Actually, considering the penalty for multiple armed robberies, that is a craptacular amount of cash = FAIL. If this was India, not bad but here if you are very frugal, that might last a couple of months (unless he lives with his units).

I've been to a few of the Nobu places, the one in Tokyo is very close to my office and I've been for lunch a few times. The food is tasty, fresh & well-presented, extremely consistant, smooth service, fairly spacious. Though my local sushi place and my Japanese wife's cooking remove any desire to go more than a couple times of year. Expat gaijin who are intimidated by decent local sushi places might find comfort here and won't be put off by the prices.

Yes, in the US (and other countries) there are speed eating contests going back decades BUT do you know the names (and excretion schedule) of these people? Do they have agents and write books? Are they on the freaking TV day after day? This waste-of-oxygen is literally famous here, that is point.

tiredallthetime - if your condition is that chronic, long-lasting and life-affecting and yet defies diagnosis, perhaps you need a change of lifestyle/career/location or a very loooong vacation. Have you considered that it may be a mental condition that is the cause of this array of symptoms? Sorry but if I got to the stage of using my condition as a profile name a on a web forum, it may time for a drastic change. Best of luck.

Well, the next in line is an expert on 16th century canal barge traffic but guess he wasn't invited on this little outing.

Considering all the TV ads for it, hemmoroids seems to be quite a problem here, even discussed by HS girls on swings. Some may remember the ad with the challenge, "would you ride that bicycle?"...from the US.

Watching so many people get multiple pills and packets of powdered medicine really puts me off the local docs. Not to mention long waits in confined areas with other sick people. Been here 15 yrs and haven't gone to a clinic for except for a flu vaccine or annual check-up. I get the occasional cold/flu but just sleep it off or use over the counter stuff to mitigate the systems. The docs here get commission on what they sell and are not likely to let you walk away without a prescription.

She is disgusting. Gluttoney is a talent? Why eat good-tasting food if you scarf it down in minutes. Her success is a testament to the fact that a large segment of people here are so braindead that they find her antics "entertaining". Can't even mention the thought of all the people suffering with rising food prices and shortages and this outlandish behaviour is not only condoned but cheered. Just a matter of time until a youngster imitating her gets ill and then she'll fade away.

Do you guys live in Tokyo - I have to assume you do not. When I lived in inaka famiresu seemed were an option once in a while but here in Tokyo I haven't been in ages as there are so many better options in both food and atmosphere. I remember hitting a Denny's in Hawaii years ago for breakfast and thinking - wow, a full menu and real portions!

So instead of eating some veggies and going to bed earlier, these cretins are paying Y2,000 to have track marks and get IVs? Perhaps they should offer lobotomies, as well.

Ahh, I see what you're getting at and while it is logical, when you're dealing with "ink-stained wretches" to quote Peter the Great, you will have to go along with the program. Bureaucrats are concerned with following rules and covering thier behinds, they leave thier logic at home. Are you concerned they won't give it back? I have found the folks in Meguro and Setagaya to be fairly cool so far.
Moderator: Readers, stay on topic please. The subject is what happened to the two women in Shinjuku, not what happens at the ward office.

flyingfish - I'm white and I'm racially-profiled by just about every Japanese person I come in contact with. On a minor level, everyone tries to speak to me in retarded Engrish and on a major level I'm legally refused housing. If I couldn't handle it I'd go home. Particular to this incident, cops do profile based on situation, dress, attitude and looks, as it is basic police work.

Well, go ahead and carry your passport around as you barhop, etc. When I do this, I'm a tourist and generally not far from where I'm staying. Should they want the real document, they can accompany me to my hotel. The risk of getting in trouble with authorities is outweighed by my piece of mind of not losing a passport to pickpockets or just bad luck. This is fine for routine ID checks and has worked for me in Thailand, Bali, Korea and HK. If you've done something seriously wrong then you're just in a bit more trouble.
The ward office will obviously have the right to double-check your passport when you renew your gaijin card, as the gaijin card and your ability to carry it is based off the passport and the visa inside it and has the passport number displayed on it.

theperilouspea - are you OK? There are many examples of privately funded cable systems in the past - FLAG, to name one that I am personally familiar with. NTT Com is Japanese and they are partnering with a Russian firm, how will this afford you insight into American corporate philosophy?

When I'm vacationing abroad and going out and about, I'll take a color photocopy with me and leave my passport in the hotel safe/friend's house. The fake undercover cop who is actually a brazen identity thief may get some private info when you show him the paper but not your actual passport.

Agree with romulus3... Hmm, 11:30PM in Shinjuku, two gaijin gals...yes, they can ask for and you should just show your passports right away - why the drama? Now if they ask you to get in a car or accompany them down a darkened alley, then you may want to establish things more clearly.

I once worked at a place where the boss decreed that if you were late three times in a month, even by just a minute, they would deduct half-a-day's pay. It didn't take long before some chronically late staff realized that on the third time they might as well just take the morning off. In the end, they dropped the policy. I've always been an early bird so being late has never been an issue. Needless to say, I don't hang around in the evening just for show...
