In some cases yes, but many people, even without self defense training, could potentially stop or reduce the effects of a knife coming at them, but how many people do you know who can stop a bullet? .... a bomb??? Good luck. Guns are meant for killing and nothing else.
Also, in this particular case, it doesn't sound like the guy was "hell-bent" on killing these people from the beginning (from the time he entered the facility). It sounds like a fight escalated, then this moron suddenly remembered he had his gun on him, and so he ended the fight permanently.

whiskeysour: What the hell do Japanese tv programs have to do with this? You can already get your American TV anyway.... you just need to pay for it! And you think Japan would lose 100's of thousands of viewers if American programs become available??? Dream on. With the prices you'd have to pay to get American programs, only a handful of people would switch.

chewitup: Thinking something, and going on a drunken rant in front of people you don't know or trust are 2 completely different things. Also, if Kumagai had some constructive criticism or ideas of improvements for the team, don't you think it would have been a better idea to take it up in a sober state of mind, with the team, as opposed to some strangers at a goukon party? And another thing, when one does become famous, it does not mean they have a free pass to make others look like sht. What Kumagai did (with the cooperation of this idiot student) is borderline slander. As if Kumagai doesn't have skeletons in the closet..... so what right does she have in bringing up others' when they are not present to defend themselves?

......I forgot to add: I doubt it though. It's more likely the girl is just stupid and gave her address to someone she met on-line with her cell phone.

johninnaha: Good point. I never thought of that.... in other words, he could have pretended to be someone totally different (like the bank, or some other institution) and tricked her into saying her address.

paulinusa: You've got a point. No doubt that what doesn't excite some people may excite others. The "who cares" was my personal opinion. In this case, the lewd photos are of zero use to me. The news alone is enough for me, but I guess some others may not feel the same.

Exactly. Twitter, Facebook.... the internet for that matter; changing life as we know it into something as useful as it is dangerous.

Chance of parole after 10 years is the standard for life sentence in Japan, as there is a standard number of years for chance of parole in most countries we know. It's basically the next worse sentence after the death penalty, and it's highly doubtful this guy will get out on parole after 10 like someone else already mentioned. Also nust note, that if one does not get out on parole after 10 years, the maximum possible time of imprisonment is forever (until death), as opposed to 20 or 30 years, so it works both ways.
20yrsjpnman: I don't understand why it would make a difference that Lindsay was "a beautiful young woman..." as you put it; she was a person who was killed and that is why Ichihashi should be put away for life period.

kchoze: I guess my point was that yes, laws are laws and must be followed no matter what, but some laws, whether they stem from religious reasons, or cultural/social reasons, can be very questionable. For example, many states in the US don't require motorcycle riders to wear a helmet. This is a law (or lack thereof) based probably on the American culture and their image of "freedom", but just makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Another example is swear words; they are banned in the general media in most western countries... why? Christianity. Now, you may be following every single law to a "T" where you live, but saying that "fair doesn't matter" seems a little ignorant to me. There are exceptions to every rule.

I hear what you're saying, but unfortunately, the "books of law" as you call them, are based on religion in every country. For example, many western countries such as Australia, the UK and the US are countries with laws based highly on Christian beliefs. Right or wrong, that's how history has affected every country in the world. Throughout past history, present, and the future, Religion has, does, and always will create wars and countries.
