Fadamor: I hear what you're saying, but it sounds pretty naive to me. You really think there's no way for judges to be influenced? You said it yourself; Supreme court judges cannot be fired by anyone, so that actually means they've got a free pass to do whatever they want, doesn't it? (including being secretly bribed or "influenced" by large sums of money, and/or political gain)

I have no idea how big Shepherds Bush Empire in London is, but more importantly, I had no idea these guys have a fan-base outside of Japan... especially somewhere outside of Asia.

Ban violence??? Nonsense! America and so many other countries were established based on one of the most violent, inhumane acts of violence ever..... war.
How can you ban games of fictitious violence, when the government is responsible for real war and death?
If violent video games/books/movies were banned, all kids would have to do is turn on the tv and watch the news for some violence... war in afgan? OBL got shot and people want to see the body? convenience store got robbed and someone was shot? Hey, they don't even need the news, kids can go look and touch daddy's shotgun/rifle/crossbow/handgun he uses for hunting/protection.

I'm not condoning this type of activity, but I gotta admit, it's pretty entertaining compared to the everyday hum-drum news in the crime section. And all you J-bashers accuse the Japanese of being "sheeple"...

As far as I know, company sponsored health in Japan is not common at all (I've never heard of it actually). I work full time for a Japanese company and don't have it, nor do other employees... but we have national health coverage, which is something everyone including temp. workers should have. And I always thought that nennkin (pension) in Japan was available to anyone who works (for over X amount of time) in Japan, based on how long they've contributed...

Absolutely agree tmarie, temp. workers know fully well what their signing up for when hired, and if they work through a temp. agency, then the agency should find them other work when they're not working for Toyota. Why does Toyota get all the negative comments when Honda and Nissan let all of their temps go? That's what happens when you're at the top I guess.

Newsman: Facts are not just facts. It depends on how they are presented, and you seem to have done a good job of presenting the facts if your goal is to praise the US Government.
Here is another way of presenting the exact same facts that you raise: Jaczko, chairman of the NRC which is an independent agency of the US Government, made a false claim. His recommendation erred on the side of caution, but caused unnecessary mass confusion world-wide and in Japan, and also inflicted major financial and emotional strain on Americans who fled Japan based on the recommendation. The NRC has publicly announced its mistake after a review of further evidence, 3 months after the fact. The political system has demonstrated it is vigorous enough to raise questions about his fitness for the job, but has done nothing about it (Charles Miller, a senior official at NRC is leading the review of US nuclear power plant safety).

Here's how I understood the article:
As he was driving along the curve, he drifted into the on-coming lane (as 81 yr olds do sometimes), then swerved back into his lane while braking (braking is an automatic reaction when people panic) but mistaking the gas pedal for the brakes, thus, speeding up and crashing.
OR
As he approached the curve (which curves to the left), he tried to slow down, mistook the gas pedal for the brakes, which would cause him more than likely to accelerate into the on-coming lane, panics, swerves back into his lane while braking again but still mistaking the gas pedal for the brakes, thus, speeding up and crashing.
Just my take though.

Smorkian, Sawada2, and AJHC78: You've made some good points. Although I'm not a fan personally and I think AKB and the like are crap, that's nothing personal against them or their fans, and I fully respect the fact that it goes both ways. I guess to me it just seems like there's no creativity coming from any of the girls personally... let's put it this way, if each one of them had more talent and individual creativity, they wouldn't need 40 or 50 of them.

...ok, so we know there's at least 600,000 perverted middle-aged men out there.
They also probably don't care if they're spending hard-earned money on CRAP.

I really feel sorry for those families that can't move away or out of the area due to job/financial constraints, because if I were anywhere even close to the vicinity of a suspected contaminated area, I'd move my family outa there. It's sad that it has to come to parents "measuring" their kids' radiation levels... BTW, that is what a dosimeter does, right??? I dunno.

BurakuminDes: Interesting idea you have there. Won't happen soon though because of sheer volume/demand and stubborn trucking industry not wanting to shift directions. As far as truck drivers in general, this is a problem I've seen that's not exclusive to Japan. There are many reckless, careless, ignorant truck drivers in North America as well who unfortunately cause many accidents. The thing is, they're going a lot faster on north american highways so the result is even more gruesome.

Actually, vinnyfay, I have to apologize, because I wrote that comment knowing that this is what they do in some cases here in Japan. I saw a quick clip on a preview commercial for a reality tv show where J-police were riding along side a bunch of bousouzoku hooligans, and actually snapping pictures of them. I didn't catch the show itself so I don't know what happened after wards, but I've heard that catching these guys is very rare because J-cops have to stop pursuing once a chase starts to get out of control to prevent injury to innocent bystanders. Also, bike gangs generally scatter and use smaller roads or paths to evade police when they really want to get away.
