While I wouldn't be caught dead with one of their CDs, I have to admit there are a few Johhny's tunes out there that I like. To me, the secret to tollerating them is to just listen to the music- don't look at their faces or outfits and for goodness sake don't watch them dance.

As for New Years .. I'm looking forward to the hatsuuri Lots of bargains to be found :) The shrines and temples are usually so full of people I think I'll avoid them this year.

I know many decent hard-working police officers in Japan and they do not lack motivation.

I had a police officer as a student a few years back. Funny guy; he was supposed to be a pretty good marksman. His most memorable quote: "I hate criminals."

I hate it when people clip their nails on the train. Yes, I've seen it. Some women put on makeup to get attention, so I just ignore them.

The absolute worst behavior I've seen is people spitting on the floor in buses and trains. I will not stand for that, no matter what country, and have called out several people for doing it.

Some Western manners are foreign to the Japanese. "Ladies first" is probably #1. I can't count how many women I've surprised by letting them go first ... and it's a great way to flatter them ;)

I've given my seat to elderly women on the train before, but the Japanese have that characteristic enryo (遠慮) so you have to ask 2 or 3 times or almost shove them into your seat. I've even been refused!

Was he the only one awake in the Koban at the time?

I'm surprised a cop was even there. 95% of the time when I walk by a koban it has that "we're on patrol" sign on the desk. Does that mean they're inside sleeping?

Also, AA is the only American airline to have never filed for bankrupcy. JAL should stick with a stable airline.

On the one hand I wouldn't mind if JAL partnered with Delta, seeing as how I wouldn't have to suffer on AA anymore. On the other, even though SkyTeam is the second largest alliance out there, it doesn't have a stellar list of characters. Perhaps JAL would be best to stick with OneWorld.

... Drunk guy puts hand on your thigh, slap him hard enough that he will remember it. ...

Some girls I talked to in the past spoke of poking roving hands with needles, which seemed to work :)

... I have problems understanding how the victims families can sit behind glass and watch him or someone die. How can a country even allow such an atrocity? I find that as shocking as what he did.

If one of the victims was a family member of mine, I would've seen him sent to the firing squad, or better yet a beheading. He showed no remorse, why should I spend my tax money to feed and house him in prison for the rest of his undeserved life?

That's just my opinion, however. I'm sure there are people out there who disagree with it.

I agree with him bowing ... but in the photo the combination bow/handshake looks quite awkward.

He shoulda marched right across the tatami in his cowboy boots, looked the Emperor straight in the eye and given him a good firm American, handshake, dammit.

Then said "HI BIG DADDY!" and given him a slap on the back.

Growing up in the imperial palace during war time must have been difficult, especially being the target of US bombs.

OT but, when was the imperial palace ever bombed?

Somewhat in the area is Inuyama Castle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inuyama_Castle It's made of wood, not concrete, and supposed to be quite nice, if a little small

He could also be referring to the Japan of days gone in which people worked hard and studied hard. Now the young people are frivilous, easily bored and uninterested in anything for more than 2 minutes.

If he thinks it's bad now, wait until the kids of today have their own kids- we haven't even begun to see the worst yet.
