    LoveUSA;

    Sanuki udon refers to the noodles themselves (chewy type), while tanuki udon is when you put bits of tempura batter on top, so its possible to have sanuki tanuki udon.

    realteacher may want to actually read the article from from quote was taken before criticizing others for knee jerk reactions and jingosim.

    The full article is actually pretty intriguing (for those who want to think), especially this part;

    The new mood of reconciliation is also evident in the novel ideas that have been floated recently to overcome the differences over wartime history that have long isolated Japan from the region.

    These include a recent report in the Yomiuri Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, based on unidentified diplomatic sources, of a Chinese initiative for reconciliation that would include a visit by Mr. Hatoyama to Nanjing to apologize for the 1937 massacre of Chinese civilians there by invading Japanese soldiers. President Hu would then visit Hiroshima to proclaim China’s peaceful intentions.

    If so, that would be big and would help Japan and China, once the nationalist nutbars on both sides vent their spleen.

    Posted in: Hatoyama does not have a clear sense of what relying on China would really mean, or whether it is even actually desirable.

    The total irrationality involved and lowering of Liberal I.Q levels to third grade level playground talk who can't even put a capitol letter to the ladies name.

    Personally I think all who continually polarize politics into left vs right/conservative vs liberal is acting at a third grade level, or worse.

    Glad that the Toyota recall happened because it is showing the ugly side of prejudice toward a foreign company in the States whether it is the media or people who dislike Toyota for various reasons.

    No need to look as far as the US - simply look at many of the preceding comments for ample evidence of this, with prejudice towards Japan in general thrown in for good measure.

    Branded;

    While I share your lament that there is too much knee-jerk criticism of the US (though you seem to have no problem with such criticism of Japan), you're way off in saying that only the US is willing to get in and do the dirty work. Canada has sent 2 naval vessels, 1800 ground troops (for relief efforts and security), plus strategic airlift.

    Isn't AC flying Airbuses on their Tokyo/Can routes?

    I think they use some A330s on the Vancouver route, but whenever I've flown from Toronto (direct or via Van) it's been a 777 or a 767.

    smithinjapan;

    it's simply amazing to watch the Japanese and the expats that think they are Japanese defend what this man did by claiming

    While I agree with you that such views are offensive, so is the borderline bigotry in this comment. Aren't you also amazed by those defending this man who are neither "Japanese" or "expats that think they are Japanese", whatever the heck that latter means. beyond being a strawman?

    I don't often read or comment on anything in the Crime section since most of it is put there for the enjoyment of the lowbrow. However I was curious as to why this particular piece had so many comments - had I known that many of them are essentially defending the man or placing partial blame on the victim, I wouldn't have bothered - that view is just sick.

    one more advice...just mention that you are an ENGLISH teacher and their tone will usually always change and start apologizing to you or become more polite.

    Self-respect would prevent me from ever uttering such a statement.

    The response has been excellent so far, both in monetary and material terms. The tendency of some here to engage in games on oneupsmanship over how much/little individual countries make, is appalling.

    Stange that the only time i've had such service i've been flying on Asian carriers.

    Air Canada has had this for several years now on their 777s to/from Narita.

    Went there a few days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it - not crowded and the hike to Kobotoke-Shiroyama was great for a daytrip, but the highlight was seeing the sun set right behind Fuji.

    A piece of advice for the tourism folks, wouldn`t it be better to have the English guide actually availble at Takaosan itself?

    Hyper-offendable Christians and hyper-offendable others should recall that whatever our beliefs or lack of them, good manners require that we focus on others rather than on ourselves and give them the benefit of the doubt when evaluating their motives for being nice.

    Very, very well put Mr. Grimm. As an atheist, I have no problem and take no offense when someone wishes me a Merry Christmas - I am neither so insecure nor bitter as to feel challenged by the Christ in Christmas. Partly this is because of Mr Grimm's sentiment above, but also because I look at Christmas as a cultural tradition, rather than a religious one. Christmas, like many other cultural traditions, has religious roots - technically the religious roots of Christmas are pagan, not Christian. For that reason and all the happy childhood memories, I actually get offended by those who push "Happy Holidays" and try to ban Christmas trees. These things are part of a shared cultural tradition and should be celebrated, and can easily be done without the religious aspects, as seen in Japan every year.

    That being said, I will gladly take offense once someone starts pushing their "Christmas is all about Christ!" nonsense on me.

    Ah the good old "what came before the Big Bang" question. Here's a tip for those asking about it - there's this thing I've heard about called "the internet". Amazing as it sounds, by accessing "the internet" you can find loads of resources to help you answer this or any other question. I'd suggest trying that, but just realized that doing so would require intellectual effort to actually try and understand some very weighty concepts, and that's probably too much to ask. Best stick to the current system of just throwing out rhetorical questions like "What came before the Big Bang?" and make no attempt at learning.

    I'd prefer Japan not conduct whaling for the damage it does to its reputation, and nothing more.

    These whales are a sustainable resource, not endangered or threatened. Taking them from Antarctic waters is not a problem, anyone or any country complaining about that fact had better only be eating local foods, and not anything imported or grown abroad. Australia's unilateral declaration of a sanctuary carries zero weight legally. Whales have been unnecessarily sentimentalized - they're animals just like any other. Why is killing a whale worse than killing a kangaroo, a sheep, or a cow?

    Yes, Japan should stop whaling, but not for the Greenpeace press release and nationalistic (verging on racist) reasons spouted here.
