Yes, but the Koreans don't go halfway across the world to butcher dogs either. Japan should hunt whales in its own backyard...if there were any left to hunt.

But im still reading this as it was a failsafe measure in case the fireworks didn't work, not that there were not actual fireworks.

So it seems that actual fireworks DID work, for people that were there, but they inserted a digital image for TV viewers, just in case. Am I getting this right?

I ended up watching it of a German station. I was so surprised at the lack of NBC's live coverage.

Well, when you have a population of 1.3 billion, you can afford to play with ratios and still come out on top of everyone else :P

No no, Chinese now account for half the population of the world. Funny how people just start to make up figures when it doesn't align with their China hate.

I thought it was very well done. Good for them.
Sure it may have entertained people with little taste, but from a critical point of view it wasn't stimulating at all. I saw it as a rather obvious attempt at nationalistic back-slapping (e.g. "lookie what we invented!").
Well thank YOU Mr. Critic

The only way I could see this making any sense is if you claimed the US investment and use of China's factories indirectly contributes to the pollution. I guess.

Dog doesnt taste all that bad...though it had the texture of lamb when I had it. But anyhow, if they wanna eat dog, let em eat dog. There just isn't the same stigma on eating dogs in some places. So what?

While I'm no fan of Beijing air, for heaven's sake it isnt THAT bad. If you can stand L.A., you can stand Beijing. The Average AQI (Air Quality Index) for Beijing fluctuates between 75-110 during the year. The AQI for L.A. today is 90.

China isn't Nazi Germany and this comparison is becoming tiresome. Fact is, the Chinese people themselves want this Olympics and are proud of it. Deny them, and you aren't helping them. Is it too hard for some of you to ee that if the Chinese people see the west turning their backs on them during their Olympics, it will only foment anti-western sentiment, and therefore make any message and attempt to "reform them" all the harder? This idea that Chinese people are in the mud waiting for the white man to lift them out of their oppression reeks of idealism and a disconnection from reality.

I dunno, it was typically Japanese brand. Besides, soy sauce is soy sauce more or less, no matter what it comes from. I've had it everywhere from China to Japan to Singapore and Malaysia. I've never noticed much of a difference, but maybe i just have underdeveloped taste buds =(
