Sure life was hell before, but the only thing that setting up in Afghanistan has achieved is more deaths

    GW,

To quote one of my favorite movies... "But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."

There is no charity here, and it should be taken as such. It is shame that the US attach conditions to food. You either give free food or do not try to get political and geopolitical victories through the hunger of NK population. I do, however, support the general stance of the US towards the NK problem.

Konsta, it appears you have a future as a politician! Nice ride on the fence...lol. Yes, US aid in all forms to NK has always been conditional, food or otherwise. Dealing with NK is like dealing with a child. When the child acts as requested, the child is rewarded. If the child misbehaves, the child is reprimanded.

That being said, I know many people feel that while the NK gov't deserves the punishment, the people do not. Unfortunately this is a catch-22. We can not continue to provide support to a gov't when we don't approve of the actions of that gov't and unfortunately the people are left to suffer at the hands of their governments actions...

    @Mirai

Ok, you got me, I went back and double checked my math and discovered my error. I obviously don't have your higher math skills, but please take the time to go back and check your math as it comes to just under $50,000 per person. But thank you for your mercy...

As for the rest, since I'm obviously so clueless, I won't bother to try to debate with you any further as I don't care for your condescending attitude. You obviously have the whole thing figured out, so please contact Congress and let them know you have all the answers to fix this mess since they haven't been able to pass a budget for the last 3 years. I look forward to your new cabinet position...

signal that the United States is a nation that holds its citizens collectively responsible for the health of the whole.

Thank you! My point exactly! The US is a nation that holds it's citizens collectively responsible, so everyone should pay their share. And yes, military spending is currently at an all-time high due to our expenditures in the Middle East theater of operations. However, as our troops are withdrawn over the next two years, we should see a significant drop in spending requirements...

Mirai...First you want to nitpick my very simplified example which I based on the statistics used in the article, then you want to re-utilize the same stat in your response? And YES, I do consider someone who has paid $150,000 in taxes to the rest of the country for the general good to have paid their FAIR SHARE!

Now you've skewed a lot of numbers to benefit your argument. I do fit into that $50-60K per year bracket by the way, and no, I don't pay $12.5K per year in taxes, less than half that, actually. But when it comes right down to it, if you're not happy with that $50K per year, then get off your butt and do something about it! Take the risk and start your own company, create some jobs and hire some Americans who are desperately in need of jobs. Then when you're making $1M a year, you can see how it feels to write that check for $150K each year and still have people crying you're not doing enough...

And I could care less about being a Republican or Democrat. As an American voter, I think the Amercian economy is probably the single biggest issue at the moment. And the fact of the matter is your 5% more on the richest isn't going to fix that problem. How can you expect 1-2% of a population to correct the debt of an entire nation?

I'll leave you with this one small fact to think about. If the current debt is $15T, and based upon the latest census we have over 311M people in the US, if we came together as a country and each person gave $50, we would totally eliminate the deficit...

You know, everyone likes to throw around these percentages and statistics to best further their cause or personal opinion, but I want you to think about something for a minute. If anyone who is making over $1,000,000 is paying 15% income tax, that is $150,000 per year in taxes. Now how can anyone stand up and say, "Hey, you're not paying your fair share!"?

Believe me, I'm not making anywhere near $1M a year, and I am a tax paying American and I pay my share. But how can people have the gaul to say people who have worked, risked, invested, and earned their way to the top now need to give it all away for the benefit of those who don't have the drive to earn their own way? We're on the path to a Socialist America boys and girls when people are giving $150K for every $1M they EARN and people are still crying that they don't give enough...

Justifiable homicides in Florida have tripled, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement data. Other states have seen similar increases, FBI statistics show.

I would rather see the headline you quoted above than "Wife Raped, Husband and Children Sodomized Before Being Slaughtered in Home". Justifiable homocide means you defended yourself when you felt your life was threatened.

