Where exactly is the line drawn? Are there protected classes? I mean if you attack a Jewish person for being Jewish, what happens if you give some kind of obscene public comment about someone who is handicapped? This isn't a joke, just wondering what the laws are and if they apply to everyone or just certain groups.

All the Supreme Court did was rule on one particular case based on the evidence of that case. And the vote was 5-4 so it's obvious there was compelling evidence on both sides. I just don't like it when people suddenly tell me that the SC "works for corporations" and yadda yadda yadda just because Wal-Mart didn't lose. I'm also sure that sexism and racism exist. But it doesn't mean women proved what they were supposed to prove.

It's actually about the abuse of religion. On it's own it can do some pretty positive things and change people's lives. I'm not a religious person but I won't define it entirely through conflicts such as this.

This is actually what one of them said: "Because respondents provide no convincing proof of a companywide discriminatory pay and promotion policy, we have concluded that they have not established the existence of any common question,” Justice Antonin Scalia said in his majority opinion."
There's a big difference between your comment and Scalia's comment.
Stats like that seem impossible to really prove. There was the old "women make X% of what men make" but it was determined by averaging all salaries/wages for women and comparing it to men. The meant Michael Jordan's salary went into calculating the average that men made. Other studies have shown that women and men, with the same experience, time on the job, and qualifications, actually ended up being about the same.
In reality you can look at pregnant black employees and Asian employees less then 6 feet tall and you won't get the same exact number because of the reasons you listed....time on the job, experience, etc. Even location plays a factor as well as the time of the hiring. A friend of mine works for a large corporation and he saw that a new employee was making more than he was (as a side point, she was female). He contacted human resources about it and they said offering salaries changed based on the time of the hire. They have to decide what a good salary would be at that particular time to get the employee they need in that location. It's a mathematical calculation. When he was hired, the number was lower. When she was hired, the number was higher. And that was that.
I'm guessing corporate starting salaries are lower now with the high unemployment rate meaning new hires will probably get less. If you hire mostly women, congrats. You've probably just opened yourself up to a lawsuit.

It's like some kind of strange pattern.....when the militants attack, Gaza loses houses. When the militants don't attack, Gaza gains houses. For the life of me I can't seem to figure out this complicated formula.

No. What they're saying is that proof of discrimination against some women doesn't mean that entire group is entitled to file a class action lawsuit on behalf of all women whether they were actually discriminated or not. There is a difference between isolated decisions and systemic policies. The court ruled that just because there is proof of discrimination against individuals it doesn't mean they have the right to include all women with the assumption that since it happened to a few it means it must have happened to all of them. Those specific women have the option of bring their own cases to court. The Supreme Court is saying that they can't apply the specifics of their case to a million women with no proof that all of them were discriminated against. It would be like a black man being fired for the wrong reasons and saying that since he was fired for being black he's going to file a class action suit on behalf of all black people just because of his situation.
You're simply saying that since these women can only file individual lawsuits and not class-action lawsuits then by definition the Supreme Court if in favor of corporation. You're ignoring the specific situation at hand and the actual legal decisions they were making based on the evidence.

There's a difference between "pushing" and "being bat-shiat crazy." Republicans are using the debt ceiling to score political points, but they know, and you know, and I know, and even this glass sitting next to me knows that they have to raise the ceiling. That's not leading or pushing, that's just being careless to the point of being dangerous. You can address the debt problem without being completely stupid about it, unless you're a Republican leader, at which point you have to talk about counterproductive policies just to make sure you don't lose in the next election because of a certain radicalized segment of your base.
Republicans do serve a worthy purpose when they're more moderate. I like the fact that they are always talking about reducing the debt or government spending. I just think they know damn well what's possible and what's practical and they too often say things they know they can't do in order to placate their own members. Right now they're acting like a good opposition party. Just blast away when you don't have much power. The problem is what will happen if they actually do get power and their constituents "remind" them about things like not raising the debt ceiling. What happens then?

tkoind2, the question that the court decided was very specific. It was about whether or not a class-action lawsuit could be filed. The Supreme Court said no. Individuals are free to file their own claims.
Blasting Wal-Mart overall does nothing to prove anything for these women, which is the topic at hand. If your position is "I'm always going to be against Wal-Mart on everything because of all of this other unrelated evidence" then there's really no point in listening to you.

