    The saddest thing is that the Japanese Government turns a blind eye to people like this, and does nothing for them.

    Apparently "taxpayers" don't either.

    What makes JT so sure that the guy passing by is a businessman?

    Cuz that simplifies the pictures "message" of dichotomy by having an inherently wealthy "businessman" walking by a homeless person. Methinks Yuriko-chan spent some time there waiting for such a "businessman" to walk by to get the shot she wanted.

    Haven't business leaders in this nation learned yet ?

    No, it's a shame they don't read JT where they could learn so much from such well-informed and intelligent proposals as adding salads to the McDonald's menu.

    I pay taxes and pay for the upkeep. I certainly can't use that bench while someone sleeps on it.

    Poor thing - maybe you can suggest having separate benches for taxpayers only? Kick the tourists off them too?

    While I don't agree with all his points, he's essentially saying that the people of Japan have been poorly served by their government on this issue (and others), and that I'd tend to agree with.

    add the whales killed naturally every year through shipstrikes, beaching, pollution, nets, bycatch and global warming...estimated to be roughly 20-30 thousand per year.

    Then shouldn't those causes of whale death, which each of us contribute to and causes the death of a far greater number of whale and other animals, be getting more public pressure and outrage from SS, Australia, and the public in all countries? Rationally speaking, anyone truly concerned about whales and the ocean should be using their energy addressing the big killers like these, but they focus on whaling because;

    1) Posturing against "the Japanese" gives an easily identifiable enemy

    2) That works even better when the enemy is "foreign" and thus easier to demonize, especially in a country with an iffy history vis-a-vis racism against Asians.

    3) It's easier to demonize someone else for a graphic and visually-striking way of killing whales, rather than looking at how your own lifestyle has a far greater impact.

    which are the reasons why Rudd has taken this on, and why the public laps it up and supports groups like SS.

    For the record, I am an opponent of whaling (for the harm it does Japan), but I'm a bigger opponent of hypocrisy (note spelling).

    Whaling should be a morality issue, not a polital one.

    It is political for the reasons I mentioned, but it should be a legal issue, not a subjective "moral" one.

    I think they're talking about teachers, not foreigner ESL "teachers".

    Posted in: The number of people who want to be teachers is decreasing. Many use up so much of their energy dealing with unruly parents that they get sick, and quit.

    Special effects are a big part of the problem with remakes like The Day the Earth Stood Still. Too much emphasis on CGI and big explosions, less on characters and plot. The original "Day" was probably too cerebral for a modern audience.

    but all of them are always part of culturally China

    But not linguistically, how many of them speak "Chinese"? How may languages and cultures are there within "China"?

    China's supposed continuous thousands of years of history may be true, but it's the same as saying that Europe has had thousands of years of continuous culture - different languages and cultures within one bigger meta-culture with loosely similar values. Nothing really to brag about, except for those countries with an insuperiority complex.

    mushroomcloud;

    My take is that China will not want to jeopardize her economy, already the world's 3rd largest, with a shooting war against a neighbor at this time.

    If China's economy heads south and China sees even more unrest in the rural areas, more student grumblings, and more unemployment, you'll quickly see the CCP start to stir up nationalist sentiments again. It has staked its existence recently on economic growth, and if it can't deliver on that and faces unrest, it'll really quickly fall back on flag-waving and stirring up China's latent (but strong) xenophobic nationalism against Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, or even India and "the West". A war is more likely in the near term, not less.

    adm kenshin;

    Do you know how much successfully attaining a patent can cost? It is not something you do unless you're a multinational giant,

    Yep, I've been involved with a lot from beginning to end so I know the costs, and as I was not working at a "multinational giant" I can safely say that the costs are expensive, but not that bad. Many small firms and universities file patents, hardly giant corporations. I'd rather have them be more expensive than cheaper so that the various national offices or WIPO aren't flooded with more garbage filings from self-proclaimed inventors. If some brilliant technology or process is invented but someone can;t afford to patent it (not that likely), then they're a bad businessperson if they can't rustle up some VCs or license it to someone who can patent it.

    especially as a single invention can be covered by thousands of patents.

    That's just silly and if that does happens that is the exception, not the norm. An "invention" is an imprecise term, anyway, and patents are not filed on a product.

    Actually, it is most often done by small companies, so called patent trolls

    Good point - trolls do a lot, not sure about most.

    How come then that you are hard-pressed to find a patent that actually serves its purpose, i.e. distributing information about a technology?

    I don't even understand that question, sorry. Sounds more like an opinion than a fact.

    How come patent bureaus routinely approve applications that are already covered by prior art or another patent?

    They do? It does happen, but I'd hardly say it's endemic. I've had far more cases personally where a competitor's patent app is denied because it has been reading on mine, i.e. the opposite case to what you describe.

    The system is rotten, and there are now other systems which serve the same purpose, thus it is no longer required.

    Good luck with that. I've found that people who rail against the idea of patents are those who can;t operate within that environment, so rather than work within it they want to throw it away, and that ain't gonna happen, nor should it.