I don't know what happened during the Martin case. There has been no trial, the investigation is still uncomplete. We may never actually know what happened. But this case is not a platform to justify trying to remove your God given right to defend yourself against an attacker.

Having said that, I don't believe the Stand Your Ground Law applies in this instance. Sounds like Zimmerman went looking for trouble and he found it. This type of scenario was not what the SYG Law was intended to cover...

Not a very sound business strategy to kill customers who don't pay

I disagree, hasn't this been the policy of organized crime for hundreds of years?!? Word gets around, see how long before another guy tries to skip out on a check in this bar... :p

    Oginome,

Nice to see to see Christians are still continuing their age old tradition of being homophobic bigots. How hypocritical, to preach love and forgiveness and then go around and start condemning and dehumanising people for being what they are

"A bigot is a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from their own". By definition, everyone is a bigot if they stand up for their beliefs.

The Christian faith believes homosexuality is wrong because the Bible teaches about the sin of homosexuality. Christians beleive in the Ten Commandments and lots of other teachings in the Bible. Do you expect them to ignore the teachings of the Bible about homosexuality just because homosexuality has become "En Vogue"?

How hypocritical, to preach love and forgiveness and then go around and start condemning and dehumanising people for being what they are.

Does this include Pedophiles? I mean really, who get's to decide? Meh, it's ok to follow some of the teachings of the Bible, but I want you to overlook this part because I don't believe the same as you...

Please excuse my ignorance because I'm not quite sure how this works. But if the gov't takes over the electric company, aren't there a couple of issues to address? I could see definite conflict of interest issues, gaining of a monopoly on utilities, etc. For example, the politicians say "We're running a bit low in the public coffers...let's raise the price of electricity". This would basically allow them to "raise taxes" without actually raising taxes...

In the States the gov't can regulate business, loan/grant money to businesses, but they don't own them...

Hmm so l guess seeing how its so peaceful you know with no war going on there and no fighting you may as well come home then. As l said maybe you should go talk to those fighting your non war and ask there opinions on the matter. Because l know for a fact they would have very different opinions about it, whether you call it a war, a conflict, a sanctioned action its all the same at the end of the day. Funnily enough though even your own government refers to this 'action' as part of the "war on terror" so you better go talk to your bosses as they seem confused too.

Believe me, I look forward to coming home, one more month. And as I said, I don't need to talk to anyone about the fighting, I AM ON MY THIRD DEPLOYMENT. I don't know what military you were in, but if you don't understand that phrase, I am currently serving in the Middle East theater. I can't say exactly where, but hopefully you get the point. And every military person knows that there is a difference between a war and a sanctioned action. There are different rules for both, and if you had truly spent any time in, you'd know the difference too...

Oh and for the record l dont know about you but when l joined the military l was aware of the risks and dangers involved in my chosen occupation. However as a civilian now l do not expect to be murdered in my house by a rampaging soldier

And I don't expect to be shot in the back by a person that I am currently placing my life on the line to defend...

Huh, so there is no war in Afghanistan? This is not a war zone? Im sorry but you need to go and have a chat to some of your military brothers and sisters working in Afghanistan l am sure they would love to hear you say they are not in a war zone. Im sorry but your comment here defies belief. The US, and coalition troops in Afghanistan while training and supporting the Afghans are still fighting a war. If you think otherwise you need to seriously talk to some returning troops.

No, there is no current declaration of war in the country of Afghanistan. No, Afghanistan is not a war zone, and no we are not at war with the Afghan military or people. We are in a Congressionally authorized military engagement against recognized terrorist groups. Whatever beliefs you have, then I guess this defies them, because it is a simple truth. And there is no need for me to talk to anyone about the conditions in Afghanistan. I'm currently on my third deployment...

I can walk down the street of my hometown, and of my adoptive country without fear of being robbed, mugged, molested, raped, beaten up. And the last person that was put to death using the death penalty in my country was in 1962, so we are doing well without it.

So where is this utopian country where crime no longer exists?

