National Police dignity should be maintained at any cost

What does this even mean? I'm sorry but I my top concen is that my police be effective. If Bill Bratton can help them do that, then nuts to their "dignity." They sound insular and petty, bristling that way at the thought of an "outsider" coming in. Nothing dignified about that at all.

Triumvere; I haven't herad the attire defence for decades in the UK at least. Have heard about in Japan, but not the US surely. I know some defence will tryhard to find anything they consider sleazy about a womans character though.

As progressive as the UK is, I would be surprised if this line of thinking was erradicated; it may not play as well with the courts as it used to, but it seems to show up pretty much anywhere in the world you go, and may serve to intimidate a victim or sway a juror. Ironically, it is often women who are pushing it - there is a sort of unconcious calculus that says: "If she was raped, that must be because she was a "bad" girl. I'm a good girl, so therefore this could never happen to me; I'm safe."

As to the slutwalk itself - I really don't know what to think about it. I'm not sure if it effective, ineffective or even detrimental as a strategy to fight rape and rape apology, Mostly, I'm thinking: "I'm not a woman, nor have I been raped. It's not my place to tell these women what they should or should not do."

People tend to forget or not understand that rape is about power and control

This is certainly true. But it is also true that rape is about sex as well. There are commonalities, but we need to be honest about the fact that there are different sorts of rape and different kinds of rapists.

A man is unlikely to attack a woman due to her attire.

That's not really the point. The point is that a woman's attire is often used against her, post-rape, to damage her credibility, dismiss her trauma, and to excuse her rapist.

I've heard this man speak, and he was amazing. We are used to reading this sort of "us vs. them" narrative regarding immigrants, especially when those immigrants are South Asian/Middle Eastern/North African and Muslim. There is something fundamentally Britsh about him; something which stands in stark contrast to the rioters.

Looks like Orwell's "1984" is coming to life, and all because of a bunch of hooligans. I say shoot any and all violent rioters and let God sort them out.

    Hrmmm.

It looks more like Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" coming to life. In that book, nihilistic youth gangs speaking a language called "nadsat" (which means "teen" in Russian) terrorized UK society.

I'm going to go with Lord of the Flies.

We are talking about the #1 economy in the world, sitting a long gap away from #2. Do you really expect the world to just drop the US or ignore that kind of economic power? Or for that matter to forget that much of the buying going on world wide is done in the US?

    Interesting marketing strategy:

    Interestingly, the "rioters" and "looters" seem to be distincly seperate factions;

The guys burning police cars are angry young men. The guys looting shops and hauling away TVs are considerably older. They appear to have taken the crumbling of police control as an opportunity for profit.

Really coming down to the wire here. Hopefully now congress understands it has to make a compromise. I am afraid that the damage already (partially) been done; international investors (read China) have lost confidence in US treasuries, and even a compromise may not save our AAA rating. (...and the specter of default still looms...)

My economics 101 teacher told us you can't borrow your way out of debt. She must have been wrong.

What did your economics teacher tell you happens when the country with world's biggest economy defaults on it's debts?

The senate is willing to compromise, but the house seems to be hell bent on destroying the nation. I can't believe this is happening. Please, please, please come to your senses before it's too late.

It's so nice that people here haven't lost sight of what this tragedy is really about - not ~90 people, most of them kids, being masacred by a madman, but rather scoring political points against the "other side." Naturally. Glad to see we have our priorities straight.

I have yet to meet an apologist for Islam who can explain why the areas where it has remained 'pure', such as in Afghanistan and of course in Saudi Arabia, are also the most barbaric.

... only Islam in Saudi isn't "pure" - it's been completely corrupted by Wahhabism (the worst branch of Salafism)... which is, incidently, the same noxious brand of Islam which underpins AQ and a lot of other militant Islamist groups. They are "fundamentalists," and as with all other religions, fundamentalists are always dagerous nut-jobs.
