By saying broke down, he probably mean torn down or demolished... I hope people can find some peace up there with their new pianos.

I wouldn't say as far as the Japanese being more mature than your average westerner, but I agree with nukeprotest 100% on the campaining thing.
Even the bicycles that fill up whatever space there are near the stations are warned what date they will be collected by the city. Anybody wanting it back, will need to pay some fee.
Some people just don't realize that some things are against the law, so people need to be educated. Of course there are people who know, but does it anyways...

Good for them. Catch those violaotors. I am tired of trying to teach people to stay on the right side of the road (right meaning left, BTW...).

My older child caught the flu (A-type, Hong Kong) last month, but none other in my family came down with it. These things are pretty mysterious, since I ate her leftover (mottainai...) the very night her temperature shot sky high. Also, we sleep in the same room. Am I immune to it?

I've seen the Trick Art Museum in Takao. It's pretty fun taking pictures like this one. Especially for kids.

Ones at Yomiuri-land.
They are so colourful and cheerful. Try the ferris wheel on the top of the hill there. Beautiful.
Too long though. It lasts until March next year...

jeffery, you make it sound so easy. I'm not opposing you know, as I mentioned in my previous post. Just applauding this man. But you make it sound so so easy...

jeffrey, as you can see in your quote of my comment, I didn't really think about how to rebuild in other places. I was merely saying that this man did a very good job. That is of dividing "work" and "home". Fishermen willingly live close to the ocean. This village succeeded in putting the homes in a safe place, but as close to "work" as possible by building this massive wall to protect them.
As for other places, I don't know if there are any single solution. Rebuilding on higher ground sounds reasonable enough, but finding land seems difficult hearing new about building temporary housings. I hope they find a solution soon.

I don't see the point in the people of this particular village rebuilding inland. These people are fishermen or otherwise related to the ocean, so they need to be close to it.
This man was very intelligent in suggesting that they save their homes (and lives) but allowing fishermen to be just fishermen. Which is a risk most of these people were and still are willing to take. As a result, even if their business is in ruins, almost all of the people are accounted for (except for the one with the wrong choice) so they can live to rebuild.

I agree with all of the above and also feel for the children who survived this tragedy to hear of the fate of their friends. I hope they can live on strong as this mother has shown.

Japan has it's share of petty thieves, as you hear about news of houses broken in, gas stolen from cars, but I guess compared to the looting and violence seen in other disaster areas, most people are patient and tolerant.
In the old law, the police will hold them for 6 months before doing anything about it, but it's three now, so even if noboth is there to claim them, I hope they could open them up asap and return them to their rightful owners (or successors).

The article mentions video games, so it's probably a game centre.
I am relieved that the girl was OK. I hope the 28 year old learnt his lesson and never try anything like this again.

This is a good article. It's true, he is no hero or flop. Not even the LDP is criticizing him too much over his actions in the early stages of the crisis.
Still, I don't think Kan will win in the next election, but neither would the LDP. At least not as big as they anticipated before the crisis.

I watch TV endlessly showing the same sort of news over and over. Read too much articles on the internet about people who survived the disaster and who didn't. It's depressing to see whole lines of open shelves at supermarkets or convenis. Tend to ride bicycles more rather than take the car out for a drive. It's hard to get back to what life was like before 3.11...

The only place I ran into the name Sam Choy's was in an Outlet in Yokohama. It's only fast-food mostly under 1,000yen. Is it really related to this man? It wasn't bad, but it's Hawaian food = loco moco kind of restaurant.
I would like to try their restaurants with real food.

Yes, definately cherry blossoms. You can also see that the petals are slit at the tip.
The bird was identified by Goals0 as a Mejiro=White-eye as you can see from it's looks.
So beautiful. This is the best season in Japan. Hope I can take my kids on a picnic soon! Hanami-bento and all :)