Tizalleyman, you are looking at this from a one-sided perspective (Financial burden to society) when most of the opponents of the death penalty look at it from several others (Morality, lack of effectiveness as a deterrent, the possible mistakes that can't be undone, its constitutionality and so on) .

My own personal belief is an eye for an eye. While many may not believe as I do, I believe that if you take a life, then you forfeit your own. My problem with capital punishment is your third point. I has been proven too many times that innocent people have ended up on death row. Whether it is due to a corrupt prosecutor or judge, lack of proper legal council, etc, it doesn't matter. If one innocent person is subject to death, then it doesn't work.

I'm not aware of any clause of the Constitution that says you should not die for your crimes. I know the penalty for treason has always been death, even in our founding father's day. I suppose it's a matter of interpretation, but I'd be happy to hear your viewpoint where it says you are allowed to murder/rape/etc and still be allowed to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Even when conceding my point, you still have to argue about life in prison and its cost to society. Where will you stop? What will satisfy you?

Since when did this become about me? We put people in prison because they can no longer be trusted to follow the rules of a society or because they pose a threat to others. I don't know what else you expect to hear. I suppose we will no longer need prison when we live in a Utopian society where you can walk down the street without fear of being robbed, mugged, molested, raped, beaten up, etc, etc, etc...

I'm sorry but you do realize that military personal join the military knowing the risks they are taking. There job is dangerous and in its raw for is basically kill or be killed when in a war zone. These men where in a war zone.

I'm sorry, but what I do know is you don't know a d*mn thing about the military. I have served for over 22 years and in no instance is it ok to turn a weapon on an allied troop unless you are defending your own life from attack. And, in case you haven't heard, we are NOT at war with the Afghanistan people, this is NOT a war zone. There is no war going on. The US personnel that are still in the Middle East are there in a supporting role to help the Afghan gov't until it is ready to assume is own role in protection.

The senseless slaughter of 17 people occurred at the hands of an apparent psycho that cracked. He has not been tried or convicted of his crimes yet, so I'll not condemn him. But mark these words...this was not an act of a soldier. This was the act of a criminal and a butcher. Do not lump my military brothers and sisters into the same category as a murderer...

So, yes, it is more expensive.

After doing a little more homework, I will concede your point, PeaceWarrior. According to www.deathpenalty.org, it cost $90,000 more per year to keep someone on death row. But I would still argue that even with a life in prison sentence, you are still going to have years and years of appeal processes, so there will be legal costs. If that person is convicted of life in prison at 21 years old and lives to be 65, that is almost $2M in prison cost alone. The cost is too high.

I guess I just have a problem paying $45,000 per year for a convict. There are many working class Americans who would be very happy to be a productive member of society with a job making $45,000 per year...

And NinjaDave...I'm not even going to waste time replying to snide comments like yours...

My problem with this is what is the definition of stalking? I mean, I have known many women who said they still play a little hard to get, to not make it to easy for a guy. So how is a guy supposed to know? I've often heard women say that persistence is an important aspect in a man. I know it may sound like a naive viewpoint, but seriously, if I ask a woman out and she says no thank you, and I ask her out a second time, am I a stalker?

    Tizalleyman

Why? There is a massive difference between what the US soldier did killing innocent women and children and this a military person killing another military person

Cletus...I assume you are merely trying to be argumentative and that you are not really as ignorant as this statement makes you seem. By your line of thinking, any military member of any country is fair game to kill them at will? What if the British decided to retaliate by killing a few Afghan military members, you'd be ok with that?

    Think before you type please...

Eliminate the death penalty. It's the moral thing to do and, in the end, it saves taxpayer money because you don't have to go through all of the lengthy appeals processes.

How in the world does this save taxpayer money? Eliminating the death penalty does not remove the appeal process. If you are found guilty of a crime, you are afforded the appeals process to the full extent of the law whether you are facing a prison sentence or the death penalty.

The death penalty saves taxpayers money. It costs the American taxpayers approximately $45,000 per year to house a prisoner in the US on average...
