61% of single men aged 18-34 have no girlfriend; 49% of women unattached: survey

Personally, I don't see what the problem is or why everybody here is trying to identify "the cause". 61% of SINGLE men have no girlfriend.... think about it: what percentage of SINGLE men should have girlfriends then? Maybe a lot of the men surveyed previously had girlfriends but happened to be single at the time of the survey. What percentage of ALL men in Japan are single? Is that number dropping? If over 80% surveyed said they want to eventually get married, then what's the problem? Is it the low birth rate issue? Is that what the article is implying? Maybe the article is poorly written? Lack of a point? Sorry, just speaking my mind...

I would without a doubt buy imported, because personally I think Thai, Basmati, Jasmine, and even Wild Rice from North America (mixed in with regular rice) taste FAR better than the bland and unhealthy (at least in terms of digestion) white rice you get here. But again that won't change a Japanese person from stopping after three chews to close their eyes and say, "Umai' if you told them the rice is from Japan.

smithinjapan: Do you blame them for liking Japanese rice over others? They've been eating the stuff since they were kids. I think it's a perfectly natural preference.

On the other hand, I'm sure there will be many people like you who prefer other types of rice, or don't care where the rice comes from, as long as it tastes decent and is cheap. I think a lot of Japanese people say they like rice made in Japan because truthfully very few other countries make rice similar to Japanese rice. And I'm sure if your average Japanese tried some rice similar to Japanese rice, but made in say, California, they would find it just as suitable to their pallets as Japanese rice (as 100million n U won? mentioned in the very first post).

When most Japanese people say "Japanese rice is the best", I think what they mean to say is "I like Japanese rice the most", which I think is a perfectly normal personal preference, and not for anyone to criticize; just like you and your preference for Thai rice.

With the TPP the colonization will be almost complete. An influx of new products, a change in advertising and media, a new life that begets a new culture......a Western culture. TPP will bring this new culture that will force new ideas and change education....

NetNinja: Very interesting point of view you have there, and is probably be true to an extent, but maybe not as much as you think, or as quickly as you think. IMHO, there is already a s-load of common products made cheap overseas and bought by Japanese consumers (ie. clothing, electronics, and ingredients for many prepared foods). I don't think the TPP wil change Japan as much as you say it will.

By 2013, the company hopes that 30 percent of its managers will be female.

You see, this is what I hate about equality "movements". You end up with potential reverse discrimmaination. If you're shooting for true "equal opportunity", then this quota of 30 percent female managers is BS. Give every person the opportunity to perform, then reward the most capable one with the job. You may end up with 20 percent female managers, or you may end up with 60 percent female managers...... regardless, you will have provided equal opportunity to all. Same goes for what the American government calls "Visible Minorities" (which includes women).

    Poor kid. Poor family.

I feel so fortunate to have so many knowledgeable engineers on this forum who know what the problem was, what could have been done to prevent this tragedy, and most importantly, who is to blame.... all from an article consisting of a few paragraphs.

Agree with BurakuminDes. The constant one-sided coverage was terrible, and I started watching the match thinking this, but I still found that I was cheering for Japan as the game went on.... maybe because of their outstanding play and teamwork.

So what do we have to feel proud about living in Japan? I mean seriously, what is there? Yes there are many nice things, but I feel that there are far more sick, cruel, crazy and disgusting things about life and living in Japan.... Which is very sad.

    Get out of Tokyo much?

Why the anti-Japan comments? Sadly, this crap (pardon the pun) goes on in the west as well.

My thoughts exactly. I remember recently reading about a hidden camera in a Starbucks in Washington.... sick people are everywhere!

Give them a company cell phone and a small premium for being on-call 24/7. On the other hand, being on-call 24/7 should be only in case of emergency. Additionally, bosses who can't respect their subordinates' time management and can't tell the difference between an emergency and non-emergency should not be bosses.

Raising the consumption tax will be a divisive issue for Noda's government which is grappling with social security and tax reform, as well as a strong yen.

It's not a strong yen, it's a weak dollar and euro.... and besides, if they're going to raise the consumption tax, then by God, reduce the prices of everything purchased from other countries! It just doesn't make sense that we should pay more for things purchased from overseas amid a so called "strong yen".

Proof that compassion for others in your area (neighborhood spirit) still does not exist n Japan.

...there is seriously something wrong here, not only in a little house in Sendai, but across the whole country.

@tokyokawasaki and Dent Shop: I live in a very tight-knit community where everybody knows eachother. To me, that's proof that compassion for others DOES exist in Japan. With stories like this in the news, I don't think it's fair to assume things like this are the norm in Japan. Abnormal and shocking stories make the news. Normal and everyday stuff (including neigbors being friendly to eachother) does not make the news. That should be obvious.

But in this particular case, I agree with other posts; it's sad when nobody notices your gone for 6 months.

It was a fairly good read for me. I agree with the general concept of "respecting the system" that the author is pushing. Knowing the right people and knowing who to trust are also important (especially in a business setting).... in a scary way, it's kind of the mafia where you could be gold one minute, and then "whacked" the next minute by the same people who commended you. This can happen even if you have performed well or have done something commendable, but you are too bold or arrogant afterwards (which is also something that the author doesn't recommend). This is called "Choushi ni noru" , or "getting carried away".

Going to be a lot of interesting flotsam for sale in the junk stores for years, and decorating front lawns.

I wonder if some people will find some cold hard cash mixed in there too? Many old school Japanese folks keep their savings under tatami boards and in wardrobes. Of course, the right thing for people who find any cash would be to turn it into the authorities who would pool that money and send it to Japan......

......the incapability to solve problems through verbal communication is truly unique to Japan.

@Munya Times: Simply not true. Don't know where you get this from, but all you have to do is watch/read the news (other than JT) of other countries around the world to know otherwise.

@Jeff Huffman: Thanks, but I still don't understand. The article clearly states:

Major beverage makers there have traditionally bought up smaller firms in other countries, but the rise in the value of the Japanese currency -among other factors- is leading them to seek to export more.

If Asahi sells a beer for $3 in the US, then the sales to Asahi in Japan (because it's a Japanese company) would be what, 230yen? Before the yen was strong, that same $3 beer in the US would have raised over 300yen.

......maybe it's just the wording in the article. Because it would make sense if they are establishing more overseas distribution and brewing like you say, but only as long as they do it in countries with less mfg. cost than the likes of Japan or the US right?
