The victim told police the man is about 170 cm tall and aged in his 20s.

Nice description. Time to bring in the police sketch artist.

‘‘If the seat belt is the three-part type that also holds your shoulder and it is used properly, there is no need to worry’’ about possible pressure on the stomach during a crash, Murao said.

"Oh, no. I can't wear a seat belt. It will hurt my unborn child." So I guess some woman would rather be launched through the windshield and slam into (a) a pole, (b) a tree, (c) the pavement and being run over by other vehicles or (d) all of the above. Unbelievable!

Oh yeah! Mr. Policeman...why don't you at the same time "request" drivers to obey the law about restraining their children properly instead of letting them stick their heads out the window? Again...unbelievable!!

Whether this happened in Japan or any other country is completely irrelevant. We're dealing with primal forces here folks. Society is not to be blamed. Even if there were "hatches" at every corner store, this would still happen. It's rare but it falls within normal human behavior. Like it or not.

    Serindipity...

However, I don't really think it's apathy. I think it's more to do with feeling insignificant and having no voice in society.

And having to cope with this feeling for generations upon generations, it's no wonder that it has manifested itself into a feeling of apathy. As with the many daily routines that have become an art form in Japan, "The Art of Denial" is one of the finest.

Considering the ages the victims, this "grandson" probably scored quite a stash of cash. If he had any brains at all, he would have left the country Saturday night. Of course that is a VERY BIG "IF."

For the same reason why they are so apathetic towards everything else...

"The giant hornets nest in the ground, under a stump, etc"

This is not necessarily true. The giant hornets that I had the displeasure of meeting were building a "paper" nest under a step on the fire escape of my apartment building. Thus the attack. I was ascending the staircase but did not notice the hornets. Until it was too late.

I can tell you from experience, getting stung by the Japanese Giant Hornet is horrificaly painful. I got attacked last year and was stung 4 times. When people say that it is equivelant to being stuck by a hot nail, their not kidding. That's exactly what it felt like times 4.

As for this monk, obviously he never read "The Tao of Pooh."

We see it time and time again...Ignorance Spawns Tragedy. And when it comes to parental skills in Japan, a country that should know better, ingorance seems to be the norm.

    Sad indeed.