What Obama does well is balance realpolitik and ideals. At the end of the day that's what an effective American president has to do.
Going too far in one direction is when you fail. Going too much in favor of realpolitik opens you up to criticism about hypocrisy and you lose credibility, and going too much in favor of idealism opens you up to slitting your own throat with counterproductive policies that sound good but ultimately fail. Obama seems to have an understanding of that and he can craft his messages accordingly. Egypt was a country was an opportunity to focus on the ideals of democracy, but a county like Yemen is a situation where idealism will mostly give Iran a foothold in the country which will make things worse. Like it or not, you don't want to be the "last honest man" who get screwed on everything, and on the other hand you don't want to be someone who can't promote the ideals of the West, which we all support. Sometimes you have to pick and choose the road you're going to take and it's full of landmines. An effective American president has to navigate through that minefield.
Republicans don't have any kind of unified response to that. They can talk about broken campaign promises but what it means is that Obama is actually doing the kinds of things Republicans want. So it's like they're saying, "Shame on you for saying one thing then doing what I wanted to do myself." It's just not a coherent message. Their only options are to focus on the economy (which the President has little control over) and healthcare (which is an emotional issue). In some ways Republicans end up speaking for the left when they say Obama broke promises and did what Republicans wanted to do. But it doesn't mean the left will shift to the right. Eroding confidence in Obama won't do much if you're selling the same policies that Obama is undertaking.
Republicans don't seem to know what they want to do. They switch back and forth between realipolick and idealism without a way to really sell it. They want to refuse to raise the debt ceiling which sounds great (idealism) but just isn't pragmatic (realipolitik). People can see through that. They want to cut government spending (idealism) but they don't seem to know how to do that while keeping realpolitick in mid. For the first time in my political life the sides have changed....the Republicans are reacting instead of leading. That used to be what the Democrats did. Republicans aren't used to being in that position and they haven't figured out a way around it.

No lives were at risk from small arms fire directed at a plane out of range. The incident highlights 1) the stupidity of the two soldiers and 2) the tension in the region in general. Not any risk to shooting down a plane.
As for "fuel" for North Korea, they producing nothing but anti-South Korean messages on a minute-by-minute basis. Oh, and they actually kill South Koreans. Perhaps for a brief moment in time their lies won't need as much imagination but it's an odd angle to take when you know North Korea is going to distort anything and everything anyway.

Firing with rifles at a plane that's obviously too far away? What the hell were they smoking? There was no threat and their response obviously had no chance of success so in the end they just look stupid.
hehe wow you nearly spun that one right off the page. You do have to give it to the North Koreans, tho. When they fire they actually kill people. But more importantly we need to understand how the South Koreans bring it on themselves with situations like this.

I'm in favor of keeping things private, but in this case a line was crossed. It's hard to imagine anyone taking him seriously when we all saw the pictures. Lying or cheating on your wife or doing whatever can be left to the imagination, but you can't sit there and tell me that you'd listen to him speak or go into a meeting with him without thinking about the pictures. Once that line is crossed he's lost his ability to effectively govern.

It's kind of funny to listen to some people talk about this burger as if its purpose was to fill the "10 patty burger" segment of the Japanese market.
People, it's called a marketing gimmick. They just got free press from JT and other outlets and this thread has 45 messages so far. Do you really think people are saying, "Gee, should I get the Tower burger or a combini sando? What do I really feel like today?" It's designed to shock, not to fool people into suddenly deciding that 10 patties sounds about right for lunch.
