What's the diff between Cool Biz and Super Cool Biz? There's nothing really super cool about guys wearing jackets during the summer.

You would think the government would have more important things to think about. Making it a law to pretend to respect something won't ever result in people actually respecting it.

It would have been helpful had the government and NPOs been more specific about what was/is needed as time went by.

I would like to see the media focusing their attention on the towns/villages nearby the reactors that aren't getting any assistance. Most relief workers are told to stay away and the residents are told to keep themselves indoors. Thus hardly any fuel, food, and water is getting to them and many don't have the means to evacuate. Almost all contact between them and the rest of Japan has been cut-off.

It's bad enough abandoning a baby, but it's even worse when they leave it somewhere dangerous where it can die of exposure.

This idea of a job guarantor is just completely beyond me. What does the guarantor guarantee? That the person will turn up for work? That they'll work hard? That they won't leave their job? (surely they have the legal right to do that, seeing as feudal times have theoretically finished?) That they'll collect their pay? That they won't ask for a pay rise? The mind boggles. >
The guarantor the person was referring to are ones for housing not for jobs. In Japan you need a guarantor in order to rent an apartment/house. You don't need one for a job.
I agree with jason6 that this is a recipe for crime. After WWII, the Japanese government announced the philosophy of "Equality for 100,000,000 people" (in an economic sense). This, and of course a rocketing economy, helped create one of the most stable societies in the world.
I'm a strong believer that the less disparity you have in society the more stable it will become and vice versa. I'd like to see Japan revert back to a more socialist style government, society, and policies.

There's a lot of speculation going on here. This reminds me of a bunch of middle aged obasans gossiping and spreading rumors that the driver: was drunk, using his cellphone, changing his CD, watching TV, etc. when in reality know one here knows anything at all about the actual cause of the accident.

I went last night, which was the first night and a weeknight, and it wasn't very crowded. You have to enter the walk-route from about about a kilometer away, but it wasn't crowded so it took us about 10 minutes to "get to the lights". They do have some exits along the way just in case you need to "escape". It was quite pretty.
They have snack stands in the lights area but it being Kobe, I suggest going into one of the hundreds of little delicious eateries nearby.
I went six years ago and experienced the same thing as kujiranikusuki (hell), so if you can get there close to the beginning at 6 on a weekday, it might not be so bad.

The atmosphere in Japan has done a complete 180 since I was here in the 70s and 80s. There used to be a buzz in the air with so much more "life" in people's expectations for themselves and the country.
For me, the change in the young adults have been the most profound. Teenagers and young adults used to seem to have a much less jaded attitude and outlook on their lives and a greater sense of wonderment and excitement when I used to encounter them. These days, they seem so much more "subdued" and resigned. It could be that I'm just not meeting as many glass is half full kids like I used.
But there definitely is a lot less "electricity in the air" in this country than there used to be.

“When you fight, the man should apologize.”
I wouldn't take this too seriously. She said it tongue in cheek. She looked really anorexic on TV the other day. Her cheeks were droopy and she looked really ragged and bony compared to just a year earlier. I think her friends and family need to keep an eye on her.

I think email will still be the dominant communication technology at many workplaces. In the article, teenagers are using tools other than email, but they have yet to enter the workforce.
This revolution in communication technology is quite exciting.

I'm shocked to hear that you need exact change (in coins) to ride the busses in NY. They really don't take any bills? No timetable in SF shows how disorganized their system is.
I really do enjoy not having to be on my guard when out and about in Japan. This is a society that works in many ways.
