban probably wouldn't be a concern. Eight years of a half-assed fought war has only entrenched and made the Taliban stronger and spread into Pakistan.

Piracy was subdued two hundred years ago on the barbary coast with deadly force. Why this can't be done again this time, I don't know. International laws are being broken by the pirates, thus international laws meant to protect them should become null and void.

It's been said by posters here that the US wouldn't want Japan to become a nuclear power. Is that really the case? I don't really think the US would be that against it. There is a high level of trust between these two nations.

I tried to go and buy an impounded bike and was surprised to hear that they were all going to be demolished. I think they should just sell all the bikes as is for really cheap with people signing a non-liability clause. Otherwise, it's a real waste of money and thousands of functioning bikes.

A bit obvious, but losing my own job. Also, the crime rate spiraling. I've always liked the fact that Japan has been a very safe place to live. Also, just the site of the homeless suffering outside breaks my heart - hate to see more of this.

Just a question. I was under the impression that a "nursing home" is a place for the elderly, while a "nursery school" is a place for children. Am I incorrect?

The reason, I'm sure, that this idiot didn't leave the poor little girl in an empty koban or a convenience store is that most have surveillance cameras.
BUT there are a million other places better than a bicycle basket out in the cold winter rain to leave a precious little newborn.

I find Patrick Harlan's demeanor on TV commendable. His Japanese is quite impressive and he comes across well as a comedian without going over the top and looking idiotic. The shows he's been on, from the morning news show to eigo de shaberanaito, have been pretty good, in my opinion.
I think the differing and high expectations of the expat community here in Japan will always find fault with whomever becomes a celebrity. It's always been this way as long as I've been in Japan and I've still yet to see the "perfect talento" that everyone is happy with.
