The "mole" story is a joke. Right, so this is why Jobs kept the iPad's development…

The recent episodes seems to have the Japanese hosts speaking a lot more Japanese in the show than before and have given up somewhat in trying to speak English.
The message of the show is to "try and speak English as best as you can; don't be too self-conscious about it, just try, etc." but the two guy hosts (Yashima & Aoi) aren't making much of an effort to do it themselves.
I think Moe-chan gives it a much better attempt and is a plus for the show. The loss of Matsumoto and Shaku hurt the show.
It's too bad the show's being canceled, since it's usually a more interesting watch than many of the other shows I see on TV. But with the current feel of the show, its time probably has come.

On a more serious note, MacArthur. On an even more serious note, Obama (since MacArthur is dead). If you have to choose one of the local incompetents, then Masuzoe (or Lion Onishi).

I'd much rather work a little less and have my salary reduced than lose my job. I think work-share is more humane than lay-offs. At least you'll still have some income. If it's not sufficient, you'll have time to look for another job without first becoming destitute with no income.

I suggest the Maglev. Oh, I also suggest closing Narita and greatly expanding Haneda. Thank you.

Why is it that parents get 7 YEARS for murdering their child and get 7 YEARS for pimping their 15 year old girl?
I'm sorry, but a little baby being brutally beaten to death because "it was crying" is a much more heinous crime.

I try to buy a Big Issue whenever I see these men/women selling them. But I am a bit disappointed that the one or two articles in each issue that were written in English has been discontinued.

The statute of limitation is 15 years here in Japan. Memories/evidence fade or disappear over the years hence the greater chance of putting innocent people in jail. But like smartacus wrote, with today's advanced forensic and DNA checking techniques, they need to revise or abolish it.

They need to expand these year long stays in rural areas from 50 people to 50,000 people.
Use the 12,000 yen that Aso is giving to 127,000,000 people here in Japan and redirect that to this program if Japan is going to be serious about keeping their rural areas alive. (The nicest parts & people of Japan, if you ask me.)

I live in a big city but have a car. The only reason I do is because of my toddler. It's a real pain going anywhere farther than 200 yards with the little one. Especially when shopping and carrying large or numerous items. (Before the kid, I actually junked my van since it was unnecessary with such good public transpo.)
After the kid arrived, I did what the previous poster wrote about calling a cab, but that really added up to be quite a bit and actually quite inconvenient at times since the cab's arrival times were too erratic. Renting a car really added up, too. But like I said, without a kid, a car isn't necessary inside the big cities like Osaka, Tokyo etc.

Maybe they should close off Gion like they did Tsukiji.

Good for you, Nishimatsu. It's this attitude that I would like to see from other CEOs, especially US ones. If the people in your company are being laid-off and your company is hurting financially, it is best to show some modesty and a hell of a lot less exuberance.

ChrisErlindson, This shot was taken from Fujisawa in Kanagawa Prefecture at a beach called Kugenuma. If you were to turn around you'd see Enoshima Island and just around the point is Kamakura where the Big Buddha is. This is about 45 minutes south of Yokohama.

This has always been one of my favorite shots of Japan. Mt. Fuji is beautiful. Too bad Shonan's waves aren't as majestic as the mountain backdrop.

English speaking ability shouldn't be a requirement for a Nobel Prize in theoretical physics. He speaks the language of numbers formulas.
For those who think that English is required to "adequately" keep up in his chosen field, you need to keep in mind there is a lot of literature written in German, French, and many other languages, and the most important information is often translated from their initial source language into others, including Japanese.
If a recipient of the prize wants to speak expressively/smoothly in front to a world audience and say exactly what's on his mind in his/her own language with the aid of an interpreter, rather than awkwardly speak and read a script in a language he's not comfortable with, he shouldn't be ashamed of it.
Posted in: Physics requires the ability to think creatively using mathematical formulas, so English isn't essential to pursue theoretical physics in Japan.

In Japan, moral education in the past was taught in BOTH the home (read community) and at school. With the loss of extended families and close tight-nit communities, where everyone knew one another and actually felt the embarrassment of of "one of their own" exhibiting criminal behavior, has been the biggest cause of the decline of moral fiber in both children and adults.
The actual feeling of "shame" has disappeared from the communities I see in contemporary Japan, compared to about 40 years ago when I lived first lived here as a child.
I'm sorry, but just teaching morals in the schools without any corresponding effort or changes by families and communities will prove ineffective.
