Actually@Dennis, displays of Nazi regalia in both Japan and South Korea have been occasionally protested by the Simon Wiesenthal Center. There was even a club in Pusan I believe it was named "Hitler." Might still be there for all I know.

This is vigilantism, pure and simple, and taken to its logical extreme, eventually we'll have individuals going around bombarding businesses with every minor thing that annoys them. If she didn't like the flag, the student should have contacted the Korean embassy and requested it to intervene.

Blame it on overpopulation. Do you know Nigeria has 170 million people? It is the world's second-largest country with English as its official language, after the US. And Boko Haram's efforts notwithstanding, its population will almost certainly overtake the US in the 2nd half of this century.

The police refused to rein in the Zaitokukai, who were driving business out of the area with their bullyboy tactics. So the cops are responsible for that mini-riot occurring in the first place -- but of course they knew that would eventually occur. Instead of invoking the relevant laws, social order is controlled in Japan by means of police fiat. It's a typical example of how the "master puppeteer" manipulates things behind the scenes in order to achieve its ends.

Most of PNG is a stone-age culture, so I don't know if "poverty-stricken" is appropriate to describe it.

I did not see anything in the article that touched on the subject of manufacturing cost. True, research expenditures were involved, but once something is mass-produced, it's likely to be rather inexpensive in the long run.

It would seem that Turkey can't leave well enough alone. Not content to be one of the few Muslim-majority countries where people aren't stabbing, slashing, shooting and blowing up each other in large numbers, it's determined to join the fray.

I've always suspected that the businesses that charge for waste pickup collect your money and then just turn around and dump stuff illegally. It's not the dumping per se, but the fraud involved, that would make it a more serious crime.

Try telling that to Toyoko Inn, which, if it loses in court, will also have to pay the legal fees. (And NHK's lawsuit is a matter of public record, I read it in the Yomiuri.)

That's a long way to go for such a spartan meal! A store at the nearby Memanbetsu Airport sells all kinds of cute Abashiri Prison omiyage with prison motifs, like towels, T-shirts, ash trays, etc.
