Many years ago an old lady passed away in the apato next to mine - it was August and the smell was horrendous, so I called the police and they found her lying there with the TV on. This was in Shizuoka, as well. Coincidence?

If you do a restaurant review, one would expect at least a phone number. Would it have too bothersome to include the URLs of these wonderful airports? I can take 1.3 seconds and Google them but....

You are getting 100x the info of a traditional encyclopedia with 90 percent of the accuracy, a decent trade-off as long as everyone remembers it. Basically, it is a great place to begin a search for answers on a topic but certainly not the only or most authoritative.

Just to be clear, the new tower will NOT be a building - no offices or "mansions", huge difference to building an empty frame compared to the new tall buildings in Malaysia, Taiwan, Shanghai or Dubai.
Posted in: Tokyo Tower stood for a dream of the future, but that dream is gone. Tokyo Tower offers no more dreams, just as Japan has no more dreams.

Most Japanese are surprised to find out that most gaijin don't even know their own blood type. I only knew because I've donated blood (and it is was on my dog tags). This is pseudoscience based on anecdotal evidence and was used by Nazi and Japanese racists in the late 20's and early 30's to justify their actions and world views. This bunk became popular again here in the 70's when a journalist with no medical or scientific background wrote a book. But then we in the US have L. Ron Hubbard and his "religion", so we can't throw stones.
Posted in: Blood type is a good tool to understand different human behaviors. Most Japanese have some knowledge of each blood type and its trait so blood type often becomes a good conversation piece.

Sure, let's go back to a low protein diet and watch the next generation shrink 2 cm. Ultimately, people want to eat an interesting variety of foods and generally as cheap as possible. This push to change the ratio is malarkey and defies basic economics of global trade. As long as you can import it, why produce food locally if you don't have the land or the farmers available at cost effective rates? Actually, I'd like to be able to walk into the local supermarket and purchase basmati or Thai Jasmine rice in decent quantities. I think many Japanese would also prefer them with Indian curry or Thai curry. Most young people have over the once prevalent propaganda that their geographically isolated intestines can only digest Japanese rice.

Yes, against certain currencies - read the article. This was written with insights from Travelocity for a US dollar based audience and does not mention travel to Japan for obvious reasons.

I'll bet it was taken in Fuji-shi, Shizuoka-ken. I used see that view everyday. Since it rises from basically sea-level there it looms large over the city. Due to the abundant water from the mountains, a port for pulp and proximity to the Tokaido-sen and Tomei, there are many major paper mills there, hence the stink. I once saw a British documentary that used the town as an example of urban blight.

Most new restaurants/bars in Japan use sakura, ask someone who has recently opened one. Consider this - 7pm on a Thursday, you're with a friend in an entertainment area and you spy a new izakaya, glancing in the window, every chair is empty and the staff are wiping the counters for the 67th time. Or you walk up and see a few groups of people quaffing some cold beers and sampling some tasty sashimi, etc. Hard choice? In this case, it looks like it was overdone and the media found out but still McD's is getting some amazing and free PR from this, so they win as even more morons will stuff their pieholes with this crud.

kwatt - while we had indications that Japan was going to strike somewhere within a vague time frame, the US absolutely did not know it was to be Pearl Harbor in early December while diplomatic negotiations were still underway. Many people conveniently forget that Japan simultaneously attacked Hong Kong , British Malaya and the Philippines within days of the Pearl Harbor attack. HK surrendered by X-mas. Obviously, they had been planning all this for many months. Radar was fully developed by the Brits from preceding technologies in 1941, the US barely had any deployed systems. In fact, the US military was largely a joke in December, 1941.

Amtrak is OK and has decent coverage in some areas like the Northeast. I used to use it frequently b/n NYC and DC. However, on trips back to the US nowadays I need to get my family from LA to Chicago and then to Tampa and don't have an extra week necessary to take the train. Luckily, my brother flies for Southworst so I get free tix.

What an over-hyped piece of malarky. It is a monstrosity - orange color for safety? Yes, so many small aircraft buzzing in the skies over Tokyo. The biggest joke is that they have a sign there comparing it to the Eiffel Tower (which is 119 yrs old and yet more sophisticated looking somehow) saying how much better the steel is and blah, blah, blah. Inferiority complex, much? For perspective, the Empire State Bldg in NYC was finished in 1931 (at the height of the Depression) and is 102 stories, 381 meters...now that is an accomplishment.

Just like the Segway...if a Japanese company had done this, there would be no problem. As everyone has said, Streetview is even more useful here than in most other countries. Yes, if we can have our actual faces recorded by numerous cameras in public than the argument is gone.

Many years ago, my first vacation out of Japan was to the Land of Smiles. Whether wending my way through the crowded and fragrant streets of Bangkok or quaffing a (damn cheap)cold beer on the golden sands in Koh Samui, there was nary a sign of Christmas and Lo, all was good. Travel should be like that.

My next door neighbor works for Denstu and is never home. Leaves at 9:30-10AM and regularly comes home at 2-3AM, midnight would be a rare early day. He looks like a zombie and I've seen him smile about twice in 2 yrs. Somehow finds the time to kill 4-5 bottles of red per week...I bet his 2 kids know him so well.
