If the lesson that we learned from WW2 was that we needed bases around the world to prevent attacks against us, it seems to me that we learned the wrong lesson.

To a certain degree I can understand the feeling. This is NOT a dig. When was the last time that the US fought an invader on home-soil? The US has in recent history always fought wars overseas, with no danger to their homes/family and industry(besides economics).
