I think questions should arise as to why Garrido only served 11 years for a 50-year sentence. Dugard's kidnapping could have been prevented entirely.

Just read a Daily Mail article stating that when Garrido kidnapped Dugard, he had recently been released after serving 11 years of a 50-year sentence for kidnapping and rape. This whole thing could have been prevented if some idiot (or group of idiots) hadn't let him out early.

    11? Out of 50? I can't decide whether that's insanity or stupidity.

    adaydream:

I've been thinking about the feelings that the step-dad must have after all these years he has been considered, whispered behind his back, that he was the kidnapper.

Agreed. Police rarely know how to investigate these types of incidents properly, unfortunately.

Now, the USA being my native country, and having driven on many a remote New England road in the light of day, I can easily understand how, in pitch dark, someone could become disoriented, driving at a breakneck speed of 20 miles per hour, take a wrong turn on a road that has a bridge with no guard rail and one that juts out obliquely from the main road, and end up in the water.

Okay, I'll grant you that. One doesn't have to be drunk to end up in the water in those conditions. Of course, we're talking about Teddy Kennedy here, so it's not unreasonable to question his sobriety. Also, it does not excuse his swimming ashore, swimming another 500' across the channel, walking back to his hotel and getting a more or less sound night's sleep without ever calling the police.

Not unless it can be shown that divers could have been dispatched to the scene in sufficient time to have prevented Ms. Kopechne from drowning.

The diver himself said he could have prevented her drowning had he been called when the accident happened.

Besides, what kind of defense of Kennedy is THAT?!? It was his responsibility to call the police when he first came ashore. Period. Trying to justify Kennedy's post-accident actions by claiming the diver couldn't have been dispatched in time to save her is utterly ridiculous. And a bit sick, frankly.

Loony right-wingers ignore the basic facts of how Mary Jo came to leave the party with Ted. Most reasonable people think that if you're planning to have a tryst, the last thing you do is leave a party together with a bunch of folks witnessing your departure.

And most resonable people would think that someone who: drives drunk into the water, leaves someone in the car, swims to shore, gets a few hours sleep, and never calls the police - would be charged with more than leaving the scene of an accident. But then most reasonable people aren't Kennedys.

Didn't Mary Jo Kopechne leave her purse and hotel key at the party? You're old enough to remember those days, aren't you? Back when presidents and senators had trysts and the media (not to mention family friends) turned a blind eye?

    Tiresias:

Garrido had a wife living with him while his victims lived in sheds in the back yard. What role did she have in this horror?

Apparently, she kept Dugard on the property while Garrido was imprisoned in 1993, among other things.

    presto345:

What I can't understand is that a psycho and sex offender with a rap sheet a mile long never was under closer scrutiny.

Because the system is overworked and likely underfunded.

    Madverts:

    What sort of religious literature?

    Tony Alamo's? Just a guess.

I suspect Garrido will - finally - not live a free day for the rest of his life. It's about time.

You know white hawk. I used to respect you, right up until Sen. Kennedy's death. I thought we disagreed but that you were a person of honor. I'll adjust my opinion downward.

Weeelllll, you could try proving me wrong. Or, failing that, admitting I'm right. That would be respectful.

Look, I have sympathy for his family. They've lost both Eunice and Ted, two people I'm sure they loved, within such a short time. It has to be rough on them. But does that mean that he deserves my respect? Sorry no, it's not an entitlement. As someone said earlier on this thread: And while yes I will admit that it's rather bad form to speak ill of the dead it is equally bad form to cannonize them when there are so many more deserving.

I'm not going to dance on his grave, but I'm not going to ignore that he was a fraud who abused political connections to get into power, remain there (including having state laws changed so a Republican governor couldn't pick his successor), and get away with destroying others. Does a person like that, who clearly didn't earn my respect while he was alive, suddenly deserve my respect just because he died? Not if it means I have to ignore that he was a fraud who never lived up to his stated ideals, and trivialize the death of a young woman.

    seijichuudo9sha:

I guess the way it works is now it is Senator Robery Byrd who has to pick up and carry the torch, lead the fight for civil rights and sticking up for minorities.

You think it's still 1963 here?

    taka313:

These men are not honoring this woman, they are making her a martyr,

We honor her more than Teddey Kennedy ever did. According to sejichuudo, Teddy liked to tell Chappaquiddick jokes. Oh yeah, that's really charming. Yeah, he "honored" her. A real class act there.

