At least New York has a death penalty. Although, if I were the defendant's legal advisor I'd try to get the trial moved out of the city or cite a biased jury. The U.S justice system is so full of holes I wouldn't be suprised if they got let off on a mistrial.

    TheQuestion

Are you a Republican by any chance?

As a matter of fact no, I'm not.

You took a statement concerning all bases across the country and respond that Fort Hood has low instances of violent crime?

That's kind of what it looks like.

You guys always pull this crap.

If by 'you guys' you mean Cuban/Irish men in the business field with an unhealthy love of fine pastry and tobacco products than...maybe?

    Illogical to the last.

Oh, but this is only the beginning! Mwa-ha-ha-ha!

Take Saudi Arabia, for example. The Saud family aligned itself with one of the most extreme strains of Islam (Wahabism), and the U.S. decided to align itself with a regime that is far away from American values as you can get.

Ah, but the Saudi's don't often openly challenge the U.S and tend to stay out of the way of U.S interests abroad. Smart little ducks keep their heads down and turn a neat profit.

Nearly a third of my high school class was Arabic/Moslem. (I was born in Detroit and graduated from one of Dearborn's high schools.)

Cool, so you know what I mean. Arabic people are, by and large, pretty cool and I never picked up any serious conflict. It was really starting to sound like you were under the impression that Americans had a long standing hatred toward's Arabic people, and that's just bull.

Is this José Miguel Domingo Fernández related to Domingo Fernández Navarrete the man that wrote Tratados historicos, politicos, ethicos, y religiosos de la monarchia de China? If so they are going to very disappointed that you failed to put the accent in the family name.

No relation, my Papa is a 76 year old retired chef living in New Port Richey.

What worries me more is that we might actually be related.

    I don't blame you.

So, what if these aliens do arrive and they turn out to be Jewish, will they have more right to be Catholic than the Catholics?

Quite possible, although if that situation should arise there are a few nuns that I know that would be happy to duke it out over the title of most pious being in the universe... and they'll win damnit.

Seems to be a lot of 'sins of the father' stuff going around. I'm catholic and don't ever recall burning any protestants, drowing any wiccans, or even making a concerted effort to convert any atheists. Although I do keep a spare set of 15th century duds around in the off chance my inquistionary sleeper cell gets activated, because as my grandfather José Miguel Domingo Fernandez always used to say, "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

There are aliens, but unfortunately for the Catholic Church, they're all Protestants.

Technically for them to be actual Protestants there would first had to have been an alien Catholic Church (ie an established institution to 'protest' against). In theory they could act as Protestants but as of Vatican 2 thats also kosher.

One that comes to mind is having more weapons floating around base, which will end incidents like this really fast but spark three times as many similar incidents

Historically speaking Fort Hood has always had a lot of firearms around and has had a low instance of violent crime. Especially considering that the vast majority of the personnel at the base are fine young men with families and who have taken up a great mantle of responsiblity.

You are making a tremendous amount of sense here. The cycle of violence that we are involved with did not begin with 9/11.

Are we talking about the U.S and terrorists, the rest of the world and the middle east, or the West and angry extreamists? Because, having lived in and around Detroit and Dearborn for most of my life, there has never been very much tenacity against the arabic people. Even today the incidences of violence and racial tension are pretty low when compared to what happened during the world wars.

It's a contract, pure and simple. If you renig the entire contract is void, back to square one, no realignment, no troops being moved anywhere. Additionally the U.S would be less likely to strike up another similar contract given a history of japan buggin out.

If I had done that my dad would have whooped my ass then have made me help rebuild it. No counciling, none of this understanding crap, just punishment and hard work. The human mind responds faster to negative stimulation than most psych stuff anyway, it may have turned me into an abrasive dickhead but at least I've never burned anything down or killed anyone.

    TheQuestion

Seeing a crucifix hanging on the wall certainly could bother students who are not Christian.

Wha? I worked at a deli in dearborn for a few months when I was in highschool and they had islamic stuff all over the place and it never bothered me, true it was a private work place, but arguing that a mere religious symbol could cause somebody sever discomfort is pure stupidity. If they can't accept the fact that somebody, somewhere in the world, has the audacity to believe diffently than them they probably don't have the social or mental capacity to be in a public school anyway.

Just as a point of fact to support my earlier belief that this was just for money and attention.

Lautsi, who is of Finnish origins, and her husband, Massimo Albertin, said they were satisfied.

Thats after the courts gave them money but refused to force the schools to remove the crucifixes. Apparently they don't care enough to force the matter, they're just happy to cut and run. It was never about seperation of church and state or even about their kid, just cash and a little limelight.

