The singer said the commercial is meant to make viewers feel like they can beat the summer heat.

No one can come up with a snarky comment from this line? I guess I'm the only one.

“My movies have always been well received here,”

I've never liked Sumo, and have never understood people's (especially foreigners) fascination with it.

Regardless, I think the whole thing is sadly ironic. Many, many Japanese have told me they like Sumo because it's "100% Japanese" (the same reason they give for liking Enka.) In the end it's rife with corruption. I wonder what that tells us.

I've always referred to myself as half since I was a kid (I'm not Japanese) and I've never had a problem with it. The Japanese are really good at taking innocent words and turning them into pejoratives, however.

And, before anybody starts - Australia is part of Asia.

I have no idea myself, but most of the Australians I've met have told me it's part of Oceania.

I've flown JAL for 14 years and have always like them. They're expensive, but service has always been excellent. Food, timeliness, etc. Beats flying on any US carrier.

According to the news report I just saw, the kid got up and she attacked him. It included her poking him with the tip of her umbrella. If I was the boy, I'd sue. A reprimand is one thing, but an outright attack like this is uncalled for.

Tom Cruise or not, if this is yet another movie full of car chases, guns and things blowing up I'll skip it. What's a movie these days, 1500 yen? That'll buy a lot of alcohol.

I'm not an executive so I can't say anything about money. However Ghosn pulled Nissan's fat out of the fire a few years ago and turned it into a profitable company. Perhaps the person who said "Get out" who like to run it themselves?

This is really a shame. I have several Japanese friends who are into trains, and they are extremely nice people; they would never cause trouble like this.

If some Densha Dork tells you to move or leave, tell them to F-off. Flannel shirts and velcro shoes aren't exactly intimidating. Besides you have every right to be there - more so than them, who are causing a disturbance.

I'm happy enough with the 3Gs, no need for the 4. If you can get through Jobs' "Reality Distortion Field", you'll realize you don't really need the latest and greatest. Those that do have to pay the price.

the_sheriff Call it reverse racism or whatever but I agree with the landlords. I woulnd't rent out an apartment to foreigners, either.

Racism is racism, really. I lived in a building full of Japanese college students once, and the noise level wasn't much better than a place full of foreigners.

If everything goes wrong for us here financially, given the closed nature of the Japanese financial and credit systems, we can simply leave the country without a word to anyone and the Japanese landlords can do nothing to our credit ratings like they can with Japanese citizens.

Yes, unfortunately I've heard stories of that many times. What's worse is sometimes they'll trash the apartment and then leave.

A few years ago I was looking for an apartment. I had to go to five different real estate agencies before finding a place. My Japanese friends were shocked, and even the agents were too when some land lords flat-out said "no foreigners" - some of them waiting until the last minute. Whether you can read the paperwork or not, some land lords just do not want you. Sad, but true.
