From the article: “We are urging both sides to refrain from rhetoric or actions that could be provocative, that could contribute to tensions,” spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters. “Obviously, we would like to see both sides cool it and get back to a place where they can have a productive relationship.” “We want to see these two strong allies of the United States get along with each other and work together in support of regional peace and security,” she said.

Naturally it sounds better to make it come across as a lecture.

My guess is that the people who are calling this threat a hoax are the same people who are claiming that the US creates most of the terrorists in the world. I guess we're just creating terrorists who don't actually try to plan out attacks.

Wolfpack: More of the same that will have the same result - continued deficits and exploding debt,

So it looks like when Obama does agree to tax cuts Republicans focus on the debt, and when he proposes raising taxes to pay for the debt then he's a job killer. I'm guessing that will be the double position from Republicans.

though the Palestinians could gain admission to certain U.N. bodies, including the International Criminal Court, that they could potentially use as a launching pad for action against Israel.

And just how would that work? Some kind of verdict that supports Hamas, a terrorist organization? Yeah, I'm sure the ICC would love to be put in that position.

Both sides need to return to the negotiating table. The little procedural games have to stop. In the end it just pushes the two sides farther apart.

pawatan: And this needs to happen 14 months in advance... why? Democracy can't function properly if candidates don't spend their entire lives campaigning?

They do this so you can really know who you are voting for, and they also do it to prevent the election from becoming a quick popularity contest. Wasn't Bachamnn in the lead a month ago or so? It takes time for us to learn she's insane. You don't want elections happening too soon.

I'm against guns, but to me the problem is that people don't know how to have a civilized conversation about them.

Most of what I've read says drilling in the US just isn't cost effective at this point. And the China issue will just start a trade war where both sides lose so that angle has been rejected as well.

It's just weird to me. The Republicans must know about the negative image the Tea Party has in the US right now except for actual Tea Party members. But for some reason they are moving to align themselves with them. Have they just given up on anyone else and decided to fall in line with the only group who will vote for them?

Sometimes you read a post and shake your head that someone could be so clueless. And other times you read a post and realize some people are being intentionally dishonest just for the sake of having an argument.

smithinjapan: And fortunately for you, non-Americans cannot vote -- otherwise there would be no GOP to begin with, since non-Americans seem to know more about and what's better for the USA than Americans themselves.

It's getting to be that time again when I have to politely ask the foreigners to stop saying such things because it only pushes people more towards the Republicans. But I suppose you saw the satisfaction it brought Sushi and you just can't pass up on gettin' some yourself. Do it at your own risk. You're making things worse for Democrats.

TheQuesion: It will always be an issue. Whether people here want to admit it or not every aspect of a person plays a role in their decision making from their childhood, to their education, to their religion. The religion of a candidate adds some insight but it should only serve as one part of the many factors to consider when voting.

That's a reasonable statement and I happen to agree with it. Someone's life experiences is going to make him what he is, and his exposure to religion is part of that process. But let's be real. His position as governor was what allowed him to advertise and pull off a massive televised prayer rally which puts him in the position of spiritual leader. And then he asked people to vote for him. That crosses the line between church and state. The fact that he's able to pull it off because he's in Texas and people are willing to go along with it doesn't make it any less of an abuse of power.

Rick Perry dived right in. The Texas governor, now a Republican presidential candidate, held a prayer rally for tens of thousands, read from the Bible, invoked Christ and broadcast the whole event on the Web.

And naturally is wasn't a case of him using his political position to sell one kind of religion to the masses. That would be just silly.

Oracle: And yeah, we all know the flotilla was a trap on the part of a minority of the members. But that does not mean Israel had to run headlong into the trap. Heck, they could have let this one flotilla through their illegal blockade unhindered even, and it would have been better.

But that's blaming Israel not responding "properly" to an utterly stupid situation the Turks put them in. Other flotillas have been intercepted without any incidents of violence, and that's a direct result of the crew and passengers not attacking the boarding Israelis. Turkey knew militants were on the ship and they knew violence would break out when it had not happened with previous attempts. The small minority that you described changes the situation entirely, and Turkey was utterly irresponsible for endorsing this counterproductive behavior and it makes one wonder if that was the ultimate goal. In the end things would be fine if they hadn't hatched this crackpot plan in the first place.

Flotillas cannot be allowed because they will eventually be used to smuggle in arms. It's guaranteed. Allowing one will mean militants will try to use them. Denying that just isn't a reasonable opinion. And we all know Hamas uses aid as a way to control their own population by keeping them and selling them to make cash from people who are loyal to them while screwing everyone else.

Like I said, this appears to be a planned event to create a conflict on behalf of Turkey. Then the UN report comes out and brings to light responsibility on behalf of the Turks and despite that information they break off relations. It's almost as if it was set in stone that this would be the result before the boat even left the port. That's what concerns me.

It just seems odd. The UN report pretty much spread the blame around on everyone, so it's not like there was any new information that would make Turkey suddenly cut ties over an incident that took place over a year ago.
