Didn't they cut off a huge amount of revenue by making the expressways free/2,000 rather than just lowering the prices from ridiculous?

If the government mandates that all new homes/buildings be built with solar panels then in the next 30 years they can easily get buy without having to create so much energy.

Tell the customer from the start that after every 10,000 yen worth of driving, he's going to stop and have him pay before continuing on. Come on, the dude is homeless. He can't look like he's got 180,000 yen on him.

i think many of you who are complaining that it was "weak" and accusing the authorities of crying wolf are fortunate that the typhoon switched directions and headed straight east. My area had over 100 centimeters (1,000 millimeters!) in the course of two days. The river near my house was on the verge of flooding over its banks which would've been catastrophic for our city. Another meter and a half rise and we would've been forced to evacuate.
I'm not sure what it is that people who think the authorities were over-reacting want them to do next time. Wait until people actually get killed before putting out their warnings? If this storm were to stay stationary and slowly continue moving in a northern trajectory over land it would've caused horrendous damage.
Many doubting Thomasas were wiped out by Hurricane Katrina because they didn't take the warnings seriously enough. I don't want the same mistakes being made here.

You're absolutely right! I mistakenly mixed up two different island disputes with two different countries. Thanks for pointing that out.
The Japanese-Korean dispute is over the Takeshima/Dokdo Islands, while the Japanese-Chinese dispute is over the Senkaku-Diaoyu Islands.
In that case, instead of going 1/3 like I originally wrote, go halfs on each island chain and share the future exploration/development costs and split the wealth accordingly.

One thing I don't like about participating in tea ceremonies is having to sit seiza for long periods of time. It's excruciating! The people in the photo are lucky to be able to sit on chairs. The lady on the far right looks like she's either listening to Lady Gaga or listening to a interpretation of the tea ceremony steps.

> “A move targeting a private firm like Korean Air is inappropriate and may contravene global diplomatic protocols and WTO (World Trade Organization) rules,” Kim’s spokesman quoted him as saying in a cabinet meeting. >
Korea shouldn't have had a private firm pull this kind of stunt. Otherwise there wouldn't be a boycott against a private firm.
Korea, Japan, and China should agree on not provoking each other with ANY of these kind of stunts and/or having nationals from respective countries taking boats out there and making claims to the islands.
A three-way agreement sharing the islands where each country claims 1/3 of the islands and 1/3 of any future profits made from the natural resources found there should be sought after. That seems to be the only viable solution available for these three unbudging nations.

I agree. I do see it often and find it distasteful. Especially when coaches do it.
Sorry, I may be old fashioned, but yes I do find crying after losing to be poor sportsmanship. I've been playing organized sports since I was a little kid and coaches would get quite angry when a teammate of mine would cry for not winning. To me that IS poor sportsmanship.
I don't mean to belabor the point, but when Waubach quickly congratulated the Japanese team it made me very proud of her for retaining her composure and showing good sportsmanship after their heartbreaking loss. Which, by the way, was one of the best soccer games I've ever seen.

Now why did you have to post that below-the-belt comment? Lame! >
I wrote that because I have rarely, if ever, seen a Japanese team, male or female, not have a few or many members of the team break down in dramatic sobs and let run tears of disappointment and despair after a loss. I've been watching Japanese sports teams for close to 20 years.
I used to help coach JHS baseball and badminton teams and watched them cry like babies after losing big games/tournaments. The coaches somewhat expected them to "cry their hearts out" to display that they've given it all they could to win but couldn't. I used to tell them that it was considered bad sportsmanship and childish to do this but was told that it is different here in Japan.
Next month, watch EVERY team that gets knocked out of the Koshien high school baseball tournament and you will see an embarrassing amount of crying.
The Japanese women won a great game, but had they lost it would've been a first for me to not see a Japanese team cry "to show they gave it all their hearts".
The US lost with great composure and, of course, understand a few had tears of disappointment, but I still stand by my earlier comment that I don't believe the Japanese women would have been nearly as composed had they lost.

Excellent game! The US team held their composure and showed good sportsmanship after the game. No exaggerated display of crying, which I'm sure the Japanese women would have done. Both teams were a pleasure to watch.

This has been a LAW for over a year. This is the first ticket. Why make a law if "law enforcement" does not enforce it? How can anyone respect this?

Sports Day festivals really should be held in October or November. The Tokyo Olympics were held in October for this very reason. Every school I mentioned this to, they always said that, that part of the year is too busy with tests and other things. I think this excuse is irresponsible and doesn't hold water.

Yeah, the name of the town, "Toon" was created when a few of the towns in that area merged a few years ago. It's actually pronounced "toe" "own". They should've spelled it "Tou-on" rather than "Toon-town".

"a symbol of Japan's recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami..."
How about first seeing if Japan, more specifically the Sanriku coast, can actually recover from the disaster. The radiation drama has even yet to play out and Ishihara wants to jump the gun and use the TOKYO olympics as a sign of Tohoku's recovery. I don't know which crystal ball he's looking in but many people aren't seeing the same things as he is.

Overly contaminated products making it to France will further erode the international community's ability to trust what Japan says about their products. The J-government looks like they can't properly monitor their own exports. Quite damaging indeed.
Posted in: When people are fearful, they're not going to buy your products, no matter how many times you tell them they're safe. I think this is going to be an ongoing struggle for some Japanese products, agricultural products in particular.
