So, now there are 5 accusations.

False accusations of sexual harrasment are pretty easy to make (and it's usually easier just to settle rather than to fight them)... but 5?

Things aren't looking good for Herman at this point.

Oh good grief, this is ridiculous, these two women should be identified and then Cain should sue them and their lawyers for causing all this trouble.

I don't think you understand how this whole legal thing works. These are not new charges. They are charges which have already been settled.

I'm curious, WilliB, as to what you think western policy toward the Islamic word should be? Should we go back to propping up dictators?

    ReformedBasher,

Yeah, I'm not sure I would characterize it as anything but a "straight out land grab." The missives from the Khan caused quite a dilema in Kamakura. Under no circumstances were they willing to say "yes," but they didn't dare say "no," either. So they simply said nothing, which bought them a few years to build fortifications and man garisons in Kyushu.

As T_rexmaxytime says, the Kamikaze didn't just show up an wipe the Mongols out. Rather, there was extended fighting in which the Japanese defenders managed to push the invaders back to their ships. This happened twice. Kublai Khan died before he could mount a 3rd invasion, but Japan could never be sure another wouldn't occur. The Kamakura Bakufu actually bankrupted itself trying to maintain the barricades and pay off the samurai manning them. It lead directly to the fall of the Shogunate.

sfjp330 asked a question because he/she wants to know more about history. Anyone wanting to learn more gets full support from me. It's a pity you have to be so rude about it.

Sorry. Didn't mean to be rude. I was just surprised, that's all. "Kamikaze" are pretty famous around these parts.

As for learning more about history, I answered his question. The first part of it, anyway. As to the question of "why did they invade?" Well... that was kinda the Mongol's "thing" as it were. There were some diplomatic disputes about respects to be paid to the Yuan emperor - basically the Mongols demanded Japan make itself a vassal state and remit tribute, and Kamakura responded by stonewalling for several years. Kublai Kahn was not pleased with that, thus the invasions.

"Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss." Or maybe worse....

Really? I mean, really? The new Libyan gov't - which doesn't even exist yet - is just as bad or worse than the dude with the death squads and the secret police network?

People need to calm down a bit. The Libyan gov't will make "Sharia law would be the “basic source” of legislation." OK, but we don't really know what that means yet, beyond polygamy and a cap on interest. Notice that last one: to my knowledge, the Koran bans interest all together. People are freaking out because they think they know what "Sharia" is, but this shows you it is all in the interpretation. Lybia is a Muslim country, and while it may not be ideal, it is not at all surprising that its laws will have an Islamic influence. That doesn't automatically translate into stonings for adultery and execution of homosexuals. Save the hysterical doom-and-gloom analyses at least until we can see what sort of government comes out of the transition.

The supreme irony here is that she undoubtably had to deal with years of "incontinence incidents" when Hiroshi was a small child... and she never once managed to beat him to death.

    WilliB,

Facts can be true or false. If someone thinks Zichi is incorrect, it would behoove them to post a correction rather than just hit thumbs down.

Why are we marking Zichi down for stating facts again?

NATO will continue to monitor the no-fly zone for a couple of more weeks.

is hardly an opinion statement or a value judgement...

Perhaps we just don't like facts here at JT.

Hrmmm. I may be on to something here...

    Smith,

While I don't condone parading his corpse around, it's important that people are able to see he is dead. Ghadafi is like the boogieman at this point, people need to see it to believe it - that's why those videos of him captured/dead were so important.

I think, too, we need to be less critical. Transitions like this take time - a lot of time - and there will be continued ugliness for a while as things get sorted out. To imagine that Lybia is going to go from a dictatorship to a perfect liberal democracy in the blink of an eye is foolish.

    DentShop,

Ghadafi is gone. Somebody has to be in charge.
