Room at the Grand Hyatt about JPY 30k a night. Cost of top ryokan per person per night = JPY 40k. So unless you travel everywhere alone, I suggest that your analysis is a little off.

I could be wrong, but I often get the inmpression that the locals actually LIKE wearing the masks and stuff. Certainly a number of my J-friends agree that it seems ridiculous/pointless as protection against illness/allergy or whatever. Add in googles/hats/sprays and our hypochondriac host bation will go into overdrive on this.

Many people have mixed origins and proceed thru life with no problems. Interracial complicates slightly. And in Japan any non-pure Japanese (and that includes us "gaijins in a bubble") are anyway seen as inferior (for the life of me I don't know why - not like the locals are that special or lead a fab life).

this train is obviously "the place policemen patrol". Need tobe careful or JR passenger num bers will drop as all the criminally inclined gaijin take fright! they will resort to stealing bicycles to get around.
