    I would argue that the war in Afghanistan is a justifiable war, in contrast to Iraq. And the presence of ISAF does far more good than ill for the Afghans. But then again, I'm not an ideologue so it's irrelevant to me whether it's Bush's war or Obama's war. It's a war fought by many countries other than the US, with the ultimate goal of stabilizing a country that has had little stability for 30+ years, and having spoken to many returning soldiers and aid workers, it *is *worth fighting for.

    Japanese people are good at copying anything from abroad

    Given the comments on this topic (or just about any other on JT) I'd agree that the foreign community is years ahead of Japan when it comes to being unrelating complainers.

    Peer review is the practice of subjecting scientific papers to review by other scientists with relevant expertise before they can be published in professional journals. The idea is to weed out research with obvious flaws or weak arguments, but there is a clear danger that such a process will simply reinforce groupthink.

    Nonsensical crap written by a non-scientist and obviously someone who only disapproves of the scientific process when it gives him an answer he doesn't like. Groupthink would better apply to Tracinski and company, who appear to want to deny climate change because of ideology, not science.

    Regardless of whether or not there is any evidence of falsification, the peer review process works and the evidence FOR global warming is too big to be the work of a wicked cabal in England.

    Throw in the paranoid garbage about conspiracies and the mainstream media (doesn't Fox count?) and it's the same old bleating we've been hearing for years.

    Japan is the worst offender for light pollution of any developed nation.

    Source, please, beyond having pulled this one out of thin air or somewhere less savoury.

    How about a ban on religion instead?

    Such voodoo and belief in fairy tales will be humanity's undoing.

    Oh and if demographics and an aging population are seen by some as a block to Japan, the PRC has demographic crises, current and future, to make Japan's problems seem provincial - 32 million men who can never marry because there aren't enough women, an aging population and even less stomach for immigration than Japan (and a far more xenophobic population regardless), hundreds of millions of people earning less than $2 a day, etc. China is a collection of three very wealthy regions (Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong) surrounded by poverty, and when the inequalities of that give rise to violence, it won't be a pretty sight.

    Altria;

    But the jocks from the other fraternity will crash the party with cries of "Neeeeeeeerds!" and steal the beer, weed, and chicks. I hate when that happens.

    Yep, we've been flooded with Christmas tat here in Canada for a few weeks now, as we wisely get out Thanksgiving out of the way in October.

    Something like it will come about eventually, though maybe not in the form Hatoyama sees now. France and Germany got over their problems, the supposed hatred "all of Asia" feels for Japan that the JT brain trust love to froth about sure doesn't stop them from trading with each other. It is economic self-interest which will drive this, and I'd wager that most of Asia trusts Japan more than they do those kind souls heading up the People's Republic of China.

    Assimilation rarely happens with the first generation even in immigrant-friendly countries like Canada, it's usually the second-generation who are born in their new country who actually begin to assimilate, so maybe this would hold true in Japan. Sadly immigrants in Canada far too often move into neighborhoods full of their fellow ex-countrymen which end up as ethnic enclaves where people can't even speak English as they have no need to, Japan should avoid this too.

    Oh and if this push for migrants keeps out more of the eikaiwa rifraff, then I'm all for it.

    Nothing wrong with it, he's showing respect to his hosts and a cultural awareness. And very few other than Americans on the right will make much grist out of it - can't wait for Fox News' fair and balanced take on this.

    And I gotta wonder at all our resident Sherlocks who were convinced that he'd committed suicide or was being protected by the yakuza, etc.

    Anyway, always good to see a murderer caught, regardless of the ethnicity or nationality of the victim.

    flyingfish;

    i dont agree unagidon. most posters say both of them are at fault.

    Yes, I think so and I would put myself in that camp, but there are many who are sticking to their views based on nationality and gender, esp. those who seem to have some personal issues with Japanese women.
