  Presumably the mother wanted to avoid the shame of friends and family finding out about an unwanted pregancy

  What the hell makes you presume that? There were two children found - of different ages.

  Some of the people posting here should search for information using keywords such as: postpartum depression maternal infanticide.

  These "burn in hell", "flog them into unconsciousness"(!) and "i don't give a crap" about her mental state comments are uninformed. Its well known that the balance of mind can be significantly disturbed in such cases. There are infanticide laws going back almost a hundred years to deal specifically with this (where the mother is responsible within 12 months of birth) in some countries.
