I really don’t think you quite get the idea of this site. It might be called “Japan Today” but that does not mean that Japanese people actually post comments here. Yes, it has been known to infrequently happen, but you will find that none of the above posters are Japanese. They are all from English speaking countries & one double post in particular is a figment of his own multi personality imagination. So you idea that some Japanese are bad mouthing the poor mis-understood Americans is wrong. As for somebody else suggesting that rockets are in some way cowardly, they are just mechanical delivery systems as apposed to the (deluded) human delivery systems the Taliban use. War means killing people, how this is done doesn´t all that important.

Palin is seen as “the telegenic and plainspoken”?
I suppose the same could be said about Donald Duck & Mickey Mouse, but who would vote them into the White house?
What the hell, the Americans have voted worse comic characters than either in before now. How about Mr.McGoo? Now there’s a man who could really see his way to solving Americas problems.

“where thousands of American troops have deployed in a massive operation to oust Taliban fighters from the country’s opium poppy region,”
First they went for the Iraqi oil & now the US government is trying to cut out the Afghan middle men in the opium trade.

When you produce a product that appeals to the lowest common denominator then you are producing rubbish.
She hasn’t been chosen for how good she is but for how much political leverage she represents & after Bush getting a second term with his performance record it would suggest that the American people are not the brightest in the world, so maybe it will al work out just fine for Obama the saviour & his chosen one.

The Cheney bush team might well be a couple law breaking rats & maybe the invasion of Iraq was a pure money making scheme, but at least half of what they were about was trying to stop any more buildings in the US getting demolished by crazed muslims. Yeah, so they went a little over the top, well do you expect, they’re Americans & Americans are always over the top about everything. No, I don’t know much about it, but then there isn’t anything except US news to comment on so I thought I’d jump in with an opinion. Like for example you lot may be voters but what do you really know about what is going on behind closed doors in the US, most of you don’t even live in the country, fine Americans you are. You are all experts but have no idea what information Langley might have that you cannot even begin to guess at. So Cheney might have broken the law, so what? If it rid the world of a few extra muslim crazies that can’t be bad. Fine so a few innocents might have got squashed in the rush, that’s live, there’s always a price & it is better that a few of their innocents got hurt rather than a lot of yours. Cheney is a bit like the bad guy in the Batman films, everybody hates him but get things done, even if you don’t agree with those things. Only given that there is no Batman to deal with the bad guy he is going to get away with whatever he has done. So live with it, for Cheney it is all over, he isn’t coming back so he doesn’t need to make any effort to keep anybody happy.

Drinking water? What a disgusting thing to do, wash in it yes, but drink the stuff? Never.
By the way, 356 ( minus 2 ) out of 2500, now that’s not what I would call democracy.

There are more than enough serious matters to argue about without this. I make no judgement on Michael Jackson, but Jackson Lee’s resolution is simply trouble making for the sake of trouble making.

Flogging is too good for spammers, 20 years, 12 hours a day, 7 days a week de-infecting other peoples computers would do just fine by me. In the last 10 years I have, thankfully, only had to do it twice, but that is more than enough to know how horrible a job it is.

There is no contradiction in this, I do agree with almost all you say. What I was reacting to was the extreme, almost bitter comments posted earlier. I spent ten years living with someone who was incredibly ill, I did everything humanly possible to stop her killing herself. Yes, I failed, eventually she did manage it. Given time and distance from that I now cannot be sure that all I did was the right thing to have done. I cannot even be sure that keeping her alive wasn’t cruel & selfish of me. That is rubbish of course, but we see with both intellect and emotion, and after ten years in a little world that had it’s own strange rules it’s hard to say now what was and wasn’t right. I know all the battles I went through, night after night after night. I know all the professionals that were so NOT helpful. You would believe that in Europe and the US we have all the support services, at least until you come to use them, then you find that politics and dogma dictate and getting help that actually amounts to help is almost impossible. And even in Europe families hide their sick children, or if they can, hide from their sick children, if there is somebody else to take on the responsibility. Sorry my lost war on mental illness makes me angry with fools like many above that have no idea of what they are talking about and condemn a lady that is just as dead as her child. The same illness killed them both and they need our respect and understanding. Not what is written by the ignorant above.

