Anyone know how to say "Milli Vanilli" Mandarin? And no, it's not Mirri Banirri - that's obviously Japanese.

The reason this is a story now is because Russia is upset that Japan refers to these islands as illegally occupied in textbooks. Before the usual suspects chime in with non-sequiturs about Takeshima or the Senkakus, I think the fact (as already mentioned) that the USSR invaded them 3 days AFTER Japan surrendered is pretty damning for the Russian side.

since JT can't see fit to link to the stories they get these quotes from.

Now, the US doesn't need to have bases in Japan, technically they weren't needed after the Occupation. The key issue is that the Japanese government wants them there, as they form one of the bases of Japan's defence policy. Given that Article 9 doesn't allow Japan to project military power outside its territory, I think it's good that the US military is there for that reason.
But the idea that the US bases are the only things keeping Japan free from invasion are laughable at best, offensive and condescending at worst.

Plus don't forget to check for anything terrible like an "illegal" mp3 file on your laptop/iPod, in case DHS confiscates it.

The new Defense Minister should be a hoot, since he "plays guitar and keyboards with his LDP colleagues in a band called Gi!nz."

Wottock-Hunt;
That's absolute rubbish! A show where everyone said "oishii"? That would NEVER appear on Japanese TV. Seriously.
Now if some had thought it was all "oishii" and the rest had said it was "umai", then I'd have believed you.

Westurn sure is doing a good job promoting the US as a place to eat out. $2 hotdogs from 7-11, nstant noodles from college campuses and cheap Bud - that's sure to draw in the wealthy expats.

Wasteful maybe, but before the casual condescension and self-righteous comments get too sickening, note that if you're from Australia, Canada, or the US you're probably using and wasting way more water than a Japanese person, so you might want to cut down on your own waste water and ship it off to those poor thirsty kids in Africa or wherever.
