JGal...that is what selling yen means...lol...Japan no longer has control over its own currency, and interventions have proven mostly to be a waste of time. Japan has to fix its social and political situation, in order to effectively restart it economy again. The problem is that the people in gov't do not care about the rest of the population. They have it good, so that is what matters. Japan's wealthy are moving boatloads of money to Singapore to avoid the coming losses when the govt and banks can no longer sustain the internal debt load, and begin wiping out savings and investment funds held by private citizens, claiming it is the only way to fix things. Long term investment here is a fatal decision.

Japanese debts are 95% internal meaning they are relatively safe. So it is wrong to assume that the government will no long be able to sustain the internal debt load. The gov merely has to raise some tax and print some money as the last resort. The Japanese economy is still based on manufacturing so it's safer than the economy that base it on finance like the U.S .

I tend to think that by "letting the cat out of the bag", he has made certain the yen won't dip below 76 yen to the dollar again! Who's going to dare buy the yen at 76-yen level when they know there's a huge intervention imminent?

Hedge funds will lower the yen until 75 yen and then buy yen back to make money from the intervention. That's what they do. That's how average Joe blow trader got screwed in the last intervention announcement. By announcing that the gov is going to intervine, one may think people will not buy yen anymore but the hedge funds purposely bought yen to screw the average joe traders.

Print lots of Yen. That will fix it.

You are right! Printing yen will devalue the yen. People should see how much the U.S and China has printed money in last few years compared to how much the yen has been printed. 76.5 yen is still cheap if you see it respectively.

In a rare moment of transparency, Japanese are shocked! That's pretty scary in of itself

That's a stupid comment. You shouldn't reveal the forex intervention line because the hedge funds will come and screw the market. Your comments makes no sense.

    what's the difference between a " talent " and an actress ?

    • I think it's kind of trivial but I guess in Japan actresses are those who acts in movies and drama while the talent appears in variety and comedy shows.
    • Talents are usually associated with laughter.

    @Weasel

have the financial markets stay focused on the Eurozone, as opposed to actually focusing on Japan's debt-to-GDP ratio (at 2010 it was at a whopping 220% - depending upon who's numbers you use).

The nature of Japanese debt is very different of that of Greece, Italy and Spain. 95% of Japanese debt is an internal debt. Virtually all Government borrowing is funded internally in Japan from domestic savers, with close to nil reliance on international markets. That makes Japan relatively immune to the sovereign debt jitters that have afflicted European economies.

Oginome repeatedly insisted that South Koreans couldn't manufacture a pair of chopsticks, let alone a car, without the input of Japan-made components and Japanese technical know-how

I think the point that Oginome was trying to convey was not an arbitrary nonsensical idea that the Chinese or Koreans are inferior to the Japanese but just merely stating the current fact on how global high tech industries are reliant on Japanese high tech parts to produce end user goods as iPhones, PCs , smartphones and etc.

The facts are facts and are judgement free. It's an analysis of current market and nothing more.

Hmmm... I honestly feel that the issues of WW2 atrocities such as "comfort women" and "Rape of Nanking" are being used to advance political and economical agenda of the S.Korea and the Chinese. The Chinese government uses the issue to redirect the public discontent for the Chinese government and the Koreans uses the issue to (1) milk money from the J-government and (2) to blame their misfortune of past histories to the Japanese. Don't get wrong, WW2 atrocities existed but the motivation in the current anti Japan sentiment is created and is propaganda.

Wow this is a crazy news if you think about it.

A court has jailed a doctor who paid gangsters for a kidney for himself that had been taken from a man who reportedly owed money to an organized crime gang.

Doing business with gangsters is always always a bad idea even though it might seem that you will likely profit in the short term, in the long term the gangstas will always will try to milk you. The risk outweighs the benefit you have received from using gangster service.

I have friend who used to be the manager of underground casino ran by the Yaks in Tokyo. Well my friend was not a Yak and people were operating the casino were not Yaks. Mr friend told me that people who were operating the casinos made hefty amount of money latter to be extortioned by the Yaks. So in the end they take what they have given you. My friend had to leave the country needless to say.

Well most services are generally very good in Japan. One of the complaints I have is that sometimes Japanese services are too structured. If you want something not on the menu list, the employee has to always get permission from the superior who needs to gets permission from the head office and etc and ect. And often not the answer is no. LOL I used to miss the casual chit chats in stores in N.America when I came back to Japan but I found out that you can make chit chats in Japanese stores as well. It's how you approach them and it often takes a few trip to the store too.

South Korea companies were one of the most affected by the 3.11 earthquake that hit last year. They depend heavily on Japanese supplies such as LCD glass, chip equipment, silicon wafers and other products to produce semiconductors.

Global companies from semiconductor makers to shipbuilders are Japanese high tech reliant and faced disruptions to operations after the 3.11 earthquake and tsunami destroyed vital infrastructure and knocked out factories producing everything from high-tech components to steel.

South Korean shipbuilders are also reliant on Japanese steels and faced supply constraints or higher prices due to disruptions caused by the 3.11 quake and its aftermath. By the way South Korea houses the world's top three shipbuilders -- Hyundai Heavy Industries , Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine and Samsung Heavy Industries.

What Oginome is saying is right. You could check the facts by yourself if you look at the import data of Korea. South Korean technologies are heavily dependent on Japan high tech and their import/export data proves that.

No offense to anyone but some of you guys really ought to study world economics. Japan has the largest foreign assets in the world meaning it is the richest country in the world. Japanese debt is 95% internal debts meaning, the type of debts is difference from Greece and Italy. That is some of the reasons why investors have been flocking to yen over other currencies. Japan is a big contributor in IMF. I think 1st or 2nd in terms of volume. Japan rocks!