There seems to be a duality of thinking here that reasons that Kim Jong Il is both a spoilt lunatic child while also being intelligent enough to know not to go too far with his threats. He is either the mad “Elvis” or the devious blackmailer. I don’t for a moment doubt that he is quite mad, which isn’t too surprising given that he has been surrounded by “yes-men” all his life that are too frightened to tell him anything he wouldn’t want to hear. Which might also go part way to explaining his lack of dress sense. Is this laughable image enough that we shouldn’t feel a degree of fear as to what he is potentially capable of doing? It would be easy to reason that his hothouse isolation leaves him with no real idea of the world. I wonder how many here would feel confident enough given the opportunity to walk up him and tell him how deranged his thinking is? I wouldn’t like that job.
Part of the reason Iraq was so easily set up to be invaded was because Sadam Hussein had claimed to have or want to have weapons of mass destruction, when he later said this wasn’t true it was too late for anybody to believe him. Kim Jong Il however does have nuclear weapons and is close to having the means to mount those weapons on rockets. But because of the legacy of Iraq some now have the fear to move too soon and make the same mistake. We now have the wait and see people, once (or more) burned, twice shy. In the meantime those nuclear weapons are getting smaller in size & bigger in bang, those rockets are flying greater distances and will in time carry those nice little nuclear weapons. At which point it will all be too late for some city (cities), is that what it will take for people to stop taking this madman as a comic?

All we know from this story is from the point at which the child was killed. What led up to this, what was the woman like, the husband like, was the baby well or not, where do the respective families live? We have nothing except the presumption that the mother killed own child, very likely but by no means guaranteed. The family could be from elsewhere in Japan, no close by family & friends. The husband could have started an affaire while the woman was pregnant & is now unwilling to end it, the child could have been disabled. Add anything else you can think of because we don’t know. We certainly don’t know enough to damn this poor woman to hell or disgustingly talk of urinating on her grave. To kill a child is wrong, yes, but we need to give understanding to a distressed person lost in their own damaged world. Maybe you have never been so emotionally lost, maybe nobody you know has ever been so lost, then you are so lucky, too lucky to stand in judgement on others. What happened here is just incredible sad. If this had been Europe or the US we could reason that the state had failed her, but it isn’t, it’s Japan. Their culture is part of the reason most of you live in the country, sorry, but nothing in life is perfect, you will just have to accept that there are things about Japan you will never learn to like. Find the balance & live with it, they are not going to change to suit you (or me).

I wonder if the Emperor & Empress were actually asked which of the two places THEY thought was best to go to? Somehow I doubt it. This is one of those organised by numbers tours that all royalty seem to do.

“Native Hawaiians actually like Japanese tourists better than mainland tourists.”
That might be because Native Hawaiians class “mainlanders” as occupiers who invaded their islands & whom they cannot get rid off. Which if you think about it is true.

Any computer nerds out there that would like to offer an opinion on whether it would be possible using a portable computer on board the plane to mess up the flight computer & bring down a plane? I’m no techi so wouldn’t like to blindly guess, but I do know mobiles are bad news when used on a plane because the mobile signal messes up the planes guidance.
Just an idea, so don't jump on my head.

Are you seriously saying that you accept what happened because the recession is driving people to do criminal acts & the police will knock them about if they are caught? Don’t you think that perhaps you are getting things the wrong way round here? A woman & 3 children died. Bad times & bad police don’t excuse that.

You do realise that wikipedia is written for the people by the people & anyone with half a mind to do so can write what they believe a particular history was? Maybe I should go to wikipedia and re-write the whole history of the second world war so that is suits me. I could have it that the Russians broke a peace treaty with Japan so as to get their hands on as much Japanese land as possible before the surrender was declared, because what should have happened was that no land taken after August 15th. 1945 should have been covered by the San Francisco treaty & no Russia hadn’t taken those islands by that date, even if wikipedia says otherwise. As for the Ainu, they can have all “their lands” back when the North American Indians get New York back. Well it does cut both ways, if you push it that far.

Who ever agreed the release of al-Khazali needed to stop & think what went through the minds of those four soldiers during the short time they were kidnapped before being murdered. It is hard to imagine the fear that they would have felt. Religion, politics, nationality all have nothing to do with it. This man al-Khazali has no right to be alive never mind free.
All western troops need to be pulled out of Iraq & the country should be allowed to go it’s own way. Let them kill each other which seems to be what they are happiest doing, maybe it is a part of their “culture” & who are we to judge an other mans culture?
