    Madverts:

"the GOP is trying to portray themselves as being concerned about the people" After the Katrina fiasco, even Karl Rove cloning himself 100 times wouldn't be enough to bullsh!t their way out of that one...

So the fact that they turned the first day of their convention into a fundraiser for the people of New Orleans and the aid agencies, raising millions of dollars, was just more "bullsh!t"?

    Whatever.

But there are worse things about Palin.

Oh boy, this can only end well.

She wants oil drilling in the protected northern Alaskan wilderness.

Do you know how small an area the site is, especially compared to the entire reserve? Or do you not care? I would think with all your opposition to America's "wars for oil", you would want the country to be more independent.

She does not want polar bears to be named an endangered species.

    Are they?

She does not believe that global warming is connected to human activity.

And some people do not believe it's connected to solar activity, or volcanic activity, but soley the fault of wealthy Capitalists and their SUVs. Funny how you never seem to question their judgment.

    She opposes abortion rights.

It's a nice balance to Obama's stance, which okays abortion even for babies that are already born.

    She opposes same sex marriage.

Same-sex marriage acomplishes what, exactly? Is this really a crucial issue for the federal government?

I never defended the performance of Nagin or Blanco, by the way, so you can take your straw man and beat him in front of a more interested crowd.

You don't defend them, but you consistently "forget" to include them in your blame game. If you don't name them, you don't blame them. Trying to say you don't defend them is a cop-out.

I do find it ironic that some on the religious right-wing were praying that rain would come and spoil the Democrats' last triumphant night in Denver.

    Was that directed at me?

Now it looks like Gustav will hit just when the Republicans kick off their party.

... which they turned into a fundraiser for the people of New Orleans and the private aid agencies. Contrast that with the democrats who partied on a scale of the Chinese Olympics ceremonies and worshipped their chosen one.

Okay, Palin has an underage pregnant daughter and a husband who's a drunk driver, and she herself seems to be a crooked politician.

Unless I'm mistaken, the age of consent in Alaska is 16.

1986 was 22 years ago, and her husband hasn't had another DUI conviction. (The requirements for getting a DUI conviction are quite low, and designed to be that way.) I suppose you're a saint who's never sinned?

You're not building your hopes on "Troopergate", are you? Please say you are, I really hope you are.

(I've had to post this on almost every Palin thread so far, because leftist after leftist can't resist a bit of ill-informed character assassination:)

On July 11, 2008, Palin dismissed Walter Monegan as Commissioner of Public Safety and instead offered him a position as executive director of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which he subsequently turned down. Monegan alleged shortly after his dismissal that it may have been partly due to his reluctance to fire an Alaska State Trooper, Mike Wooten, who had been involved in a divorce and child custody battle with Palin's sister, Molly McCann. In 2006, before Palin was governor, Wooten was briefly suspended for ten days for threatening to kill McCann's (and Palin's) father, tasering his 11-year-old stepson (at the stepson's request), and violating game laws. After a union protest, the suspension was reduced to five days. Palin asserted that her dismissal of Monegan was unrelated to the fact that he had not fired Wooten, and asserts that Monegan was instead dismissed for not adequately filling state trooper vacancies, and because he "did not turn out to be a team player on budgeting issues." Palin acknowledged that a member of her administration, Frank Bailey, did contact the Department of Public Safety regarding Wooten, but both Palin and Bailey say that happened without her knowledge and was unrelated to her dismissal of Monegan. Bailey was put on leave for two months for acting outside the scope of his authority as the Director of Boards and Commissions. Commissioner Monegan received no severance pay, though at the same time another dismissed Commissioner, Charles Kopp (who served only 11 days) received $10,000. In response to Palin's statement that she had nothing to hide, in August 2008 the Alaska Legislature hired Steve Branchflower to investigate Palin and her staff for possible abuse of power surrounding the dismissal, though lawmakers acknowledge that "Monegan and other commissioners serve at will, meaning they can be fired by Palin at any time." The investigation is being overseen by Democratic State Senator Hollis French, who says that the Palin administration has been cooperating and thus subpoenas are unnecessary. The Palin administration itself was the first to release an audiotape of Bailey making inquiries about the status of the Wooten investigation.

    And then there's this:

I have a funny feeling that McCain's Hilary Clinton substitute is going to dropout. It has only been a few days and already Palin is knee-deep in poo.

    "Knee-deep"? Really? In what, specifically?

You don't hear anything about Biden.

Actually, you don't hear anything about Biden's son, Hunter. After all of the Left's harping about McCain's lobbyists, Obama picks a VP nom whose son is a lobbyist. Oops.

As for Palin, she's done something with her time in office. She's made good on campaign promises by going after corruption in her state, started balancing the state's budget, and has even returned some of the taxes to Alaskan citizens. Obama, by contrast, has squandered his time in office, voting "present" (if at all), proposing yet more spending and no cuts, and running for another office (after saying he wouldn't). If I were hiring, I'd pick the fast learner who makes the most of her opportuinities over the slacker who makes promises but just runs up his expense account.

After the comments you have already made I think most of the readers here will assume you mean "since I looked it up" rather than "if I recall." Your recollection is exactly what is in question here. At least that is the nicest way to put it.

