If this is not the law, then please show me a dance club that allows dancing after 11 pm and has been open for many years. There is a reason they all get closed, and I think this is it.

Fuddy duddies do rule Japan you know.

This is one aspect to Japan I definitely do not like. And I never dance because I can't! All music and dancing hating Taliban types should get up and move to Afghanistan! Seriously!

Or how about when you see a bunch of motorcycles, cars, or bicycles parked outside an izakaya where inside clearly everyone is drinking you go in and ask for keys?

I can just see the whole nation going to hell in a handbasket because the cops are going around to collect people's keys!

Oh well, at least they might be too busy to enforce the "no drinking and dancing at the same time ordinances" no doubt invented by reactionaries with similar ideas to hassling pub customers..

So long as it's a celebrity, drugs are okay.

No. So long as you don't bother anybody else, drugs are okay. I don't remember anyone who mattered upset about any of the above doing drugs, except the police.

I honestly don't understand why it is so difficult for some people in this world to simply MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS!

This article sure is taking a beating. I shall attempt to explain the logic:

    1) You would have to be stupid to believe there are two side by side identical sets of islands, one called Diaoyu, and the other the Senkakus.

    2) Nationalists, the ones causing the trouble, ARE stupid.

    3) The stupid nationalists rarely double check their facts, and certainly don't usually go to remote islands to see if a map is correct.

    4) Widely publish the incorrect maps and enjoy the silence!

It is used in ways that are unfortunately not easily describable on a message board to someone not already deeply familiar with the language.

Well Lowly, that is a black mark against kanji already! I should think that at least some benefits would be easy to describe. Definitely the disadvantages are! As soon as everyone pretty much can't write by hand any more, what happens when the power goes out? And the many extra hurdles of kanji will definitely hinder those who wish to learn the language as a foreign language, preventing the language from becoming a world language. And it can also hinder trade in its many forms. Remember, Japan's time as world economy number two was rather brief, and collapsed and will continue to collapse for the many things making this country insular, including this archaic writing system.

In the case of jpns, as others said, there are simply too many homonyms to distinguish by different kanji/ kana/ roman letter spellings.

Amazing that you draw this conclusion after pointing out how homonyms are differentiated in English. The word bear has many meanings, like an animal, to carry, or to endure. The word bare has many meanings, like exposed, naked, or to make visible. And both have more meanings besides. English has been adapted to account for this and so can Japanese. In fact, Japanese has already been adapted for speaking the homonyms! All they need now is adaptation for writing! Its not so hard! If I made a list of animals, and wrote the word bare, you would know what I meant!

If Korea could swap kanji for Hangul, surely the Japanese can eliminate those esoteric, antiquated, clumsy kanji as well. I swear, to love kanji you have to be some kind of masochist!

The combination of one 16 year old girl and hoardes of men under 30 certainly is destructive!

The moral of the story is that a more even male to female ratio is strictly required!

OK, so the Israelis have quieted down a bit the Iranians have to stir the pot a bit

My God man, but why would you think either side ever quieted down, or that this idiot speaks for all Iranians? Because your media masters made it appear so?

Wake up! The extremists on both sides never shut up and the moderates on both sides wish to hell they would! And the media just loves conflict and controversy to death and could give a damn about the ignorance, foolishness and war they unleash.

@ Chuck... Or Pak, point of correction, it's Takeshima not Dokdo. Get the name correct at least.

Yeah, and its Nihon or Nippon, not Japan! Its the United States or America, and not Les États-Unis!

Sorry but its Dokdo in Korean, and the Senkakus are Diaoyu in Chinese. Welcome to the big bad world of differing languages and viewpoints! My suggestion is tolerance for them instead of stubbornly insisting there can be only one.

We all know that if there was some sort of Chinese military action against Japan that it would probably be the US military who responded.

The Japanese have a fine navy and SDF and they would also be there responding to any military action against Japan. There is zero irony here, although I do sense a LOT of ego.

While many Muslim countries saw mostly peaceful protests on Friday,

I am so glad the press chooses NOT to emphasize this point. How very helpful. NOT!

And try to keep in mind that this Railways Minister has gone rogue and does not officially represent anyone with this and certainly not the government of Pakistan.

How many were flown in, and paid to attend, with cash and free lunches?

And they were not protesting China, as the headline tries to mislead us. They were protesting the Chinese government.

But they should have protested Shintaro Ishihara, because without that buffoon, this would not be such an issue right now.

“We will never give in to China’s military threat!”

Or is it a fishing boat threat? You remember the 1000 fishing boats that didn't show right? I guess it was just a threat after all!

The plan also urges educational institutions, such as schools and universities, to discourage acceptance of underage drinking and help prevent drunken driving.

Another fine example of insanity at work! Hardly anyone in Japan under 20 has a driving license! Many might have scooters, but the overwhelming majority will walk or use the train to get home. Even on a bicycle, the one they are most likely to kill is themselves!

The politicians are just using the public's emotionalism against them, and acquiring votes by grossly over-reacting to what is a mole hill compared to other issues. The roads would be a lot safer if the government paid more care to traffic signals, crosswalks, and as I mentioned before, guardrails. But those things don't stir emotions. They just save lives.

The article leads with the arrest of two men, but no explanation what exactly they were arrested for. Grrrrr...

The new penalties are part of a long-term plan to eradicate the practise of driving under the influence of alcohol in the prefecture,

Did you say eradicate? Are they going to eradicate DUI like they eradicated murder and theft? Is somebody dreaming?

My understanding is that DUI related accidents are something like 5 percent in Japan now. And that is related, not necessarily alcohol being the cause of the accident. Would it not be smarter to move on and be concerned with the other 95 percent of accidents? Going all inquisition like on a guy who had one beer an hour ago is not saving lives. Its just mindless reactionary feel-good silliness. A natural extension of the over-reaction to that one accident on the bridge where the kids drown. Yeah, they drown. They were not squashed by a drunk driver. They drown. It was a freak accident. If there was no bridge, there would have been no deaths. Crikey, if there had been a better guardrail there would have been no deaths!

And what is there answer? Arrest bar owners for not stopping drunk drivers! And if the bar owners started handcuffing people to the bar? Arrest them for false imprisonment! This is whack-job thinking of people who seem to have never set foot in the real world and ever had to come up with a practical solution or identify a real pressing problem. People who hold people responsible for their brother's actions have pretty much lost it.

2 disjointed sentences as far as I can tell.

But why do we have to hear so much from these minority of nationalists anyway?

Posted in: Some of the get-tough-on-China talk merely caters to Japan’s small and vocal group of nationalists. But such security issues have also become more important to common people as well.

Why ask a question in the headline if you are not going to answer it? Or at least clearly state that you don't know?

Is the idea to frustrate your readers?

I read all that and I still have no idea why there are no 7-11s in Shikoku.

The article could have just been titled "The mystery of no 7-11s in Shikoku" or something and be far less misleading.