    Taka313:

The conservative republicans relish the fact that she's dead. If she wasn't, they wouldn't have their political prop.

Relish? That's libel, Taka. Or perhaps I should point out how the Left doesn't care about life, whether it's an unborn child or a young woman who was a hinderence to one of their dear leaders. And as I said on the thread announcing Kennedy's death: Not a political prop, but a humanity marker. If Sarah Palin, George W. Bush or Ronald Reagan had done that, there would be no forgiveness for them either. It happens to be that it was a hero of the Left who did that. Clearly, the Left can forgive someone when it suits their political agenda, while a Republican would have been driven out of politics by both sides. Why? Because right-wing conservatives have principles and morals, while Leftists have moral relativity and agenda-at-all-costs.

They have no ideas, no morals and are like a boil on the buttocks of America. Small in numbers, smaller in usefulness, but REALLY annoying.

Wow, such vitriol. What have we done to deserve this? I mean, besides reminding you of the FACTS of Kennedy's life. Reminding all of you trying to cannonize him for his stated ideals and goals that he never lived up to them? The inconvenient truth, as it were. Hey Taka, project much?

    RomeoRamenII:

Heh, I'll take hypocrisy for $200, Alex.

You'll do better with fraud for $1,000.

Environmentalism? Not in his sailing waters. Soak the rich? Not his family's tax-sheltered wealth. Go after Big Oil? Not the segment the Kennedy family was invested in. And the list goes on and on. Teddy Kennedy wasn't just a mere hypocrite, he was a fraud.

    Taka313:

But, the fact is, he plead guilty to every crime he was charged with.

A deal arranged by his father. Otherwise, he would've been charged with DUI, vehicular manslaughter, or obstruction of justice, just like the rest of us non-Kennedys.

Secondly, all of these trolls and twerps only care about Mary Jo Kopechne as a political prop.

So, someone who proves you wrong is a "troll" and a "twerp"? If you've cheated on your taxes and at least once belonged to a militant communist revolutionary group, you're qualified for a position in the Obama administration. Or at least in Pelosi's office.

    SuperLib:

But in the end he was given a gift, a choice. He was given the gift of a choice and chose to spend the rest of his life trying to help others. Based off of what I've read from people who knew him and other nations he ended up doing a lot of good with the second chance he unfairly got. Should he have been in prison? Probably. But he did a lot more good out of prison than he could have done in prison

And only Teddy Kennedy could have done that? Somehow, I doubt it.

If that is your idea of the far reaching out then you guys need to work on your diplomacy. No child left behind was not funded by the Bush admin. That little sucker was left high and dry.........Reaching out with a knife in your right hand while smiling....LOL

Going off topic, but you can prove that with respectable sources, right? That wasn't (yet) another case of Democrats wanting to increase funding by 15%, the Republicans only allowing a 12% increase, and the Democrats calling it a "funding cut", was it?

    Taka313:

What sad hateful creatures have gathered on this thread. I'll be saving this one for posterity, that is for sure.

What hate? Reminding he party faithful that the man wasn't a saint, wasn't a fighter, but rather a coward and a bully? Reminding all of you trying to cannonize him for his stated ideals and goals that he never lived up to them? Environmentalism? Not in his sailing waters. Soak the rich? Not his family's tax-sheltered wealth. Go after Big Oil? Not the segment the Kennedy family was invested in. And the list goes on and on. Teddy Kennedy wasn't just a mere hypocrite, he was a fraud. That's not hate, those are facts. Just because the party faithful hates those facts, just because they hate being reminded of those facts, does not make the facts into hate. Neither does his death. You want to save something for posterity? Save the truth, not a post-production rewrite.

And all this vitriol toward a man, who did what to deserve all this? PLEADED GUILTY TO THE CRIME HE WAS ACCUSED OF. Losers.

Really? I don't remember him pleading guilty to DUI, vehicular manslaughter, or obstruction of justice. That's what he was guilty of. No, he plead guilty to leaving the scene after causing injury, a deal his father worked out for him. Remember, he swam to shore, swam another 500' across the channel and went back to his hotel room to sleep it off. HE DIDN'T CALL THE POLICE.