Which is moot, since you've yet to provide any evidence whatsoever to back up your impulsive and impetuous claim that Dole is miffed she didn't get picked for VP, or was even interested.

    yabits:

The evidence for Palin's support for the "bridge to nowhere" is abundant and in the public record.

I'm not debating her early support for the bridge (the planning and lobbying for which were already in the works long before she took office), but rather your Wiki-based claim as to why she dropped her support:

Governor Palin supported it before she finally reversed her position, ONLY because it would not be fully funded by federal taxpayers.

The footnoted sources for that line do not back up that Wiki claim, and neither have you.

40 million viewers will translate into even more than the 15 point post convention bounce that Bill Clinton got after the nomination.

And yet, it hasn't. In fact, Obama din't get any "bounce" at all through Wednesday. A couple of polls even had McCain's numbers increasing.

Even with that 15 point bounce, Clinton still needed Ross Perot to get in with 43% of the vote.

Would we also like the American public to forget that Gov. Palin is under investigation?

Well, you would obviously prefer the American public not know the rest of the story:

On July 11, 2008, Palin dismissed Walter Monegan as Commissioner of Public Safety and instead offered him a position as executive director of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which he subsequently turned down. I look forward to seeing the first lady VP if for no other reason to see these know-it-alls overreact yet again.

Like the hissy fits they threw over Clarence Thomas and Condi Rice. Man, just when you think you own an entire race, the Republicans come along and free them again.

    CavemanLawyer:

She has run a state with a total population less than the city of Columbus, Ohio for less than two years. If the old man dies in office, and its never been more likely, she will be the next President of the United States.

The Left was convinced that Cheney wasn't going to survive one term, much less two. I remember the same wishful thinking er, I mean predictions about Reagan.

    Everton2:

There is nothing inspiring about her except that she has had a army of children including one she knowingly had with down syndrome.

Why do the leftists have such a problem with that?

Knowingly bringing a down syndrome child in to the world considering all the challenges and discrimination it will encounter is patently selfish. That alone should be grounds not to vote for her

Oh, I see. Letting an imperfect child live to be loved and grow up in a caring and supportive family is selfish. Might as well kill the thing and throw the inconvenience out with the trash, eh? I thought you leftists were supposed to be compassionate liberal types.

    TheConservative:

USAFdude; Surely you jest sir? Obama cannot debate, that is why he turned down debates with McCain.

...and went on "vacation" in Hawaii, where he underwent an intensive 12-step rehab program to cure his teleprompter dependency issues.

    CavemanLawyer:

The Obama camp said they accepted but had some requests to the format and schedule. Sounds reasonable and fair enough.

Depends on the reuqests. I've heard that the McCain thought they were unreasonable. Knowing Obama's ego, that sounds more likely to me. Funny that he would have requests, after claiming he would meet our enemies unconditionally.

    TheConservative:

I agree with Sarge. I cant imagine patriotic servicemen flocking to vote for an appeaser ahead of a respected war hero.

As I said on another thread, niether can I. And I know a lot of military servicemen, both retired and active, several of which have seen action in Iraq. Not a single one is even considering Obama.

    presto345:

But benefiting who? Again, like in the past 8 years just the top 10%?

More of the middle class moved up under Bush's economic policies. The only people hurt by them were the lower end of the unskilled labor market, who were replaced by illegal alien labor. On the one hand, it kept the country moving, but on the other, we suffered an increase in violent crime, DUI deaths and child molestations, while paying the replaced labor not to work.

    TheConservative:

McCains aims are to continue our policy of winning the war on terror, and bringing freedom to people living in fear under despots.

And there's the difference the more myopic ones on the left fail to grasp. They think everything is Iraq, Iraq, Iraq. But the Iraq war is wrapping up. The combat troops will be out during the next president's term anyway, we already have the agreement with the Iraqi government. They will be able to handle things on their own now, just as Bush and Cheney planned (late, sure, but still). But the war on terror isn't over, and never will be. Whether it's a-holes like Islamic extremists, or a-holes like William Ayers or Timothy McVeigh, terrorism will continue. The effort to stop it before innoncents are killed is a difficult and noble fight, and I won't trust it to someone who is afraid of a certain cable news channel.

    GeorgeRoper:

Strewth, Do all Americans argue all the time?

Yes. Well, okay, just some of us. For me, I like having my knowledge and beliefs challenged, because in making my case, I not only express my opinion, but also how I came to it. That doesn't explain why some people keep repeating the same chants, myths, and talking points, however...

So what if Mr McCain picked someone hardly known. How many knew Obama until recently, not many, and i`d put a wager on that.

I was going to make that point later, well done.

    Nessie:

And I guess you've never heard of appeaser Ron Paul, who has been against intervention in Iraq and has had the most support among military servicepeople.

For someone who "won" a lot of polls, Paul never seemed to get many actual live votes. And I've yet to meet any active duty or retired military folks who liked him, either.

    CavemanLawyer:

Are you completely sure? I have no clue at this point in time how she got to be governor of the 3rd least populous state in the country. If it was her merits, could you please tell me what her merits are?