Same old story, attack the symbol merely to attack the symbol. It has nothing to do with Italian Mother fearing for the well being of her son, it's just a way to make money and cause a stir.

    TheQuestion

So, how many clubs over the head would you consider to be having one's life in danger?

I don't know how I can make this any clearer. If you believe your life is in danger you shoot to kill, thats it, cut and dry, clear as crystal. If you aren't willing to kill something with your shots than you should not fire them off.

    TheQuestion

What makes you so sure that the police officer in question didn't ask for a backup when he started chasing one of the accomplice or during which time he was being attacked by three men?

I'm just going by what the artical says, and there is no mention of a backup request at all.

What makes you so sure that the policeman was equipped with those?

You asked what options an officer in a 'civilized country' would have at their disposal. If their department didn't have the soundness of mind to equip their officers with what is considered basic equipment in other countries that really isn't my problem.

To me, it sounds like it would of been satisfactory if the policeman actually shot the assailants which I totally agree with. However, given the climate the police here are faced with which I alluded to earlier, I can see the justification behind shooting off warning shot to scare them off.

Unless the officer believed that his or anothers life was in present and immediate danger no I do not believe they should have been shot. You seem to be operating under the impression that if a bullet is not fired directly at someone it looses all lethality. The round has to go somewhere and if you don't know exactly where it's gone that's just irresponcible. Heck, even my nephews knows not to pull stupid stuff like that.

    TheQuestion

It's quite obvious you can't buy a clue because you have yet to offer an alternative method when being attacked by three men. But bear in mind that you have already stated that shooting the attacker was not an option for "Civilized countries".

Here's a few that the cops in my neck of the woods deploy; backup, pepper spray, tazer, stun gun. Firearms are deadly force only, between the ricochet and the environment a couple of, quite literally, aimless rounds can cause more harm than good.

    TheQuestion

As long as the smart grid doesn't have a problem with my prodigious consumption of energy for my pet projects I've got no problem with updating the system...especially if it means less brownouts.

Finally instead of hiding in the sand on energy the country is starting to invest in its future.

People always assume that everybody from the U.S has been totally ignorant of alternative fuel sources until it became popular. Geeze, I still remember when me, my dad, and uncle would ghetto rigging most of our yard equipment to run on straight alchohol and my first car used gasohol (and to a lesser extent E20 when it was available). The only reason I didn't buy one that runs on E85 was because they are charging way to much for essentially the same vehical with a slight modification to the fuel system. That'll probably be what I spend my next vacation on doing.

    TheQuestion

first of all, I am not saying anything about god or a god being a scam, but religion as in groups. They take your money, lay down some rules all ultimately try to achieve some crazy thing after you die!

The same could be said of any group set up for any purpose. I go to my church because I like the people there, I enjoy the sermons, and I find the ambience to be quite peaceful. And I don't know what congregations you've been to but nobody has ever held a gun to my head to add to the collection plate.

So, I purposely call myself a a borderline atheist! I'm sure I'll find everything out once I go.

I believe you qualify for agnosticism but far be it from me to clump you in with a larger group. To do that would be to marginalize you're personal world views that could be both offensive and small minded. And nobody wants that.

    TheQuestion

feel free to throw in some specifics that I can cross check

    http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorialopinion/oped/articles/2008/01/06/brrrwheredidglobalwarminggo/

my favorite part of that one goes "last month, more than 100 scientists signed a strongly worded open letter pointing out that climate change is a well-known natural phenomenon, and that adapting to it is far more sensible than attempting to prevent it."

I don't doubt that climate change is occuring, I simply don't believe that humans are the major driving factor behind it when there are so many more viable culprits. Like, I don't know, the sun, and the fact that its reaching the peak of one of its many solar cycles.

And in responce to the 'hockey stick' graph,

    http://www.technologyreview.com/energy/13830/page1/

Basically saying that the program they used to create the graph had an annoying little flaw that tossed out any data that did not match up with said hockey stick making it skewed to the tune of rapid and destructive climate change.

As for sea levels Stanford University found that sea levels were "expected to increase by 0.09 - 0.88 m. in the next century, mainly from melting glaciers and expanding seawater ." The large margin has to do with the inexact nature of predicting long term weather patterns, many scientists even go so far as to admit that they really don't know whats going to happen even 15 years down the road. We don't have the records or the means to accuratly predict anything in the long term.

I guess I'm just a hard guy to convince with my radical desire for concrete evidence that the general warming trend is man made and not part of a larger and longer climate cycle that the earth goes through whether we're here or not. And if it is man made...keep it up, maybe some day I won't have to wake up an extra 20 mins early to thaw out my car in the winter.
