China is wrong and should cease and desist. I wonder how much North Korea is whispering in the ear of the Chinese Leaders. Japan do not be deceived by the smoke screen of the Chinese, first it was smaller islands now it is Okinawa soon it will be Japan. Be strong, be prepared, and allow God to guide your steps, the world has realized that Christianity is growing in Japan.

Patrick, don't take China 'claim' seriously. This is just a joke to annoy Japan. Don't bring Christianity into the discussion. Japan is Shintoism and there are still remnants of superior race mentality ingrained in some of their leadership. This I suspect is reason why Japan is so hard to understand. They think they are superior people. Christianity don't have any of this self superiority complex and will never work in Japan. Look, Commodore Perry in Japan over 150 + years already, still a very resistant country to foreign religion!

We are not talking about China here. We all know there are brainwashing in China too, BUT in democratic Japan? This is a 'crime' on the national scale!

Why does it take so long to clear the air on WWII sex slavery commited by Imperial Japan? There is something very very wrong with Japanese style democracy. It is more like manipulated democracy than real democracy since it is run by LDP almost all these years!

Boy, you buy that half a loaf apology? If it is a real apology it is CLEAN, DIRECTED to the countries offended. Where are the names of the countries offended in the fake apology? Can't you see Abe administration apology is always cluttered like previous multiple insincere apologies otherwise why did China and S Korea spearhead the charges of insincere apologies?

Why don't Abe make a prime time TV announcement to show the world he really mean it and stop ADULTERATING his fake apology with other USELESS verbiage? Be PRECISE, that is what Japanese are good at, but here this is DELIBERATE attempt to muddle up the apology to make it superficial, not really meaning it!

Once done right, China and S Korea will have zero excuse to complain ever again and also the apology should INCLUDE not visiting the Yasukuni Shrine and not doctoring the textbooks as that will negate the 'official apology'

It took the threats from the US government, to put a fear in Abe to retract his nationalist plans. Irate Obama basically told Abe, if you ever rewrite history, it's not going to be good for Japan's relations with the US

That is what I thought! Korean president Park in Washington DC given standing ovation in Congress being a very good US ally. Japan? Just full of trouble, so POTUS Obama tell Abe, that's it! Come on board, be a team player or else!

Seriously since Japan keeps having this nationalist streak problem all these years, it is time for her to revise the school textbooks and stop brainwashing her citizens. Only then when they become adults they do not become so nationalists which is the reason why these politicans always have to appease them to win their votes, like putting a show visiting the Yasukuni Shrine, some praying for votes, some really hard core nationalists.

This really "made" my day. How absurd can a comment be? Tony, you really should go visit Okinawa (and also other parts of Japan for that matter) before you get to post nonsense about the people in the Japan

Okinawa was annexed by Japan. They are very different people until Japan assimilate them to the point you cannot notice the difference! In fact they have more Chinese culture in them before Japan annex them in the late 19th century. They are always treated as second class citizens in Japan. Even WWII their girls were sacrificed to kill themselves, tricked by the Japanese army to save themselves!

I know enough about Japan, being there twice, in the States and also in Taiwan, guess I know more than you!

Don't get me wrong. I am not the only person with a b/s detector that can sniff out the difference between a real apology and a half hearted apology. We all want to give it a rest, but why can't Abe come clean, really really clean? AND DON'T do the Yasukuni Shrine visit IN OFFICIAL GOVT CAPACITY to poison the atmosphere, otherwise the apologies will become insincere again!

Because the apologies are not sincere. Full stop.

Could this be because Chinese folks don't know the meaning of the word? You were probably a child when the first apologies were made and don't remember, and are only repeating (spouting off) trash that other people have fed to you.

I mean let's be for real, even if Abe kissed the Chinese president's arse on mainstreet and apologized no one would call it sincere.

You know he was trying to 'unapologize' so any apologize need be done really sincerely BY ABE HIMSELF IN PERSON leaving no doubt in anybody's mind. This is far better than 100 fake apologies. We have videos so if China complain, we can tell China to just shut up. Fair enough?