Maybe her campaign team had her opponent disqualified. Oh wait, that was Obama. Sorry.

    yabits:

Are these the same good folks who kept electing that crook Ted Stevens? Are they the same good folks who kept electing the corrupt Frank Murkowski?

    Speaking of desperation...

Palin beat Murkowski in the primary, then defeated the better-funded democrat opponent in the general. How? By promising to clean up the corruption (same tactic Jindal used in the 60-year democrat stronghold of Louisiana). And Stevens? Palin pressured him to come clean.

Who was for this so-called "bridge to nowhere?" Governor Palin supported it before she finally reversed her position, ONLY because it would not be fully funded by federal taxpayers. So oil-rich Alaska cuts a project only because they would have had to kick in their own money.

If you're going to quote Wikipedia articles, you might want to read the original sources referenced in the footnotes. None of them support your Wiki-based editorial.

One of those sources does, however, explain how Palin got elected:

She made three other promises: to end corruption in state government, cut spending, and provide accountability. She's now redeeming those promises.

    goodDonkey:

If you don't think that Elizabeth Dole is asking herself, "Why not me? What does she have that I do not?" then guess again.

You know Mrs. Dole personally, do you? I haven't heard the first thing about her being interested, and I doubt she would be after her husband's unsuccessful presidential bid.

She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.

And yet she still has more experience than Obama.

Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.

Well, that will make a nice contrast to Obama, who is so pro-abortion, he has even advocated killing children that have been born after surviving abortion porcedures.

She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000.

You mean anti-Gulf War I and II Pat Buchanan?

Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.

Some people think Karl Marx should be taught in public schools, and in fact do teach Marxism.

She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.

And some people don't think solar activity is the cause of climate change. If Palin has the environmental views you claim, then how do you explain this?

Yet it worked for the Republicans in 2000 didn't it?

Except that it was Bush who had executive experience as a governor.

As for the inquiry into her involvement in getting that Chief of Police fired, the man is her estranged brother-in-law who was in a heated custody battle with Palin's sister. Her family may have been trying to cut off his livelihood in an effort to undercut his custody bid. I doubt she will end up with anything more than a ethical black-eye, otherwise McCain wouldn't have picked her, but if he were to dish dirt on the family that would provide fodder for her opponents.

I gave the background into that earlier, you'll have to click the "Show All" option and look for another of my massive posts, where I answered jwillis79's attempt at character assasination.

    smithinjapan:

So... she's a staunch conservative... which makes her, what? aside from being a staunch conservative, of course. It makes her... unlikely to do anything progressive?

Since "progressive" means Marxist... GOOD! The fact that she's a staunch conservative means that she will bring back the staunch conservative vote that McCain lost and needs to win.

Also, the fact that she's a right-wing conservative means that she'll naturally have better judgement. As Peter Schweizer summarized in Do As I Say, Not As I Do - Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy, right-wing conservatives who do not adhere to their stated values suffer for their failings, while left-wing progressives who do not adhere to their stated values benefit from a better quality of life. Remember a guy named Spitzer? He suffered for his failings, but he was a liberal who didn't adhere to a right-wing conservative value he claimed to hold. (Man oh man, I'm gonna get flamed for that! Hahahaha!)

    JoeBigs:

I would rather vote for someone who has a VP who knows what he/she is suppose to do rather than someone whose VP does not even know what the job entails. LOL

But you would have no problem voting for Obama, who doesn't know how the Joint Chiefs of Staff operate?

    zurcronium:

since most service people in the US military now have the good sense to vote for obama to end the war in iraq,

You mean the war that is already wrapping up? The one where troop levels are below pre-surge levels and dropping every month? The one where we have an agreement with the Iraqi government to have combat troops out by 2011? That war in Iraq?

    JoeBigs:

That is a darn good one! Guam!!!LOL Hell Guam is has around 174000 people living in it and it is 209 sq miles. While Alaska has a population 683,478 and 656,424 sq mi! There are more people living in Guam per sq mile than there is in Alaska!LOL

    Your point being...?

Whie the only thing that Palin has on her record is a Bridge to no where that she wanted the US tax payers to pay 100%.

You've got your facts completely wrong. Palin didn't want the bridge.

Not good for Mc since he is not even a Fiscal Conservative.

Again, completely wrong. Or didn't you see the comparison in earmark spending between McCain and Obama? Obama: $740,000,000 in proposed earmark spending. McCain: $0.

    ExPrincesska:

I watched her speech on tv and she was sreaming in her shrill voice and pierced my ears and I chanegd the channel. She wanter to shatter the glass ceiling. Definitely shattered my windows.

Don't tell me you prefer Hillary's smooth, soothing delivery? ;-)

As a private pilot, maybe I can help the leftists here with comparing Palin's inexperience to Obama's. Let's say you're boarding a plane, and happen to glance in the cabin and see the pilots doing their pre-flights. Which scenario would make you more comfortable?

    1) Pilot (left-seat) is young an obviously inexperienced. Co-pilot (right-seat) is older and experienced.

    2) Pilot is older and experienced. Co-pilot is younger and inexperienced. Also, co-pilot has experience working in a control tower.
