One reason is that no matter what plan is enforced, or even if nothing happens and the status quo remains, it doesn't fix the underlining problem of controlling medical costs so folks can actually afford to go to a hospital in the first place. Much like you wrote, whenever someone else is paying 70% of the bill - everything is great, so you don't feel any pain (till some tax is increased to pay for the deficit).
