The primary reason for having a gun (and for hoping a lot of your fellow citizens are also carrying one) is as a deterrent. Once you start to get a significant proportion of gun-owners in a state or location, even criminals can do the math and move to somewhere safer.
If you want to mug someone, you would rather do it in NY or California than in Florida or Texas because in the latter two states there is a significant chance that your victim will be armed and, since every state that issues concealed carry permits requires training courses for thoes holding permits, will know how to use his weapon.

This guy is a deadbeat. The landlord had every right to get rid of him. The landlord should be forced to let him live in their place for free?
Be responsible, work hard, pay your bills & debts when due, don't sponge off the hard work of others.

I'm with the 80%. At least the capitally punished have a very low recidivissm rate.
And, tkoind2, if the risk of executing an innocent should morally outweight any perceived benefit of executing people, shouldn't the risk of imprisoning an innocent should morally outweight any perceived benefit of imprisoning people?

This guy just missed the joys of living in a murderous dictatorship. They should have sentenced him to life in North korea, not 3 years in Iraqi gaol, where he will have to emerge into a free society and be reminded of Bush every time he gets to vote, or freely express his opinion or not have his wife/daughter/sister snatched off the street by Uday or Qusay.

You would have to be nuts to work for AIG now. If you did a great job and reduced their loss (and the taxpayers' loss) from $166 billion to $165 billion, not only do the politicians think you should not be rewarded, but that senile buffoon, Grassley, thinks you should kill yourself.
There's $1.6 trillion of liabilities still on AIG's books. If they are not properly handled, they will turn into $1.6 trillion of losses - 10 times the current loss. If compensation policies are handled by politicians by soundbites, the good people will leave and the incompetents (not a small group at AIG) will be left to deal with the liablities.

Here's the mail:
Date: March 17, 2009
This is to inform the American community that the U.S. Embassy has recommended that the embassy community avoid frequenting Roppongi bars and clubs in Tokyo due to a significant increase in reported drink-spiking incidents. American citizens may choose to avoid frequenting drinking establishments in this area as well.
The number of reports of U.S. citizens being drugged in bars has increased significantly in recent weeks. Typically, the victim unknowingly drinks a beverage that has been secretly mixed with a drug that renders the victim unconscious for several hours, during which time large sums of money are charged to the victim’s credit card or the card is stolen outright. Victims sometimes regain consciousness in the bar or club, while at other times the victim awakens on the street.
Because this type of crime is already widespread in Roppongi bars and is on the rise, the U.S. Embassy has recommended that members of the embassy community avoid frequenting drinking establishments in this area. American citizens may consider this recommendation as it applies to their own behavior. If you, nevertheless, choose to participate in Roppongi night life, we urge you to remain extra vigilant of your surroundings and maintain a high level of situational awareness. Establishments in the area of Roppongi Intersection (Roppongi Dori and Gaienhigashi-dori) have had the highest level of reported incidents.
For further information please consult the Country Specific Information Sheet for Japan, available via the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. U.S. citizens living or traveling abroad are encouraged to register with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate through the State Department's travel registration web site at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/ so that they can obtain updated information on travel and security. Americans without Internet access may register in person with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the embassy or consulate to contact them in case of emergency.
U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. For additional information, please refer to "A Safe Trip Abroad" found at http://travel.state.gov.
For further information or any emergencies involving American citizens, please contact the American Citizens Services (ACS) Unit of either the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo or one of the U.S. Consulates in Japan listed below:

The reason why healthcare is so expensive is that doctors have to pay up to half their income in malpractice insurance premiums. The trial lawyers who get the insurance payouts make contributions to Democrats. The Democrats resist tort reform. It's a US version of a Japanese iron triangle.

Free speech is the base on which all democratic societies must be built. We should only restrict incitement to violence, and even then only in circumstances where such incitement creates a clear and immediate danger of harm to life or property.
As for the ignorant little scumbags who want to deny the Holocaust, bring them out into the open where they can be exposed to general public revulsion and disgust. Let them say whatever they want. Trying to shut them down ives credence to their lies and claims of conspiracy. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
