Sail - one more: Santorum said - from the quote you posted - "And so to embrace her and to love her and to support her and get her through this very difficult time, I've always, you know, I believe and I think the right approach is to accept this horribly created -- in the sense of rape -- but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you."

This "gift" that God has "given" to a woman who has been raped?

I honestly don't know which is sicker - Santorum's clear assertion and belief that raped women must not abort and keep their babies irrespective of any and all other factors, or his stunningly ignorant and incrediby callous and unthinking comment that a baby that is a product of rape is somehow a "gift" from God.

A "gift"? So, is he saying that God - somehow - "gifts" babies to women who are raped?

Honestly mate, I am speechless......Santorum needs help and a lot of it.

Rick Santorum is a very sick individual, imo.

Serrano, do you also think a blanket one-size-fits-all anti-abortion law is good enough to cover all possible pregnancy scenarios?

Care to explain why, let alone how?

And no religious references please - you know full well your nation's seperation of church and state.

Sail, you seem to be implying that traditions should be accepted without question because they are traditions?

    Care to explain that?

Slavery, torture and human sacrifice were 'traditions' in many cultures in the past. Were they acceptable too, in your view?

And hey, it seems child molesting has been 'traditional' in the Catholic church for most of last century; that's the same religious institution headed by the current Pope, who was allegedly behind some of the coverup attempts.

Yes, it's the religious beliefs that have corrupted Santorum in this case.

If he were a pregnant woman himself, I'm quite certain he wouldn't be spouting this insulting garbage.

Try putting yourself in the shoes of a pregnant woman whose life is at risk if she gives birth.

Wouldn't YOU want a say in whether you lived or died??

    No?

Yabits, of course Santorum is sick.

It's just sad that folks like unreconstructed appear to tacitly approve of it.

Sail, I see what you're saying, and you're right.

But when you look at his actual words, you'll see your point is moot - "I've always, you know, I believe and I think the right approach is to ******accept ******this horribly created -- in the sense of rape -- but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you.

Accept, accept - he says 'accept' twice.

Where is the woman's choice in 'accept' (the baby)?

That's not a choice, and that's the key point.

Who goes through the pain of childbearing and labor? Whose life is potentially at risk during childbirth?

    The man??

    No, obviously, it's the woman.

But people like Santorum say the woman should have no choice in the matter.

That they should subjugate themselves to the precepts of a religion they may not even be part of, let alone believe in.

I think one of the key problems with anti-abortion laws is that they attempt to fit a one-size-fits-all approach on situations where that simply doesn’t work.

For example, what if a single or widowed mother had, say, 5 young kids, all who were dependant on her. She gets pregnant and her doctor tells her that giving birth will kill her.

The Rick Santorum’s of your country will imply, through their carefully crafted words – “Screw it – let her die!”

The result? Five kids whose futures, lives and mental states will very likely be damaged beyond repair – all for the sake of one unborn fetus who – chances are – may die during childbirth or shortly after anyway.

No, abortion needs a case-by-case assessment, and the opinions and health of the women – the very people who are the MOST valuable and essential people to the newborn and already born – MUST be taken into account, and not steamrolled over by some male with hard line religious views whose life is not at risk.

I’m really not sure what is difficult to understand about this.

Sail, when I read this article last week it almost made me sick - Santorum is sick.

    Notice this section:

'Asked by CNN's Piers Morgan what he would do if his own daughter approached him, begging for an abortion after having been raped, Santorum explained that he would counsel her to "accept this horribly created" baby, because it was still a gift from God, even if given in a "broken" way.'

    "counsel her"??

This is a very deceptive way of saying he will tell her to keep the baby because HIS warped religious views - NOT the views of the mother of the baby but the views of a man - tells him that this would be the 'right' thing to do.

No matter if she doesn't love the baby. No matter if she rejects it and even adopts it out. No matter if she abuses or neglects the baby due to it being the product of rape.

What Santorum is saying is that the views - not to mention physical and emotional health - of the woman are essentially irrelevant.

    Irrelevant.

That's one very good reason Santorum should never in a million years be elected president.

The guy is a disgrace to society and a potential threat to the health and livelihoods of women in America.

    And that's putting it mildly....

    Apologies for the rant.

