To those posters blaming this poor girl:
It's obvious that she was lacking in common sense at the time so there no need to reinforce the blame on a dead person. Tons of people do stupid things on the railings at Niagara Falls every day and it's a surprise there aren't more accidental deaths. It's just tragic to see such a young life gone to waste because a brief moment of bad judgement. RIP

ReformedBasher: The article says:
A neighbor could mean 10 doors down the street in the same neighborhood... not next door.
On another note, don't know if it's true, but I've heard before that the best way to "subdue" a pit bull or the like from a deadly attack (not if he/she just nips at you) is to grab each of its front legs, and pull them outwards (this may kill the dog depending on how far you pull though).

As some have already stated, breaking so many tanks would make a lot of noise, and not to mention would take some time for one person to do (ie. one person couldn't do it in a few seconds and flee). Maybe yakuza, or an insurance scam? I dunno.

I have seen many people all over the world not wear life vests on yachts, row boats, fishing boats, etc... however, what people do on their private boats is at their own risk. This is a business that takes people on boat tours... hence, they should be held liable.

While I agree with others that this is very promising news, remember that this is money that was turned in or found by relief workers (police, rescue, etc.). The question is how much was reported lost by the people and how much of that amount was recovered. Either the NPA is avoiding that question, or the media has been told not to report it. My guess is that most people in Japan who keep their savings at home in cash do not have safes. They rely on "under the tatami", or simple dresser drawers. That means there was lots of cash out there "floating around" for crooks to find and keep with close to zero probability of being caught.

Alphaape, let's put it another way: Which scenario do you think offers the better chance of survival; Someone coming at you with a gun pointed towards your head, or someone coming at you with a knife pointed at your chest.
Sure, disarming someone with a knife is no cake walk, but I'll take disarming a guy with a knife over disarming a guy with a gun any day.
To me, this article tells me chances of surviving knife attacks are a lot better than gun attacks. How many articles have we seen recently on JT about fights breaking out in the US involving guns and ending up with dead people? If this shoplifter had a gun instead of a knife, the probability of one of those victims being killed would certainly increase, don't you think?

Obviously not. I know what you're getting at, but not everyone is brought up in that type of environment. Not that I codone this at all, just saying.

sfjp330: That's why I said China requires foreign car makers to form JV's with China car makers...... to ensure the survival of their own brands. But if you read some14some's comment, or the rest of my comment, you would know that the global market is not looking promising right now anyways. But that doesn't matter if you're making cars in China or India simply because of the potential domestic demand for cheap cars (one third of the world's population in China and India, and most of them don't have cars).

I know it's no use speculating, but is it safe to say this was most likely premeditated? Why else would the guy go to a snack bar with a concealed knife? Protection?

As a foreigner to the UK, I would think that most sensible people around the world know and understand that this is not a reflection of the local general population. It's just some immature punks being irresponsible..... but still, I also understand how someone from the UK would be embarrassed as well. I am from Vancouver, and I was embarrassed after the rioting there following the Canucks loss in the Stanley Cup finals.

You're right, and that's why most global automakers have to form a JV with those local brands. I believe China even makes it a requirement (probably more so to protect their local brands).
Another point to note is that even if the world stock markets are heading in the opposite direction, China and India have enough population (potential demand) for their domestic markets which is seen as major opportunities for global automakers. In other words, they don't have to make cars in China/India and sell to the world when they can just sell domestically with so much potential demand. The only problem is they have to find a balance between affordable cars for the general population, and prevention of sky-rocketing labor costs like they are seeing in some areas of China right now.

smithinjapan: I'm thinking psychotic tendencies and bad classroom management skills are quite different. Many psychos do a very good job of acting normal when they want to, despite any sort of training and/or screening (not just in the education industry, and not just in Japan).

Crazyjoe: I agree. Under no circumstances whatsoever would I ever believe in the future that one of these weirdos has been rehabilitated or "turned a new leaf". Let'em all rot in the world's most severe prison until they die.
And to ihavegreatlegs and tokyokawasaki: You seem disappointed that there were no Japanese in the list so far. Well you know what? There probably are, but I don't understand why you are so eager to see them there. A major global community of pedophiles and child porn distributors have been caught here and that's that. Sure there are lots of weirdo Japanese pedophiles who should be arrested, but why single out the Japanese as if you're looking forward to seeing some "Japanese" people on the list? The article is proof that kiddie porn is unfortunately alive and abundant in other countries..... and don't tell me that Japan is no. 1 in the world because I'd like to see some data to back that up..... and don't tell me that high school students in bikinis is child porn, because if it was, then it would be internationally illegal (not that I have any interest in it or would want my daughter to do something like that)..... and don't tell me that there are way more pedophiles or child porn owners in Japan than other countries due to its legality to own it here because that doesn't mean there are simply more in Japan, it just means that child porn owners in Japan are not getting caught or punished (not that that is a good thing).... it just seems to me from your comments that you have something against the general population of Japan. In fact, the article doesn't even mention Japan, so why do you?

Obviously the Chinese government thinks everybody including its own people are stupid.
This whole incident is a reflection of the big picture regarding China's "booming" industry and economy since joining in on the global market. This is what happens to safety, quality, and service if you don't start learning new things from the basics and fundamentals.
