Obama should own the Republicans? I don't think that's going to happen. If Boehner, Cantor, and even McCain can't get the Republicans to agree I'm not sure how Obama stepping in and "owning the problem" is going to solve anything. Granted, it would draw attention away from Republicans and their inability to even produce a vote, but -- oh, wait. Not I get it.

This is actually about turning the debt ceiling into a political football. Republicans decided that they found a neat way to try to get legislation passed that they don't have the votes for otherwise. Well, I'm getting ahead of myself there. They still haven't decided what they want yet. We're still waiting.

Once something like this goes political it never goes back again. I'm assuming the debt ceiling will be a way for a minority in Congress to hold the rest of the US hostage while they extort demands to get the votes needed to prevent default. Not only are Republicans doing this now, but they want to include language to require another vote in the near future so they can try to extort more. They're so excited about the prospect of this new political tool that they're fighting amongst themselves trying to decide the best way to abuse it.

Heythia: @superlib Funny how you're complaing that China is stealing secrets when the US did the same thing to Nazis in WW2. You know the whole abducting Germany scientists and making them work for the US and stealing all the secret Nazi stuff. But they probably don't teach you that in public schools.

Uh, I'm not complaining. China is. My point was that countries often try to steal secrets. If the Chinese don't like the spy planes then perhaps they would agree to stop trying to gather information about the US. But that probably won't happen. Your comment about the Nazis is just your own personal baggage that you're attaching to this thread. Useless.

So the world waits while Republicans try to decide which ideology they require for passage of a routine bill.... No more Obamacare? A balanced budget amendment? Another round of this right before an election to try to squeeze out some political gain? Who knows? They have a gun to the world's head and they can't decide the best way to abuse it....so we wait.

chewitup: Meanwhile, the sun never sets on the U.S. Empire, and however benign everyone likes to pretend it is, the U.S. is behind far far more war in the last 100 years than China. The U.S. is pretty friggen far from benign. I would like both parties to be reined in.

Check your baggage at the door. Must be heavy.

sailwind: Asking to borrow more to spend on the national credit card is insane. No offense, but damn it those that follow after me do not deserve to be saddled with this debt.

Yes, kids, I helped put us into the depression that wiped out your college funds because I just couldn't handle lowering the debt in a responsible way over time. I threw a tantrum and decided to just default on everything because I wanted to send a message. And that message is stupidity. You're welcome.

Looks like McCain is now speaking out against the Tea Party crazies:

Republican leaders are using WSJ editorials talking about Lord of the Rings in order to attack their other Republicans....while the whole world watches....heh. I really don't see how this group of dysfunctional misfits will be able to agree with each other. Meanwhile, their loyal supporters, who probably don't even know if they agree with each other or not, keep attacking Obama while their party implodes. Adios, amigos.

Well until then I suppose you and the Chinese government can console each other. And when the time is right in the future you can give each other high fives.

My economics 101 teacher told us you can't borrow your way out of debt.

You just cut spending to the point where you can't afford rent anymore, all so you don't have to ask your boss who makes over $250,000 a year to pay you a fair wage.

China doesn't have military aircraft in the area because it doesn't have a relationship strong enough with any country near the US to make it possible. It isn't because they want to be super duper nice, chewitup. They prefer to steal secrets by hacking, using spies, and paying off other countries to see US hardware.

So whose plan do you back, Serrano? In the past it would be pretty easy to ask a Republican where he stood, but these days with so many different types of Republicans it's kind of hard to tell....

So what happens at this point? He's confessed, even giving the exact details about how he carried out the plan. What is established at the hearing? Accepting the confession as a matter of legal record, then sentencing? Are people in this situation generally allowed to have an open platform to speak about motives when it's not necessarily related to establishing evidence of the crime itself?
