It's the old lesson: Play with fire and you are bound to get burned.

(Elements of) the Pakistani gov't believe that supporting radical islamist movements will give them leverage against India and the United States. But you can't encourage terrorism and insurgency on your borders without destablizing your own territory. These "investments" have been comming to around to bite Pakistan in the rear for some time now, yet the ISI continues investing. It's not clear, at this point, if they have any control at all.

Did that guy give his permission to have his photo taken? I'd hate to be him and has his wife see this picture. She might get angry that he's oogling some teenager (even though he appears to be looking at the dude)

I doubt she'd have a problem with it. The expression on his face says, rather clearly, "Kids these days...!"

Absurd exaggeration must have a different cultural interpretation in NK; they think it makes them sound tough... everyone else thinks it makes them sound ridiculous.

Interesting to see what, if anything, will be the world reaction to this as compared to the Chile drama.

China had its own stunning mine rescue earlier this year, when 115 miners were pulled from a flooded mine in the northern province of Shanxi after more than a week underground. The miners survived by eating sawdust, tree bark, paper and even coal. Some strapped themselves to the walls of the shafts with their belts to avoid drowning while they slept.

I mean, this sounds increadible, but I never heard anything about it.

Days after Israel ended its two-decade occupation of south Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah’s leader gave a victory speech here in which he said Israel is “weaker than a spider’s web”—a phrase that adorns a wall of the stadium along with photographs of weeping Israeli soldiers.

A society that builds monuments to denigrate it's enemies, rather than to celibrate it's own achievements, is a society that is fundimentally ill.

They are already on the battlefield, Love. They've always been there. They just weren't allowed to admit that they were gay. You wouldn't have been able to tell the difference if you met one.

    Just wait and see...

And here is betting you are wrong. As you say, just wait and see.

This judge has no standing to issue such an order. Our military does not answer to civilian courts.

You really have no idea what you are talking about.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the phenominon doesn't exist. Rather that a lot of people jump on it as being the reason behind any and all homophobia, when I don't believe that is the case. I think the "ick factor" (as it's called), religious belief, social conformity pressure, targeting of opportunity, and "honor cultures" all have roles to play as well.

The "unsecure in his masculinity" theory is appealing becasue of its counterintuitive nature (people always love that sort of explainaiton, as it gives them a feeling of possessin knowledge that others do not). Also, there is a bit of an alterior reason for making the accusation: in doing so, you imply that the homophobe is, in some degree, secretly gay, which damages their public masculinity; if that display of masculinity is an important part of their self worth (which presumably it is, if they are attacking gays) then the insult is very effective - whether you actually believe the charge or not.

My wife studied is a sociologist and studied the whole lesbian, gay, bi/transgendered thing and makes a valid point. The guys that so vehemently anti-homosexual are often that way due to some inward psychological issue/problem/misgivings with there own sexuality and view of manhood that seemingly makes them angry. Why else would anyone care?

Eh. I think the idea that anyone who hates gays must be, to some degree, a closet case, or otherwise "not comfortable with their sexuality" is highly overplayed.

Really, all you need is an outlook that measures self worth by a standard of "manliness" defined as displays "macho" activity. If this is your worldview, then gays are to be dispised and beating them up is virtous: in doing so you prove your own manliness, where as failing to do so makes you seem weak and unmanly. This is why using "gay" as an epithet is so potent an insult for so many.

You never hear about anti-straight beatings, only anti-gay beatings.

And just how many people, do you imagine, are out there getting beat up on account of being straight?

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought "why didn't they send in their own SF?!?!".

This has been explained, actually. British forces were not active in the region, so it was felt that US forces, having greater familiarity with the area and the opposition, would be in a better position to carry out the mission.

America is the king of friendly fire.

To the extent that this is true I'd argue it is because America engages in the lion's share of the fighting. Some degree of collateral damage, including friendly fire, is inevitable in war.

A significant degree of risk, confusion, and unceretainty are unavoidable in any military engagement, even with the best trained troops and well thought-out plans. With that said, one has to ask: why in the world would they use a grenade?

The thing that gets me about Angle, aside from the crazy, is that she does this Muslim bating on one hand and then tries to tear down the seperation of church and state with the other. The Seperation of Church and state is exactly the thing that prevents Sharia from ever taking hold in the US. So, if you are really concerned about the spread of Sharia, the last thing you'd want to do is to vote for Angle.

    As oppose to Harry Reid

Yes. As opposed to Reid. Your example makes him a Democratic/liberal partisan. It does not make him crazy. Sharon Angle once impounded the local highschool football team's new uniforms because "black is the devils color". That is crazy.

Unless you think Democrat/liberal = crazy. In which case, there really isn't any hope for a serious political discussion, is there?

I am not from the great state of Nevada and I pretty much consider myself a Libertarian, but if Sharon Angle has canadians like SmithisJapan this worked up I think I will contribute some money to her campaign.

You know where this road ends? With Sharon Angle as a legislator. Now, I know you hate Reid and you want to wrest control of the legislature from the Dems, but are you really willing to put a crazy lady in power to do it? I get that people are angry; the American public has a lot to be angry about, and that the Dems have a lot to answer for. But why, when the Dems are so weak, do the Republicans/Tea Party supply us with such awful candidates? Candidates that say bizare things, candidates with incoherent or non-existant positions beyond unspecific boiler-plate rhetoric, empty populism, and scare-mongering, and anti-intellectualism. Surely we can do better than this. It's almost as if "real America" intends to cut off it's nose to spite it's face.

"doesn’t believe the Constitution requires the separation of church and state"

What was all that about "activist judges" re-interpreting the Constitution? Has the right wing gone off that one?

Angle is not a serious candidate, and those who defend her are not serious about governance. The terrifying fact that she is running neck-and-neck with Reid is testimony to just how awful a politician Reid is.