It's not difficult to notice the irony - conservatives are quitting on Newt in much the same way as he quit on not 1 but 2 ex-wives.

BTW, what's become of the Tea Party that should be supporting these guys?

Where do they stand in this race?

    Oh that's right - they don't.

TP man Herman Cain endorsed Newt before the Florida primary.

TP sweetheart Our Sarah said she'd vote Newt if she were a Floridian.

The result? Newt lost Florida by double digits, ha ha ha ha ha. :-)   I mean :-(

Then TP showman - oops, I mean frontman Donald Trump endorses Mitt before the Nevada caucuses.

The result? Polling showed Trump's endorsement hurt Rmoney more than it helped it.

Then TP darling of only 2 short years ago, Sharron Angle (was she the hardline Christian who participated in that witchcraft ritual?), endorsed Rick Santorum with all the force of a wet tissue, while the TP in Nevada is falling apart.

    Oh dear. :-)

Conservatives this time are spoilt for choice.

They have a man who, in the midst of a crippling recession, is very, very keen to outlaw sodomy and control what ordinary Americans do in their own bedrooms, a lying serial adulterer and former speaker who was kicked out on ethics charges, and a financial elite who likes to pretend America's poor have what they need and that corporations are, in fact, people too.

Wow, if I were a conservative I'd be praising the Lord for such an outstanding selection of candidates who so closely reflect the base. :-)

    Didn't expect that!

A hugely funny result that shows - as has been clear from the start - that conservatives are all over the map re: who Fox News tells them is a suitable candidate this week.

Even funnier, with the race now wide open again, their candidates will waste untold more millions pounding the cr_p out of one another and exposing each others' jaw-dropping weaknesses to voters of all stripes.

Shouldn't we all be paying to watch this comedic lunacy?? :-)

I'm wondering how this ruling will directly affect the marriages of those in America who oppose same sex marriage?

The way I see it, America's religious right are largely responsible for their own teeth gnashing wrt this issue, since they hold such bigoted, anti-freedom, anti human rights views.

Ben, ok, point taken. However my thrust is not undermined at all and still stands: where is proof Iran is developing nuclear weapons?

Ben, point taken, but you missed out a few important points, which seem to be commonly missed by those in the west. I inserted them in brackets below.

Ben - "I believe that if Iran would like to have nuclear power they should obtain it with full IAEA observation. That is the best way to be sure the technology would not be used to create weapons [like those possessed and weilded  by other countries that claim Iran should not have what they themselves have had for decades in most cases] and to allow Iran the innocent power they say they want. Win - win for everyone [except for Iran, which no doubt sees the huge hypocrisy of the west.]

I think what Iran should be saying to any country making demands against it's nuclear program is essentially:

You want us to stop developing nuclear tech?  Only if you do as well.

You want us to give up wanting to develop nuclear weapons? Only if you scrap your arsenal.

You want to inspect our nuclear facilities? Only if we can inspect yours.

But I suspect logic like this is simply too much for many in the west.

Superlib, I'm still waiting for people who claim Iran has nuclear weapons to step up to the plate and provide some evidence.

No, surely that's not difficult, and yes, I am following the story, thanks for asking.

I think most sane individuals would agree that with the current state of the global economy, it's far more important to prevent another resource-sapping war than it is to prevent one that may occur sometime, possibly, in future should certain conditions be met by certain parties.....perhaps.

That's unless you're one of the alarming number of folks who have bought into the 'Iran has nukes' line.

Ben, probably you missed this - from the NYTumes way back in 2006:

"In October 2006, North Korea became the world’s eighth atomic power, conducting an underground nuclear weapons test."

So Iran doesn't have nuclear weapons?

Perhaps this a large whoopie cushion that horribly malfunctioned?

Posted in: Fears grow of Israeli attack on Iran

    SushiSake3

Ben, western leaders claimed Iran has already carried out underground nuclear tests.

They were the same 'nuclear tests' that advanced U.S. sniffer planes failed to detect any airborne radioactive materials during flyovers.

    Please keep up to date.

It would all be so laughable except for the harsh reality that this is the best the Republicans could dredge up for candidates.

Where are the serious candidates? No one needs to bring their A game because all involved are D list.

    Pretty tragic all around.