He also slandered a man who didn't deserve it (Bork), and used his power as a weapon against anyone who dared get in his way. He abused the system to protect his power and exploited those he claimed to be "fighting for".

You want to hold him in high regard? Then you'll always lose.

Actually ramen, Sen. Kennedy's presence up into the end, along with his legacy of reaching across the table and passion for health care, will, in all likelihood, grease the skids for healthcare reform to pass. Only a fool would think Kennedy wasn't aware of that in his final months.

Well Taka, at least you can admit that Kennedy was a partisan political opportunist to his dying breath. That includes changing the state law about how his successor would be chosen. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if his memorial service is "Wellstoned".

Indeed, almost every bipartisan bill in the last seven years has had Kennedy's signature on it, from No Child Left Behind and the Medicare Prescription Drug Program, to pension reform and a collective bargaining bill for first responders passed by the Senate just last week.

That's more an example of Bush's reaching out to Kennedy than it is Kennedy's reaching out to Bush. But hey, the Left wants to believe it was Gorbachev who single-handedly ended the cold war while Reagan slept and ate jelly beans, so why not rewrite Kennedy's history too?

Who is more immoral, Sen. Kennedy for leaving her there or you, who couldn't care less about Mary Jo Kopechne, except to use her as a political prop?

Not a political prop, but a humanity marker. If Sarah Palin, George W. Bush or Ronald Reagan had done that, there would be no forgiveness for them either. All seems rather simple these days with video games and the rest, however, as a child I spent many hours playing with my ever-expanding Lego set. I particularly liked a semi-trailer that I was given one year, however, I was never really interested in the Lego men (which are a somewhat more recent invention).

I grew up with Legos too, but I had to build my own semi-trailer. It wasn't very big, just four pegs wide, but naturally I thought it was an exact replica of the BJ and the Bear Kenworth and trailer. :D

Good for him. I wish more candidates would do that here in the U.S.

I remember when Lamar Alexander campaigned for governor of Tennessee by walking around the entire state and meeting people person-to-person. He won, of course.

Once in office, though, the incumbents often seem to hide from the voting public.

But to call them "gangs" is just the equally bored media finding new words to draw attention to something so petty and small. These guys are not "gangs". They are "teams" or "clubs". They hang out, go to events at tracks, drive together at night, but they are not gangs out robbing or being huge menaces to society.

I think it's probably just a translation issue with the word "ぐみ".

I presume this is the Miata sold in the U.S.?

When the current version came out, they dropped "Miata" and just call it the MX-5. I had a '94, with the 1.8 engine, and it was a blast.

In the article, they refer to it as "lightweight". Is it still lightweight? It looks like it's going the 300ZX route, getting heavier and more posh.

Her parents clearly take their daughter for granted. They should consider themselves lucky. Not just to have a child, but that she's still alive. Here in Nashville, we just had a trial for the 1975 rape and murder of 9-year-old Marcia Trimble. Imagine going through that horror!

If the family doesn't want her, then find her a family that will appreciate her and cherish her. She deserves better than to be thrown out with the trash.

SmithinJapan, dya remember when Palin said she could see Russia from her front or back yard?

    smithinjapan:

I remember her being mocked for it, sure. I also remember her flubbing up the continent of Africa when she was defending herself as not having said Africa is a country.

    Sarge:

But Palin never said that. So she was beig mocked for something she never said. Liberals...

Indeed. I think it was Ronald Reagan who said that liberals aren't ignorant, it's just they know so much that isn't so. They prove it again with Sarah Palin, forming their opinion of her on things that aren't the least bit accurate. From my 12:33 post:

What kind of things? That Trig is her daughter's kid, or that she (Sarah) was a member of the Alaska Independence Movement, or that she spent $150,000 on clothes, or that she didn't know South Africa is a country, or that she said she could see Russia from her house, or that she hunted wolves from a helicopter, or that she was the State Coordinator for Pat Buchannan, or that she was named as a co-respondent in someone else’s divorce, or that she tried to fire her ex-brother-in-law state trooper, or that as Governor she cut funding for an unwed girls home, or that she tried to fire a librarian because the librarian wouldn’t ban some books, or that she attempted to have “Intelligent Design” taught in Alaskan schools...

So much for "enlightened" and "educated" and "intelligent" and "tolerant" liberals. What a myth!