I repeat here for your convenience: Say something super clean like : ' I Abe, as PM of Japan would like to sincerely apologize to Korea & China and other Asian countries, namely Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand etc for all the atrocities committed by the Imperial Army before and during World War II. Full stop, see, that is not that hard to do and looks very sincere! Get Abe to do it clean and don't hide in the bush when he make an apology.

Also back up with school textbook revisions so future Japanese generation understand the meaning of a sincere apology!

Why do you think there are no demands for another apology from "Australia, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand etc" that you mentioned above?

Have those countries, perhaps, managed to accept the previous apologies and the fact that Japan has proven its sincerity to the entire international community with its actions over the past 70 years? Do you have another fantasy about why China throws a tantrum and tosses her toys out of the crib every time it suits her political goals? I guess I'm just a gluten for punishment and want the here your take on this. Or perhaps I just want a laugh before bedtime...

You have to ask them. I can only guess some countries were bought off with silence because they were very poor developing countries back then and Japan having developed faster in the sixties is able to invest in their countries and pay them off to silence their governments.

so what would constitute a REAL apology and humility? grovelling to china and korea? after having 2 nuclear bombs dropped on them and being occupied by the US, the japanese people have worked hard to rebuild the nation into a pillar of the international community. most of the japanese who participated in WWII are now dead. why should a generation that did nothing wrong apologize?

Do you not see the CLUTTER, the extra mumbo jumbo VERBIAGE in the 'apology'? A GENUINE apology don't try to 'hide in the bush'

Say something super clean like : ' I Abe, as PM of Japan would like to sincerely apologize to Korea & China and other Asian countries, namely Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand etc for all the atrocities committed by the Imperial Army before and during World War II. Full stop, see, that is not that hard to do and looks very sincere!

Virtuoso said it best: The apologies aimed at foreign countries will only be meaningful if they are also unambiguously conveyed in the Japanese media and included in the texts of educational materials. Not to do so would be two-faced in the extreme.

For the apology to be sincere it must come out FROM ABE'S MOUTH

    (Oops. Forgot the Quotes.)

You miss the fine nuance here. I am not seeking every apology from every Japanese PM. What make this case special is Abe drag out the attempt to revise the apology, so you can see there is already a plan afoot to 'unapologize'. Now the Korean president Park is in Washington DC given a standing ovation by US Congress for being a model US ally. Guess POTUS Obama tell Abe to be a team player, so he decided or was forced not to 'unapologize'!

But he cannot bring himself to REALLY apologize, so the apology given via his foreign minister to me looks like a watered down apology and worse, apology to who? To a person, a monkey or a country, which country? Why can't Japan come clean, really really clean?

When will we get Version 2 apology that is really really sincere with 'no bugs' to annoy us?

Thank you Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga and Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida for issuing these level-headed and empathetic statements on the part of the Japanese government and people of Japan.

I see this as a much-needed very constructive move toward more positive relations with Japan's neighbor

Do you think there is REAL apology being made? Also it is coincidental with Korean Park visiting Washington DC, perhaps POTUS Obama force Abe to 'get a life' and 'apologize' and learn to be a team player with Korea to contain China?

“The Abe government has expressed sincere condolences to all victims of the war, in and out of the country, and there is no change in that,” Suga told reporters. “We have repeatedly said we have no intention of making this a diplomatic and political issue, but I’m afraid this may not be fully understood.”

"...deep remorse and our heartfelt apology ... TO WHO?, to a Mr Nobody?"

INSINCERE apology! For the apology to be sincere it must come out FROM ABE'S MOUTH AND NAME THE COUNTRIES CLEARLY. He is the Prime Minister of Japan, why he haven't say so yet? Why hide behind his foreign minister remarks?

LH10May. 09, 2013 - 08:53AM JST it's so disappointing japan is looking the other way. THEY NEED TO ADMIT AND APPOLIGIZE.

    They already did in 1994.

"..then prime minister Tomiichi Murayama, stating "As Prime Minister of Japan, I thus extend anew my most sincere apologies and remorse to all the women who underwent immeasurable and painful experiences and suffered incurable physical and psychological wounds as comfort women."

Oh my. I takes a Communist party guy in Japan to force the issue to the open while all the other party members pretend nothing bad happen.

