The court should sentence him to live the rest of his life without a cell phone. For a 20-year old Japanese, I can't think of anything more extreme than that.

Will somebody who can reach this guy's ear please tell him to perform the duties to which he was elected, as mayor of Osaka, and just shut up otherwise?

Enraptured in his inflated ego, Hashimoto has mistaken Osaka voters' desperation for a city government that can get things done as their acceptance of him as Japan's messiah. Hopefully the public won't be forced to put up with these episodes of megalomania much longer.

Australia needs a law like Singapore. Perhaps it's time to erect gallows at Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Cairnes International Airports.

So that's their excuse for doing nothing at all? If they had some income at the very least they could contribute to the household expenses. Also when you go for a job interview you're likely to make a much better impression on the prospective employer to say you are working at present, even if the work is only part time. There's also a small chance that if you do well at your part-time job, the company will offer improved terms to retain you, and possibly even offer training. The son of a friend of mine had a part-time job with KFC in Japan while in high school, and he stuck with it through university graduation. By that time he had accumulated so much knowledge about how the franchises are operated they offered him a permanent position. Although he had obtained a degree in engineering he chose to stick with fried chicken and is now a junior executive with the company.

If I were an Iraqi I would be awfully nostalgic for the days of peace and stability under the enlightened leadership of his excellency president Saddam Hussein.

Nice try@Bluescript but hyperbole as a form of humor doesn't work too well in here.

Nothing to do with their going abroad -- they were just behaving in character. On a visit to one of the most sacred temples in China a couple of years ago, I was amused to see people munching on fruit as they walked, nonchalantly discarding the skins and pits on the ground. Why bother to use a lesetong (rubbish can) when you've got the whole earth to litter?

Mr. Hashimoto, Osaka's voters elected you to administer their city, not pick at scabs over things that happened several decades before you were born. If you are tired of working in government and want to go back to being a dempa geisha (clown for the media) then announce your resignation and let someone better qualified and more motivated take over.

Tsk, tsk, tsk --- that's taking affluence too far. He should have smashed it himself instead of paying to have it done.

What is it with Japanese politicians, that whenever a reporter sticks a microphone in their face they feel obliged to blurt out something that can only be described as callously stupid? If Hashimoto had any smarts at all, his brain would have told his mouth to disengage -- while he put his brain to work for a few seconds -- and then he could have mouthed some non-controversial platitude about how wonderful it is that Japan has enjoyed nearly 68 years of peace, and it's the duty of today's politicians to ensure this continues, etc., etc. Instead, he just proved he's as simple-minded and clueless as his peers.

Isn't "The View" the show where one of the participants argued that the earth was flat? Well, that's what the media's finally come to -- you have to provide equal time for the goofballs and nut cases.

I guess Pinoys feel the Marcos family didn't steal enough, and want to give them another opportunity. And Imelda wants to boost the figures of her entry in the Guinness Book as owner of more pairs of shoes than anyone else on the planet (or in the galaxy).

While they are not "cars" per se -- and therefore my post may risk deletion for digressing -- Harley-Davidson motorcycles are exhibited at the Tokyo Motor Show and the display invariably attracts lots of visitors. It would seem that by flaunting its "American" image, H-D does very well here, with both used and new models enjoying high demand. I fully realize Harleys are not cars but some of the debate here seems to be dealing with issues of overall appeal to Japanese consumers and fairness in two-way trade, and Harley seems to be doing a good job of overcoming these barriers. I feel this is at least worth mentioning.

It would seem that "foreign multinationals" referred to by Morinaga is a reference to the Japan branches of foreign securities firms and other financial institutions (gaishi-kei kigyo), which employ both foreigners and Japanese nationals.

Japanese authorities are utterly gutless when it comes to dealing with graffiti. Shibuya is bad enough, but out here in Meguro, practically every other commercial building's shutter is covered with scrawls. I'm in favor of giving taggers 50 stinging lashes across their bare buttocks, followed by amputation of the hand they use for writing.

It's a tough choice. Do you devalue the yen so that exporters thrive? And return to the days when consumers paid through the nose for their basic essentials? If prices go up too much, consumer demand will stop dead in its tracks and Japan will be back to the troubles that have plagued it since collapse of the bubble economy around 1992. And tacking on the higher consumption tax might be catastrophic.
