So will these contract workers now be severely punished for their misdemeanours?

My guess is that Bush and the Israelis will go at the end of July with a very hard strike - early enough for some dust to start to settle before the American elections and for the gasoline price to be well on the way down again by the start of November. But not so soon that the full political and economic fallout from the attack will be becoming apparent.

Let me get this straight. They cancelled a train because someone had sprayed some graffiti on one car?? You are joking!

JR management ought to take a trip to Germany and take a look at the trains there. In Frankfurt they get kept back in the depot if someone hasn't actually got around to spraying graffiti on them yet.

No surprise. A greedy American bank that looks after neither customers nor employees properly. Following a sneaky change in their UK account charging rules I count myself lucky that I got clear of their clutches after they had only pocketed $100 dollars of my cash, it could have been much more if I hadn't been vigilant.

As a diabetic I can't see that this offers anything that a bit of intelligent and pro-active personal management doesn't. If you have this kind of health condition you have to take your own responsibility for monitoring it. Technology gimmicks don't help, they simply provide an illusion of control. Well, that's my opinion.

"As a result, if the prosecutors fail to prove guilt, they do not declare the suspect innocent, but rather "not guilty".

I am aware of the distinction you make but my understanding is that in this case no charge has ever been made and so the guy concerned cannot be found "not guilty" because there never was any formal attempt to establish his guilt in the first place.

Let me get something straight? Was the guy charged with any offence? Did the case go to court? Was he convicted of an offence?

If not what the heck business is it of anyone elses? Sounds like the guy has already had enough trouble in his life from this allegation without anyone trying to ruin his wedding and marraige over one alleged stupid act. "Innocent until proved guilty" is a fundamental principle of law I believe, even the perverted variety that sometimes passes for justice in Japan.

Rudd is a very 'class act', a real credit to the Aussies. A pity there aren't a heck of a lot more politicians with his style and honesty around the world

Of course they could also save a heck of a lot of that taxpayers money they are supposed to be spending wisely by simply not showering mountains of other people's hard earned cash on dodgy IT consultants and silly IT projects. If they really think there is a problem it would be much easier and more efficient to scrap all cigarette vending machines and limiting tobacco sales to supervised counters at kiosks and convenience stores, many other countries have. Of course a few might still be tempted to supply underage smokers but that could be discouraged by thumping fines.

The current British government is about to suffer its biggest ever election defeat largely thanks to Blair's sycophantic and unquestioning support for Bush in Iraq.

Many in Britain would happily see Blair arraigned at the Hague on war crimes charges for the role he played in Iraq and the way he deceived the Westminster parliament and the people.

Futures trading. A lot of 'big money' that used to make profits in the real estate markets is now gambling on putting up the price of your food and fuel by cornering the supply.

That is how global capitalism works,

Well, I'll tell you what then. You go on paying a large shedful of extra cash to JAL and I'll find a cheaper ticket and then we will both be happy.

Slash their fares? Why? Because JAL offer a grossly overpriced service that is no better than anybody elses. Believe me there is absolutely nothing wrong with the quality of Lufthansa safety, efficiency and service and it costs 30% less. American airlines I can't speak for, I don't use them much.

In Japan you don't pay extra for safety. You pay extra to cover the wages of all those spare people you see standing around watching and trying to look busy counting photocopies and the like. This doesn't only apply to JAL, banks are pretty classic at it too.

Ever heard of value for money???

Did you think it would work?

So now with "self check-in" JAL have caught up with where Lufthansa and British Airways (to name but two) were two years ago. If they would just slash their fares to the same level as their competitors I might even fly with them.

Sounds to me like the LDP tuning up to give yet another large shedful of taxpayers cash to some of their buddies in agribusiness.

If they had wanted to promote home food production maybe they shouldn't have encouraged so many of their other buddies in real estate and construction to fill in and build over tanbo over the last fifty years

Fukuda has his faults and problems but he shows a great deal more diplomatic skill than either Koizumi or Abe.

I long ago gave up any expectation of a rational response on any issue from Ishihara but he might at least bear in mind the number of Tokyo jobs dependent on Chinese customers. Perhaps next time around he'll go the same way as London's ex-mayor Livingstone.

It is certainly true that many Japanese children are unaware of the Nazis and haven't heard of Hitler. In a recent juku class of fourth grade elementary school children my Japanese wife teaches only two out of nine had heard of either.

Many kids seem only dimly aware of post-Meiji Japanese history too. No suprise there I suppose given the best efforts of the 'educational establishment' here but it is a pleasure to fill in the gaps for them.
