“People don’t understand the way our system operates; they just don’t get it,”

That's because it doesn't. If they visited or lived in the US they'd figure that out pretty quickly.

Wow - who'd have thought? The best way to learn a foreign language is to read something infantile, with cute pictures in. Kawaii!

You're welcome to make a "War and Peace" version. How much will you charge?

That may be true, but it is undeniable that the US government is treating Toyota differently than they would GM or Chrysler.

As much as I dislike Toyota, I have to agree. Everyone knows (yet few are willing to admit) that America loves a good witch hunt, and that is what this is turning into. That it's being done for political gains is even more despicable.

It couldn't be Cheney's heart; he doesn't have one.

I was going to say "guilt", but I agree with you

The airline decided to designate women-only lavatories based on a 2007 online survey in which 90% of the women polled said they think women-only lavatories are ‘‘attractive.’‘

Willcom rolled out the red carpet for eMobile and allowed them two years to take over the mobile broadband market. I switched over to eMobile last year and pay much less, have MUCH faster internet and got a good netbook for 100 yen.

Sorry, buy cry me a river, Willcom.

Entering the tracks is, I would guess, trespassing, so the man should be prosecuted. It's a shame that these rail fans are getting out of hand. They should be grateful that Japan is so nice to rail fans: take pictures of trains in the US and see what happens.

Smith raised a stink about the incident on his Twitter page Sunday, saying “I’m way fat ..."

He could have been an adult and contacted the company directly. Instead he chose the attention-getting route. If he's "way fat" maybe he should like, totally loose some weight.

... The pattern is all too familiar, typically involving slow initial response, minimizing the problem, foot dragging on the product recall, poor communication with the public about the problem and too little compassion and concern for consumers adversely affected by the product. In case after case companies have shortchanged their customers by shirking responsibility until the accumulated evidence forces belated disclosure and recognition of culpability. ...

Not to single you out, but you could say this about a lot of American companies as well

This is "service zangyou" - overtime as a free service to the company. Politicians have been promising to get rid of it for years, but it's as Japanese as sushi kimonos.

As much as I dislike Toyota, I would never buy an American car. A car that may need to be recalled vs some plastic piece of junk that will fall apart in a few years.

Is this really the worse thing that happened in Japan today or is this just what the media wants us to think?

It's a good day in Japan when this is the worst news out there. If you want depression and a loss in humanity, read the World section.

The parents will probably have to pay for the damage. The 15 year old boy would be 3rd year junior high. If this goes on his record he can say goodbye to getting into a good high school.

In the small town I used to live in you could barely fit on the buses during the day because they were filled to the brim with old people who would just ride it from one side of the town back to the other.

A few years ago I made the mistake of going to a hospital for my yearly health check (instead of a clinic.) There were elderly folks all over the place. I felt sorry for them though, as I was told many of them just want someone to talk to, so they use their insurance and hit up the doctors constantly.

At Hello Work I've seen tons of ads for care workers.
