    "warned"?!

Why not "fired" and "convicted of assault and battery"?!

"Forgetting History" has been priority #1 for Japan since the moment the bombs dropped.

Sorry, Yuri. I love Japan, but Japan is in clearly the wrong on this one.

He'll get into some trouble. It'll be a story they can share later on though. They'll be laughing about it.

More likely he'll lose custody and won't get to see his daughter. And nobody will be laughing.

Here's the thing: there is nothing inherently wrong with dating outside your age group. Indeed, for most of history older man - younger woman has been the most common pairing. The problem is this: the greater the age difference, the greater the chance of complications. Most relationships where age difference is extreme don't work out in some way or another. Some do, but most don't. Thus the notion that there is something "unhealthy" about such relationships and general attempts to discourage them.

I would even go a step farther and say there is nothing inherently wrong about dating someone under the age of adulthood. (I know that will draw stiff disagreement from most posters, but hear me out...) "Age of Adulthood" is an arbitarary concept (as evidenced by different standards in different communities. 18 vs 20, frex). Furthermore, people mature mentally (and physically for that matter) at different rates. Most 15-17 year olds are physically ready for sex. I would argue that most 15-17 year olds are not emotionally ready for serious relationships with adults. Add to this the fact that these sort of relationships are highly likely to be of the manipulative, predatory variety due to the imbalance of power between the older, more experienced and mature adult and the underage partner, and you will quickly understand why we have age-of-consent and statutory rape laws. (These laws leave much to be desired, but there is a real need for them.) So, while it is entirely possible that at 44 you will find your true love in a 17 year old and live happily ever after, it is highly improbable.

Seen in this light, it is unsurprising that: massive age differance + underage partner = undesirable result.

I'm just taking issue with this idea that a person would prefer to lose a finger than a penis. While I'd prefer not to lose any bits, I think the loss of a finger would be pretty devastating.

Ok. But why are you taking issue? I wouldn't presume to question the value of a breast or uterus to a female. I would have no basis of comparison.

Israel obviously is the bigger fool.

I'm inclined to agree, but for different reasons. This move was a rather obvious ploy to boost Hamas inorder to undermine Fatah and prevent Palestinian unity.

    To extend that idea,

I would be far more sympathetic to her case if she had killed him. Not because living with out a penis is worse than dying (I'm pretty sure it isn't), but that if she had done so she could have reasonably argued she was protecting herself against future abuse. By cutting off his penis it is clear her major goal was to cause pain and suffering, to pay him back for his physical and emotional abuse. I can sympathize, but I can't support such a position.

    LFRAgain,

without at the very least accepting that the man possesses some culpability for his part in this drama

Where is anyone saying this, exactly? No-one here appears to dispute the guy is a horrible person that deserves punishement. What a lot of people are saying is that he doesn't deserve mutilation. Because no one does. Ever. Period.

It's a principle. "Penis" may be a hot button issue for a lot of male posters, but it really doesn't matter in the larger picture. I woudn't condone the lost of a finger, hand, earlobe, anything. I woudn't condone scarification, branding, or similar. I would be more likely to support state sanctioned capital punishment than any sort or state sanctioned corporal punishment, no matter how mild. You just don't get to do that.

The only way castration even begins to make sense is in the case of rape, where we can concieve of the "penis as a weapon." But even there I cannot support it.

No mutilation under any circumstances. Bodily integrity should be a basic human right (just one of the reasons why I am staunchly opposed to the abomination that is FGM and think the world has a duty to stamp it out.)

This is really sick but it is not only a CHINESE problem! A few ago in Boston?? Some crappy place in the USA an old man got hit by a car and about 10 people just passed by and some even to VIDEOS on their cellphones but NO ONE was nice or intelligent enough to call 911! It is all on Youtube if you do not believe me, so we can scream and yell about the Chinese but sorry dear moderator, it happens in many, many countries so DO NOT DELETE THIS because IT IS NOT OFF TOPIC. All humans need to really reflect on their own actions. Are we really behaving as HUMANS?? Are we worse than apes? I am so sad for this little girl out there in China.

Boston is actually a very nice city; But that is just the point - this can and does happen everywhere. There is an odd pyschological phenomenon known as the bystander effect - the more witnesses there are to tragedies like this, the less likely anyone is to help. I don't know why. It's breathtakingly sad.
