This is the internet, Tahoochi, we have the space for small stories. And there's nothing like a bit of a safety scare for small children.

Saborichan: What you say may be true if there was a "Small Stories" section, and this story was in it... unfortunately, this story is in the "National" news section.

Sorry for the kid and mother, but is this worthy of "national" news??? I would understand if the escalator company or the store was facing charges of negligence and this was on the verge of being a precedent setting case or something... Should we take this as a good sign, that there are no other events worse than this happening in Japan?

In Japan, the police run around taking pictures of "Bousouzoku" (bike gangs) and do nothing to arrest them. In the US, cops chase criminals at high speeds endangering the lives of countless innocent bystanders... there's got to be happy medium somewhere, where criminals are brought to justice without taking innocent lives.

Helter skelter: Sorry, forgot about the sport. I'm not a leftist or right wing or anything... just myself. You have to admit though, guns were invented for one reason only, and that's killing.

There are an estimated 200 million guns in the US

Holy @$#%! That's an unbelievable amount of product out there with the sole purpose of killing. As much as I am for banning guns, there's no WAY a ban on guns would be a success in the US with that many guns (most of them are probably illegal anyway). Not to mention, if the US government announced they were to ban guns, can you guess what every gun owner is going to do? ...stockpile illegal guns.

Even if von Brunn couldn't buy guns legally, there's no doubt that he would have had countless connections to supply him with guns, given his white supremacist, military, and prison backgrounds.

Glad to hear the poor girl is doing ok. Where do all of these parents go wrong in raising there children??? I'd really like to know so my kid doesn't grow up to be a psycho... SERIOUSLY.

DISILLUSIONED: I think you should start an anti-Japan club or something.

there are still people making comparisons with the rest of the world and saying, "it's worse in other countries." What a load of BS!

Do we really have to get into a murder per capita argument here? Your argument wouldn't stand a chance if we did.

In other countries you can judge who will give you trouble and where you are likely to find it. But, in Japan it could be anyone.

Actually, in my opinion, in other countries there are WAY TOO MANY places and people who you can judge that will give you trouble... does that make it safer???

"But in Japan it could be anyone"????? I don't know where you are from, but have you forgotten about Colombine High School and several other college/university shootings in the US??? 9/11??? Not to mention all of the car chases, convenient store and gas station hold-ups and robberies, that end up with dead people that don't get national or international press because they happen everyday in "other countries"??? Like I said, I don't know where you are from, but it just seems like the only things that you mention here on JT are bad things about Japan... what gives???

Altria: With all due respect (because I hate censorship as well), this isn't censorship. It's a company helping parents decide what their children (not adults) can access. Mind you, like ronaldk mentioned above, kids will probably find a way anyway... my friends dad kept a stack of Playboys underneath the bathroom sink

I think this is great, especially for only 315 yen/mo. The rest is up to the parents...

why do all these solutions never address the fact that these "kids" want to access these sites... oh yeah, kids would never do that, it's the evil internet forcing them to seek out those links.

hereandthere: You've got a point, but other than parents teaching their kids about moral values, this is about all that can be done because as long as those "inappropriate" sites are out there, kids will ALWAYS want to "click". Give a kid a box and tell him/her not to open it... you know they'll open it! The pros and cons of the internet.

A mandatory and surefire method to confirm age over the internet would be another possible "solution".

And while he might have been underperforming some of Chrysler’s sales criteria, Walsh claims some of that was the automaker’s fault, pointing to its insistence that he sell more pickup trucks—a vehicle unsuited to the densely populated urban strip he serves across the Hudson River from New York City.

While I sympathize with these dealers and the families/communities that are involved, I just don't think finger-pointing is the classy way to go. And if you are going to point fingers, point correctly, because whether or not Chrysler "insisted" he sell more trucks is beside the point, as he didn't sell enough cars in general to remain off the hit list.

With that said, I think Chrysler's poor management is pretty obvious after hearing this statement:

Chrysler officials were pushing dealers to help save the company by boosting their inventories earlier this year.

Why is this so regular in Japan ?

Potsu: do you mean accidents in the home? or accidents involving kids falling from apartment buildings?

I guess either way, accidents in the home are the parents responsibility (whether they are more prevalent in Japan than in other countries is a question). I guess we have to keep in mind too, that there are an unbelievable number of apartment buildings or "mansions" (condos) in Japan due to lack of space, which is all the more reason why we should be even more careful.

Country roads: TONS of beautiful scenery in the mountains, by the ocean (both are almost everywhere in Japan)

Driving lessons: Is a MAJOR hassle if you are applying for a license for the first time in Japan, but like most other posters have said, not if you have a license from another country.

Blinkers: Disagree... it's worse in Canada/US, especially away from the city where people don't even signal at all

Insurance/Shaken/Parking/Tolls: Yes, all way to expensive in my opinion and way to inefficient, but maybe it's intentional

As other posters have mentioned, red light running is a major downside. However, I do like the well maintained roads (I guess that's why they have tolls)

I disagree. I think they ALL treat their children like a fashion accessory.

neverknow2: Would you say that to my face if you weren't sitting at your computer?... I hope you would, because I'd knock that opinion right out of your silly little noggin. I'm a parent in Japan and I DO NOT treat my child as a fashion accessory.

More young Japanese parents need to be educated about the "accidents at home" statistic that westerners have been told.

It's possible that the man came home and found his dead wife hanging, couldn't bear to see her that way, and brought her down. This is understandable, but not smart because that makes him look suspicious.

Does anyone know what Ford's doing to stay afloat? I know they're in trouble too, but not as bad as Chrysler, GM. Ford also did not take any Government loans, so they must be doing something right... or they must be doing something better than GM.

Japanese game shows are just an extension of the tremendously pointless "variety show" programs... hence they can't be compared to game shows that Westerners (at least North Americans) are familiar with. Most JP game shows and the ones mentioned in this article only use stars as contestants... hence the low level of IQ. To me, that's not a game show; utilizing common everyday people is what makes game shows in North America fun to watch (ie. Who wants to be..., Price is right, Family feud, Jeopardy, etc. etc.) besides, stars don't need anymore money than they already have anyway!

Government run GM??? What do you guys think of that? They'd probably cause even more debt and even add a little corruption into the mix... oh wait, that was JR before they privatized.