Man up, apologize some more. For each new comfort woman coerced, apologize in person. Show Japan is really civilize by apologizing in public again, Version 2 sounds better!

I KNOW WE HAVE OTHER MEANS TO DETECT SUBMARINE MOVEMENT AND WE DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THE WATER!! WITH THAT SAID I WON'T SAY MORE

Can't decipher what you say, could be China scrambling your post?, but guess what? China could deliberately emit submarine signatures to look like one of your buddy from US, Japan, Vietnam etc so you can try to detect and sink them but oops, they really are your 'friendly fire' submarines!

Just acknowledge China is not an easy opponent and show her a little respect. That will go a long way to prevent US from being embarrassed and the Hunter may become Hunted! That is why US have more sense than what you think about China's military strength and is starting to show her more respect. Just ask Kerry/Hagel !

Philippines, Thailand, Arab Spring, wow, this is going to shake the military balance to the core. If I am those countries I welcome the Pivot To Asia too, why not? Remember Suzy Wong? Those old days in Hong Kong, great for Hong Kong economy! Every time US vessels come along, they see Dollar Signs instead of ships!

Everybody welcome US presence in the Pacific Including Me, BUT Where, HOW CLOSE & How Many & Type of military assets, these need be finely tuned so as not to look offensive to China.

I am sure Okinawan don't welcome too many US bases there, will you if you are one of them knowing your island will be Target No. One in any war?

Those of you here are laughing at China and viewing their claim as nonsense are simply uninformed. China's claim on Okinawa is much stronger than Japan's. An even stronger claim, however, is for Okinawa's independence as a kingdom. No doubt the Sho family, who still live in Shuri, would be glad to step back into that role.

That said, the Okinawans voted to throw their lot in with Japan (though the Chinese might complain that the vote was invalid since return to Chinese tributary status was not on the ballot). That should be the end of the story.

The best source for an overview of Okinawa's history in English is George H. Kerr's Okinawa, the History of an Island People. One needs to read that before attempting to make meaningful comments on this issue.

Moondog, now you really let the cat out of the bag! Okinawans are now awakened and may want to reexamine their relationships with Japan. Okinawans are desperately looking for a 'lifesaver' and I must admit China had not being smart enough yet to cultivate their economic dependence away from Japan and more towards China.

All these time it seems Japan is just 'buying' Okinawa by sending them lots of money to keep them quiet. I wonder what happen if China is smarter by investing more there. She could use soft economic power to just 'buy' over the islands. I suspect Japan may erect roadblocks to make it harder for China to succeed, we'll see.

Tony actually believes china has superior weapons technology than U.S. china just put in service an old referbished carrier. China's navy isnt even a fraction of the size of the U.S. Navy. That why china tries to steal technology from U.S. and others.

Don't get me wrong. I just highlight a few toys China have to smack US if push come to shove. Overall and quantity wise of course US have superior firepower nobody doubts that but that will be MAD if it comes to that. On a limited warfare engagement US will be so bloodied she dare not even start a war with China. For this reason US is now more respectful of the Chinese military. In particular those surface ships from US navy is no more as frightening to China as before eg during 1996 when Clinton ordered the George Washington ( I think ) to the Taiwan Straits. Only the submarines may be of concern to China but still no guarantee US can beat stealthy diesel electric submarines from China which is harder to detect in the noisy heavily trafficked trade lanes there.

Such is their ever inflated sense of National worth, that I have no doubt they actually believe this is in Okinawa's best interest.

But if nothing else, it shows how imperialist they are. Have they bothered to ask the Okinawans I wonder?

Funny you couldn't figure it out. China was just waging a psychological warfare without any real basis to claim Okinawa since there is no historical evidence of ownership other than trade with her vassal state.

However Okinawans should wake up and decide for themselves their own future and stop being manipulated by Japan. Okinawa could follow the Taiwan model without being own by any country! I am shocked to learn Japan forbade them to express their own culture per viking68. What kind of democracy is that?

"Some Okinawans consider themselves independent of Japan. When the U.S. "returned" the islands to Japan, Japan forbade them from using their native language and changed a lot. The earlier Japanese military presence only subjugated the population."
