What a terrible sight for innocent bystanders to witness... especially kids.

    @Disillusioned: You're joking... right?

This type of accident is all too common in this country, press the gas instead of the brake.

Not unique to Japan. Google 'mistakes gas pedal for brake' (on American google) and see all the stories that come up. Not to mention most Americans don't want to admit making such a simple mistake (gas pedal for brake) and blame the car so it goes unreported as a gas/brake pedal mistake.... 'OMG! It suddenly accelerated!' ...but that's another can of worms.

    Sad story indeed.

Considering the fact that this occurred as they were pulling into the parking lot, they may have prematurely taken their seat belts off? I do that often (especially if I'm in a rush). Not a good habit I guess.

Agree with Triumvere. Should be 4.5 years per victim.

Uhhhh.... yes NetNinja... that's what prison is all about. But you forgot to mention that she has no freedom... minor detail.

It's so interesting that such women are defended by society and given good credit automatically for being a woman.

Who's defending her??? Where does it say she was given good credit???

20,000 dollars seems a bit low to me

Really? Their company is paying a 500 million dollar fine. I'd say the weight of knowing that $500 million is coming out of their fellow employees' pay checks and pockets is pretty hefty, don't you think? The $20,000 fine was probably aimed at sparing the livelihoods of the perps' families who are innocent and will be without their fathers' income for years to come..

How inconceivably sad and tragic for the lives lost, and for the ones left behind.

...and a salute to these people for their relentless efforts for a job in which the results are as depressing as the process of achieving them.

I love it too, cause we live in a country where before long (in all probability, even today) there will be headlines of a stabbing, or a police stealing, groping, peeping, or drunken incident, and speaking of "beating it", there will likely be a tale of a parent beating/burning/poisoning their child. Yes, I love that we live in this country too! And don't forget those hit and runs! oh yes, and the kids falling from balconies and people jumping in front of trains, and all of the other events that don't get reported.

@Maitake: 1) As the mods would say, this is an article about a stolen bike being found. Not about other crimes. And 2) If you're gonna start comparing the crime section from news websites around the world, then you're damn right Japan is a better place to be than most other countries.

Not newsworthy in my books. Weird news maybe, but for the crime section of a national news website? Naah.

Another weirdo. I wonder what kind of neighborhood she was walking through.

Although I agree with previous posters who have been commenting and voicing concern regarding the apparent increase of crimes like this, I still think it's relatively safe in Japan. 1 or 2 reports like this a day in a country of 130 million.... not great news, but I'd rather be here than most other places in the world.

all in all, I'd say 53 injuries in a city of 14 million is pretty good. Despite some of the macho posturing here (amateurs?), I wonder how many injuries there'd be in less populated Toronto, Montreal, Chicago etc. after a storm. Probably the same.

Oh hell ya, I agree with you. My comment was a joke hoserfella. Just something I felt I had to say as a Canadaian. When ice (not snow) is involved, it doesn't matter how you walk, or if you have 4wd, abs, or snow tires, there's no way to travel safe.

To NTT Docomo: Please do not insult our intelligence.

According to this article, the docomo glitch affected 2.5 million people, while the train stoppage affected 120,000 people, of whom only a certain percentage would have docomo cell phones. How pathetic to blame a completely different company for its own faulty system.

Please cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing! Also use soap when washing your hands. This is common sense, but this isn't a common sense country.

    Wanda-kunJan. 22, 2012 - 02:34AM JST

Oh, and by the way, the stupid masks don't do any good.

suzukakid, Wanda-kun: The masks aren't to prevent the person wearing it from catching an illness, they are to prevent people who have a bug from spreading it when they cough or sneeze and don't cover their mouth sufficiently or in time. Most Japanese people do stay home when they have a fever, but most try not to stay home too long... and even if you do stay home for 'a couple of days' you're still carrying the virus before and after symptoms arise. Common sense says that when you have a country that's smaller than the state of California, and you cram 130 million people into it, you're bound to have flu epidemics.... not that there isn't any more we can do to prevent its spread.

Ivan Coughanoffalot: Good idea with the soap in the train stations, but how about taking it a step further with those anti-bacterial alcohol pump stations on every train/car? That way you don't need water or a sink. Just spray, rub hands, and go! Actually, I think some people carry around their own these days.

Quick question for anyone who can answer it: How many Japanese news papers did this make the cover of? Is my guess of zero correct?

Oh Smith, always quick to point out one of the 'countless shortcomings' of Japan and its people using barely relevant comments aren't you? In this case, a rhetorical question which I choose to answer with: Who the hell cares? So what if the Japanese media doesn't report inconvenient stories about a Japanese national becoming and international criminal? I've got a rhetorical question for you: How many media outlets in the world are truly sincere, honest, and don't give a damn about ratings? Zero.

Anyways, glad to hear that justice was served. I just hope the mother someday comes to her senses and can have a 'healthy' relationship with her ex-husband and daughter, but that's highly doubtful after all that's happened.
