SM2 now has an interesting dilemma. Even under Japanese law these people cannot be held until the end of the hunt without charge. To be charged they must be returned to Japan. The dilemma is break off from pursuing the Steve Irwin and take the protesters to Japan, break off and transfer them to another Japanese vessel on it's way to Japan or break off and transfer them to an Australian vessel in a brokered deal to release them.

Arrestpaul, ""Definitive" of what? There either is research being done or there isn't. It appears to me that research IS being done."
Definitive of anything. Yours and the whalers argument is there is research, regardless of its quality, therefore we must be right. It's the most cynical use of research possible. What little is done has been designed to provide nothing more than a veneer of legality and to buy time. If you believe the research is legitimate, the only one whose been fooled is you.

The whalers research resembles the nonsense served up by the smoking lobbyists for years. Its designed to provide just enough argument to cause delay and doubt. The vested interests love this veneer of respectability.
No one accepts the research as definitive and the majority of IWC members wont agree to a resumption of whaling because there is no strong evidence whale numbers have recovered sufficiently to resume hunting. All that can be guestimated is that Japan could hunt small numbers. No thought to the others that want to hunt and no thought to thef ear and pain caused to the animals.

So you dont deny the FBIs agenda then?
Watsons the head of an organisation of lobbyists, their sole aim is to raise funding and increase the the public profile of the whaling issue. Sea Shepherd is very successful too.

No mate, I'm saying the whalers are arguing on a technicality. The ICJ will decide whether they're operating within the law or not.

I think the FBIs agenda is the same as the whalers. Maintain the budget and justify their own existence.

Arrestpaul, your arguments are all manufactured doubt designed to undermine confidence. Until the ICJ makes its determination the whalers are technically operating within the law. However it's impossible to argue that the method of killing whales is anything other than cruel. That is why the whalers can never be in the right and this issue can't go away.

Ossanamerica, the FBI has its own agenda. If SS were a terrorist organisation they should have proven their claim and had SSs charity status revoked and the organisation shut down. Its not happened.
Your selective quote didnt manage to exclude the note that Watson refused Coronado's application to rejoin SS's expedition once he was wanted for arrest. You missed a bit of editing there I think.
Sea Shepherd certainly are risking their lives. Putting yourself in harms way and threatening peoples livelihoods carries risk . It is a measure of their dedication.

Riffraff - "Japan never stopped whaling"
Oh contraire, Japan did in fact agree to the moratorium ine xchange for fishing rights off the US coast. When those fishing rights were rescinded Japan then came up with the 'Research' whaling programme as a way of maintaining a veneer of legality. The number of whales Japan takes is not in fact limited. They can take as many as they decide to declare.
"But since you never hear anything Norway or Iceland or… God Forbid… the United States, all the hatred is focused on Japan"
Again incorrect. Norway and Iceland both lodged objections to the moratorium and continue to hunt. Pressure is brought to bear and very publicly too. The Norway and Iceland hunt are heavily criticised by the EU. There are annual and very public demonstrations at the Faroes hunts which like Japans are often justified on the basis of maintaining food culture.
Muddying the waters with technical arguments of legality, paltry results of research from bought and paid for scientists, accusations of racism and cultural imperialism, name calling and nationalism are great tools of deflection for the lobbyists.
Diplomacy, and lobbying has fallen on deaf ears. Sea Shepherds robust demonstration is proving effective at raising the public profile of the cruelty of whaling and the ongoing madness of overfishing. More grist to their mill!

Arrestpaul, it is you that is wrong. Arrest and being told to leave is not a terrorist conviction. Even Pete Berhune wasn't convicted of any terrorist offence. Your name calling is a cheap attempt to get a rise and continue the spiral of insult and failure to engage.
As for the Brigitte Bardot being to fragile. She was built to circumnavigate the world at record speed. Which she did very successfully. A freak wave can catch and damage any vessel, especially one engaged in upsetting a whale hunt.

"Every action nthat the reserch whalers have taken regading the SSCI eco[terrtprists has been defensive to protect themselves and their activity"
Thats BS and you know it. Sea Shepherd has attacked no Japanese whaler. They try to block the operations by making it as tough as possible for the whalers to work. In response the whalers have employed military hardware and homemade weapons.
If SS were the terrorists you continue to bleat about then surely they would have been arrested on charges of terrorism. Sadly for your argument Interpol wont issue an arrest order, Watson remains free and the organisation maintains charity status in its home territory.
SS tactics against Japans whalers have had the desired effect, their stated aim is to make the whaling operation too expensive to maintain. This year the authorities have resorted to controversial extra budgets to afford the military presence. That cant go on forever. Its a huge disappointment that more animals must die in this most cruel manner, but Sea Shepherds operation continues to raise the whalers profile and their costs.

Its all well and good name calling and whining. Sea Shepherd have already succeeded. Forcing the Japanese whalers to suck up more money to justify their hunt will make it much harder to get funding. The Brigitte Bardot will be back next season, if not then an equally good replacement. Scow or not if it can get in the way it can do its job.

GW, HSBC have sold their private banking business. Its about high net worth individuals as opposed to retail. There are a good few banks in the UK setting about separating retail, private and investment banking businesses ahead of upcoming stricter regulation.
Maybe HSBC sees little growth in high net worth custom in Japan? Or maybe this is a nother bail out as in the ABN AMRO RBS farce? Time will tell I suppose.

Davidattokyo, 'SwissToni, "It's the efficacy and need for that research that is in doubt." Only in doubt by anti-whalers.
Thats stating the obvious. I'd hardly expect the whalers to go through all this nonsense and than agree any of the whales they sample are unsuitable to be harvested.
I think you will find though that there are others who arent actively anti-whaling who doubt the efficacy of Japans whale research too.

Davidattokyo, ' I suspect an International Court of Justice ruling in favour of Japan will act as such a trigger for a great many such anti-whalers, who like me, do respect the law.'
I doubt that. I dont see such a judgement reducing the barbarity of the hunt. I think it would spur them on to get a change in the law.

Dotobock, 'There is lots of anti Japan racism by the likes of anti whalers, especially SS.'
You are so wide of the mark. Sea Shepherd and other anti whaling groups have and are quite happy to tackle nations other than Japan.
Its fair to say this website and this issue attract a good few who want to take an easy shot at Japan. But it attracts its fair share of oversensitive souls too.

Arrestpaul, ' so you agree that scientific whaling is being conducted'
I can only agree that is how Japans whalers have named their hunt. I believe the data gathered is a byproduct of a commercial hunt, rather than the meat a byproduct of a scientific hunt.
I would rather the whales werent killed, there'd be no waste then.
